  1. I had the pleasure of fitting DCC sound to this lovely Midland 2F 0-6-0 and tender from a Slaters kit. All the gubbins went into the tender, a MX696KS, a 5 x Gold Cap stay alive and two 2w 8ohm speakers. Link wires were passed through to the pick-ups and motor on the loco to take the benefit of as many pick-ups as you can. She runs nicely, will be much better for the drawbar fitted, but the test worked well. Chuff rate synchronized and coasting effect increased so that the active braking can be deployed as per the prototype. A sweet little runner, and a credit to its builder. More again soon Jinty
  2. Hi Tricky, It's a Zino MX696KS with a screw terminal adaptor board, absolutely dead easy to wire up. I will PM you an easy wiring diagram as the markings on both the decoder and the adaptor board are next to useless unless you understand Zimo!!! The other thing is that the orientation of the decoder in the adaptor board is crucial. I've done some that have not worked that have simply been installed the wrong way around, The easiest way to make sure that the decoder is fitted correctly is that the ebd of the decoder with the fewest pins is fitted to the adaptor board where the speaker wires go.   4. I use Johnsons clear to seal them once they are dry, I think it's called Johnsons floor wax with the milky new formula, but it still dries perfectly clear. Jinty

Hi Gismo, The CAP is a TOPS coding so certainly too modern for your use, which going by the Jinty I would imagine is late 50's and early 60's The Ex LMS brakevan in your picture has an Engineering number so obviously it had been seconded into the Engineering fleet during the TOPS period. Ex LMS 20t brakevans like that for your period would carry either a 'M' or a 'B' number, sometimes on a black panel.   11. A little video of the Ex LNWR M52 Driving trailer on its maiden voyage backwards and forwards across the tunnel turnout and all was well. The Jinty is a Dapol model, fitted with a Laurie Griffin Chimney and safety valves with the correct base, then some Jim McGowan cast brass push-pull gear, extra vacuum piping and Narrow Planet Smokebox number and shed plates. Also fitted with a Zimo MX644D sound decoder through two bass reflex speakers (One in each tank) and a lamp on the front buffer beam with a bi-coloured LED to show correctly in both forward and propelling modes. The M52 will have a similar lamp fitted so that it will be prototypical in showing white in forward and red in reverse on both the coach and the loco. A D1807 Period II Open Third will be built as an additional vehicle between the loco and driving trailer, as there was on the Greenfield branch. The M52 will be in Crimson Lake and the D1807 will be in Crimson and Cream. Here is the video: Jinty

Here is a Dapol/Lionheart 74xx Pannier tank loco that has just been through the works. 7444 is fitted with a MX644D sound decoder which is loaded with a GWR 2-cyl sound project with dynamic braking on F2 and light and heavy load settings. Coal shovelling (F6) brings on the firebox light as well. This loco has had a large Bass Reflex speaker grafted into the space at the front, and sounds rather well for it. a few bits and bobs have been added such as a spare lamp, small shovel, a bucket and some fire irons in strategic places. She is very soon off to her new owner at the other end of the Principality from me. More soon Jinty

Hi all, I've been plodding on with the Ex LNWR M52 Driving Trailer and after finding out a few interesting details from a very knowledgeable ex-member of RMWeb, I have continued on with the build after making a little adjustment to the sides!!! The sides were swapped around then a start was made on the underfloor. The vac cylinders on these coaches were both on the compartment side to facilitate the early auto gear that they used. When they were converted to vacuum operation, the vac cylinders remained on the same side, and the central running board was removed. I decided to use Sidelines cast brass vac cylinders and cranks, not because the whitemetal ones were poor, on the contrary, they were very good, I just prefer brass where I can. Markits brass buffers have been used as well as the vac and steam pipes in the kit and an additional one from Laurie Griffin. A couple of pictures (Off my phone, so not the best) Bogies next Jinty
  15. It is a fact of life that speech accounts for only 15% of communication, the rest is down to expression and body language. If Larry uses a cettain type of language in text format, the whole lot is missing 85% of its true meaning. And to add further predjudice, he's not in a position to defend himself or explain himself on here any more, so all the above is essentially just one side of the story. As both myself and Craig, who do actually know LG on a personal level, have already said, some Ying to balance the Yang!!! Jinty

In a support of Craig above, I too have regular face to face meetings with LG as he lives just a stones throw from me, and I too have had no cause for concern with him, polite, helpful, very skilled and a very dry wit. I've also had 'get togethers' at my home where Larry has attended with many other modelers, and certainly no friction has been noticed. In fact they've all gone very well indeed. Again, like Craig, a bit of Ying to balance the Yang!!!# Jinty

Well after a bit of a forced break, during which we were blessed with a Grandchild I have now turned my attention back to the Workbench Here is a little Minerva Peckett 0-4-0t locomotive that I was asked to try and get running better. It was jerking quite a bit, checked the obvious wheels and pick-ups first and gave them a clean with some IPA (India Pale Ale is really good for some things ). I then fitted a 17,000uF Capacitor in the already cramped cavity inside the model, then gave her a little test. At the end of the test I lift the model to see how much stay alive there actually is, about 4-5 seconds I think. Please excuse the sound level, it's a bit quiet on the video, sounded ok to the ear though!!! Jinty
  18. I would of posted this last evening, but RMWeb was in down time yet again!!! And another oil burner off the workbench. A Heljan class 128 DPU in Banger Blue. Just some 'in use' weathering as they didn't seem to get to the carriage wash quite as much as their cousins!!! Please excuse the less detailed photos it was very fading light. Jinty
  19. Yes I've had a Set100 since 2004, and in 2015 it went wrong, fixed for free by Lenz in Germany and upgraded free too!!! All I had to pay was postage. All this, 11 years after purchase, now that's what you call customer service!!! It went wrong again in December 2018, and as Lenz no longer have replacement boards for the LZV100, it looked terminal. I managed to come across another Set 100 system just after the New Year, and purchased it without hesitation. So I now have an LZV100 and two LH100's, coupled with a Roco Multimaus handset. I believe in Lenz to provide both reliability and an excellent customer service. Their system may not have any frills, or any modern gimmicks, but it is, I personally believe, just about the best, solid, reliable and durable system out there. So all that said, I will still be upgrading my system to the Set101 in due course (The LZV100 will become a back-up) and I will get my Touch Cab working too for some wireless operation.   21. Hi all, I may be making myself look very silly but I have a bit of a quandary going on at the moment. I'm looking to upgrade my Lenz system as I currently have the LZV100 and two LH100 hand throttles. I've been looking on the A&H Models website and have found the 20200 LZV200 Command Station for £323.00. Now I know the new Lenz 60101 Set 101 Start Set with the LH101 Throttle is now available as well, but what is the difference between the two systems please? I know you get the LH101 with the Set 101, but there is only circa £30 difference in price between the two, and the LZV200 doesn't come with a throttle. Either way I'll be powering with the TR150 transformer. Thanks in advance for any help and guidance Jinty
