Coupling

No, wait.....not that kind!

Whilst waiting until I can start track laying, I have been having an experiment with couplings. As Ropley will essentially be end-to-end, there is no need for me to make allowances for stock negotiating sharp curves. The led to me wonder if there was scope for closing the gap between the new Farish Mk.1 coaches. I'll let the photos below do most of the talking but others may find the results of this tinkering useful?

Photo 1: This is the standard distance between the new Mk.1s. Better than the cavernous gap of old, but still not brilliant:

Photo 2: The coach on the right of the photo has been fitted with a shank Farish coupling (379-402) and the difference speaks for itself, but, will they make it round a corner without buffer lock and the inevitable disaster that follows?

Photo 3: Thanks to the close coupling system Farish put on, yes, they will! This is a bog standard Uni Track curve but I'm sure they will make it round a second radius Peco setrack curve too. 1st Radius might be pushing it though.

Photo 4: So what about coach to engine? I tried the 3MT first but because of the way the NEM pocket is fixed to the leading bogie a short coupler just won’t fit due to it being set back slightly, but when coupled to a coach with a short coupler the gap isn’t too bad:

Photo 5: The black five has no such issues and when coupled short to short closes the gap nicely and still negotiates the curves without buffer lock:

Photos 6 & 7: The 4MT is probably the tightest of all three when you have a short to short coupling and the buffers do touch on the curves, but there is no buffer lock as the close coupling system of the coach pushes them apart as they exit the curve. This means the gap between loco and coach is getting on for being almost scale-ish. There is a similar problem to the 3MT at the front, however the NEM pocket isn't set quite so far back so the short coulings just fit:

Photo 8: Running engine first with a short to short coupling the gap is slightly greater so there are no problems here at all:

So, hopefully Ropley will feature stock coupled at a more scale distance without the need to replace the bog standard Rapido. It’s still not the prettiest solution around but it does make coupling/uncoupling much easier!

Cheers all,

Tom.

massive improvement - I have the Black 5 so is especially useful...

Have you tried with the older mk1's at all?

I haven't, but I think you would need to make some modifcations to the old, Poole era coaches as they are not fitted with the NEM sockets that these couplings just push into.

Good set of photos Tom - highlights it very well.

You could always use DG's instead though? :P

I think that you can get short shank coupling for the old style ones.

Hi Tom,

Good to see someone else enjoying the new mk1s!

The close coupling is a real star feature - and it's better than on previous releases with this feature (Dapol Cargowaggons spring to mind) where the springs were so weak that the weight of the train caused the gap to expand.

The mk1s with one long and one short shank coupling will negotiate 1st rad curves btw, my test track is all 9 inch Setrack curves

Interesting! I think I'd be tempted to fit a knuckle coupler, at least for 'within' the rake (to mimic the prototype buck-eyes on Mk1s) as they're much finer in appearance. Have you considered trying something like that?

I have fitted the Dapol Knuckle couplers to my MK1 coaches. You need the same arrangement of long and short that has been used above with the Rapidos. My coaches will still go round 10" radius curves.

Hi James / Paul.

I'll have to check out the Dapol knuckle couplers, they sound like they will give a further improved appearance for between coach couplings. I was also looking at removing some material from the Rapido to see if they can be made a little less intrusive for coach to loco coupling.

Cheers all!
