GWR J12 Sleeper pt1

as I have mentioned before, eventually I want to be able to run every train which ran through Brent in a 24 hour period.   The most interesting of which ran in the early hours of the morning.     There is the TPO which I will eventually get round to building, and the sleeper services on to Penzance.   In 1947 there were 3 down services with a sleeper portion in the winter timetable, (I think there were more in the summer including an LMS sleeper.). In the winter 46 / spring 47 tim

Modified Hall pt7: Finished (Almost)

So with an envelope from Fox waiting for me as I got home from work yesterday, it was time to crack on and finish off the Modified Hall.   The first job was to prepare the plates, as ever its a very tedious job removing the fairing from the bottom of the plate. This is made a little more difficult by the fact that Fox's plates seem to be a little thinner than Modelmasters and hence more prone to deformation while cutting / filing. As ever I wish I could just buy the nameplate on its own for re

Comet GWR H26 12 wheel diner part5

After finally getting the baby to bed at half 11 last night there wasn't much time to work on the coach, with the corridor ends, roof detail and buffers now added. I did find the castings a little poor quality, lots of flash and requiring a lot of straightening on the corridor connection.   It looks like the coach body isn't quite sitting square on the chassis yet, so that is the next task planned. Then it's a choice of sorting the interior or cutting those gas tanks to size

GWR A30 Autocoach detailing

So with the D95 coaches rather stuck awaiting an order of some new 0.5mm drill bits, it was time to get started on the next project. Detailing an Airfix autocoach as a diagram A30, with the Dart Castings detailing kit.   The first step was to completely dismantle the donor coach, followed by preparation of the shell and chassis removing moulded detail This consisted of the removal of hand rails, door handles, lamp irons, end steps, underframe trusses and battery boxes. Unfortunately I was a

Gwr open c

Currently on my work bench is a wagon I have been after for some time, a Ratio kit for a GW Open C. I think I am right in saying this is a 30 year old kit, but the crispness in some of the mouldings is still rather good, all be it slightly let down in some of the finer components.   The solebars come moulded as part of the sides, I think this has the net result of making them significantly over width (while the body looks like it matches the drawings in Ackins et al).   I have chosen to m

More wagon kits

Last night I got on with the initial stages of the next batch of wagons, All of which are now waiting for   First up a a Coopercraft Loco Coal open, and a 4 plank open. Coopercraft open wagons are a bit of a pain, given that Coopercraft have moulded the floor much too high. As a result I have corrected it by removing all of the ribs on the underside of the floor, then glued it in the correct position to the sides / ends. The solbars were then modified to remove the 2mm additional length on

A Bird for Brent Pt7 - The bogie & a problem

Hopefully this is the penultimate blog before the Bird enters the paint shop, (so I really need to confirm its colour!)   The first job was a couple of minor repairs after cleaning and priming the model, a handrail had come unsoldered and somewhere along the line a lower step had broken off.  These were quickly soldered back into position before the real work could start.  This was followed by gluing the reverser cover into place (which should have been fitted the night before…)   Ther

Introduction

Following on from this thread, I have now started work on the research   Background: This project is still in the very early stages of research, having decided that I really like both the track plan, the architecture and most importantly the stock seen through the station I have decided that I will base my new project on this line. While at the moment I am planning to model Cheddar, if research on the line turns up a more suitable/interesting station or I find that Cheddar is too large to d

Pdk 47xx part 2

Making use of one of my few remaining Friday afternoons off work I have cracked on with the 47xx body.   It has now been fitted with all the remaining castings (epoxy) and etches (soldered except for the footplate steps under he smokebox which were too fiddly for me.)   The pipe along the right side of the boiler was formed from brass tube, I pinned the cab end onto some 1mm brass rod to hold the two together   This was followed by drilling holes for the handrails.   There are three t

Renunbering a DJM 14xx: 1470

Ever since it’s release I have wanted to get a DJM/ Hattons 1400 class, the only problem being that while Newton Abbot had a number of them allocated, they were not used on the Kingsbridge. (At least I have not seen any evidence of use on the branch). Further more there were no mainline turns en route to a different branch which would have taken one through Brent (other than a 1400 stationed further west en route to NA or Swindon for a works visit. This said, in the post war period there were a

Working on the backlog: DCC fitting / Detailing GWR

In the companion topic focusing on the construction of Brent, I recently touched upon the subject of the growing backlog of loco projects that is currently building up stored on one end of the fiddleyard. There are currently 8 locos in store on the layout, along with a couple of extras awaiting component orders (notably bodies for a 94xx and a 64xx which are awaiting High Level chassis, and the Finney and Mitchell kits for which the intended use is still tbc.)   Yesterday the focus was on r

A pair of small prairies

Operation of the Kingsbridge branch requires 2 small prairies for passenger duties, one based in Kingsbridge and the other arriving during the day to cover the busy period in which a train runs in each direction at the same time. There is also a need for a third small prairie to run with the second loco above on an Exeter Plymouth working based on a memory from gwr expert John Lewis of a double headed 4575 power.   The first loco was renumbered a while back to 4582, a frequent visitor to the

Finney 2220 build part2

A little more work this morning while waiting for the inlaws to drop Evie home.   After rereading the instructions with a clear head, I now have a better idea of the firebox construction (picking up on a paragraph I missed last night in my sleep deprived state.   So first up was the profiling of the corners of the firebox, using detail photos of the preserved loco as a guide. I think it needs a bit more material removed, but want the boiler before I file any more.   Once I had finished

Wills Saint

A while back I picked up a bargain part built Wills Saint from the second hand stand at a preserved railway, with the intention of rebuilding it as St Dunstan in post war livery (St Dunstan being the name of the junior school I went to as a child).   Upon stripping back the components, it was clear that some of the components were in a worse state than others (in particular the boiler which had a large cutout for an X04 motor and a lot of rivet detail missing on the top of the boiler.   Afte

High Level Chassis

Over the past week I have been building a High Level kit for a 58xx chassis to use with 5813. Given the number of very good threads detailing the construction of these on here, I wont go into detail. Just a couple of photos.   Construction broadly followed the instructions, the slight differences were adding the horn blocks to the sides using my Avonside jig before adding the spacers.   I have also removed the springs to enable the removal of all axles (ive yet to decide on how I will keep

Chassis Jigs (and that 43xx)

Having debated buying a jig for some time now, I have finally taken the plunge and bought an Ultralite version of Avonside's Chassis2 jig Which I think with a couple of modifications (such as adding my own Tufnol plate), should serve my needs well at a fraction of the full jig's cost.   As a quick test, I have taken my Mitchell 43xx chassis (purchased off ebay without wheels). Thankfully after setting the jig by the con rods, it sits perfectly (so I am hopeful that once I add the wheels this

58xx 5813 - Body detailing

In an attempt to distract myself, having reached saturation point revising for next weeks Strategic Cima exams, I have spent a bit of time working on 5813 today.   As discussed in my previous blog, I had completed work on the boiler adding the mainly trains detailing bits along with scratch building the missing lower boiler (probably the most noticeable modification)   After finding some suitable etched doors in my scrap box, I have decided to model on door open and the other closed. GWR Toad pt1

Going to need to model a couple of break vans for Cheddar, a topic on which I havent much research yet.   To start with I have an old Bachmann 20t model   The first thing to go were the moulded on hand rails, a pig of a job carefully carving with a new scalple then finishing off with a square ended blade. At the same time I removed the moulded on lamp irons, and the break shoes.   The planed work: New sprung W Irons (just need to confirm which type) New hand rails, still debating w

Post Scaleforum to do list...

Scaleforum has yielded another batch of new projects, though my other half taking our puppy on an emergency trip to the Vets while I was at the show limited the budget somewhat (and hence I havent quite been able to make a couple of purchases.)   The B Set project has gained a set of ABS battery boxes, but still requires new Vac gear and some of the Model Railway Developments square GWR buffers once they get some stock in.   Picked up a pair of GWR Collets (Bachmann break and Mainline) from

Dean d14 part 2

Construction has now started,   First up I removed all the main parts from the spur and removed the excessive amount of flash present on some parts. Once cleaned up the holes were drilled for all the fittings   I departed from the instructions and started with one side and end before adding the floor. This was then followed by the other end and finally the other side. Once complete I added the lookout on one side and a repair panel with no beading on the other (one side of the other loo

More kit built wagons

Having put the 2251 chassis to one side while I wait for new handrail knobs, and having once again failed to buy the required plywood for the baseboard, today I have been working on wagons.   Fitting bill Bedford springie bits, along with the parkside / Cambrian brake bits to a 13t sr mineral, a parkside lner 5 plank, 1 plank and van, a Bachmann po mineral and a Bachmann conflat.   The latter two wagons have received replacement underframes from Cambrian leftovers, but still need brake gea

More wagon modelling

A trip to the local model shop to pick up some more plasticweld has resulted in the purchase of even more wagon kits, coming home with a Cambrian LMS 1 plank, a Ratio iron mink and a Parkside LNER van.   The Iron Mink was the first to be put together, using up my final set of w-irons. To save time I flipped the floor upside down (so I don't have to carve off all the raised bits), I then filed off the inside of the w-irons, leaving the axleboxes and springs. (thankfully the Ratio w-irons are

Pannier Improvements - 7723 part 2

Moving on from my last post, I have now made a good start on 7723   All the moulded on details have now been removed, along with all logos and numbers. The original handrails were also removed with the intention of replacing with scale handrail knobs and finer wire   Starting with the cab, the roof has had the hatch removed carefully and been replaced with a small piece of 10 thou plasticard cut to size. I have removed the glazing from cab windows, (one popped out nicely the other had lots

Collett Goods 2220: Part 1

Following on from my thread here requesting details of the class, Its about time I described the work completed so far on my Collett Goods.   So far the majority of effort has been spent preparing the body shell, a quick overview: This model had already been fitted with sprung buffers, which were removed to be replaced in the new buffer beams. The pipe runs down the side were removed, unfortunately this took the rivets with it so these will be replaced later on. Removal of moulded hand

Goods Shed

Progress at last, Having been suitably inspired visiting Clutton last night, I have spent an hour this morning at the airport awaiting a flight up to Broughton on CAD working on a set of drawings of Cheddar's goods shed.   So far this is only based on photos from one book, (given that was the only one I had scanned photos of) As such there are a couple of areas that require further attention. the village side has two arches based on the end arches as the only photo I have of this side is in
