Emily laid bare: A Stirling effort
jessy1692 replied to MikeTrice's topic in Modifying & Detailing RTR stock
Very clever idea Mike, some great work on here, looking forward to seeing the end result. keep up the good work James -
no probs Derek, at the end of the days its personal preference and id alway pick railmatch in bottles/aerosol to me the blue is bang on but i am slightly colourblind..., i spray over some cheap grey car primer picked up from autojumbles, hi cote i think its called and does the job well, usually i use grey bt sometimes red oxide to get a slighty different blue im currently working on a deltic in red oxide that will be blue soon.Yellow ends are then brushed with thin matt white usually humbrol and then thinned warning panel railmatch over the top building up the coats usually 4 is say. For the aerosol blue id build up maybe 4 layers over a few days off top of my head i recon i can get 2 large locos to a can, best thing to do is have a play and see what works best for you and id say rm web is the best place to pick up new and innovative tips and tricks. For stripping lima factory paint precision paints stripper is very good and if it all goes wrong a tub of modelstrip will bring the railmatch off fine for another attempt. Good luck with the paint jobs James ps humbrol satin spray varnish is very good too

Evening Derek, im by no means a professional modeller iv been using the rail match rattle cans on my models for years now and think they are great, i dnt have an airbrush so these do me fine. At first i had a little bother with the nozzles clogging but if blown through after spraying and keeping them clear i think good results can be created. One final thought is just be wary of the cans when nearly empty they can splutter blobs of paint through as the propellent depletes also make sure to shake them well and bring to room temp if stored in the cold, id reccomend to anyone but one day im sure ill treat myself and enter the world of air brushing! Hope this helps James

Morning all, our 14 went up in a puff of smoke last night, dead as a door nail now, anybody re motored theirs and if so what motor did you use? Smells like circuitry has gone too so will have to hard wire, any advice greatly received! Cheers James

Anybody got a couple of spare 12cylinder Venturas to turn 832 to 830 whilst we are at it? Failing that could we persuade someone to mock up a sound chip based on class 14 sounds?? unless some ones got decent class 29 recordings....

Bit of a diversion for me, a couple of Hydraulics have gone for a wander and ended up in Yorkshire in the early 70's Cheers James -
A few ongoing projects, mainly from 3d prints.

This week i have been mostly...
jessy1692 posted a blog entry in Jessy1692's modelling bits and pieces
Ive been meaning to keep up to date with what ive been up to since i finished the 13 all the way back in August and obviouly have failed to either get anything done or when i have put it on here so i thought id stick a few pics up of whats been going since. So during and after the class 13 bash id set to and started to rebuild the tunnel mouth for the Gas Works coal 009, the original was a bit poor and not up to what im capable of now so i stripped it all back and set to guessing measurements from the Harrogate Gas Works book for the wall heights. At least the book has a good pic of the tunnel mouth and also measurements & diagrams for the actual tunnel bore. I did a few sketches & doodles and then drew out what looked right in 4mm scale on an old school book i keep lying around (quite funny looking back at the half a**ed attempts at economics homework!) I cut out the paper template and checked for size, trimmed back the grass and all seemed to sit pretty well. Out came the plasticard & thin ply and built it up. All looked pretty good so after lots of checking with teh 009 stock for clearence out came the paint. After that i reballasted teh the track and built up the rocky out crop in polystyrene which was coverend in polyfiller or somesuch and weathered up with plenty of greens & black to make it look like damp exposed millstone grit sandstone that we have up here. THen it was just a case of sticking the tufts of grass down to blend in with the original scenery and putting. Lastly i decided to have a bash at tree making, i have a 'forest in a box' i got years ago so i streched out some woodlands scenincs green & some orange 'foiliage' and had a play about, pretty please with the results so the plan is to get some more trees sorted this year, im going for a late september look so plenty of colours for these leaves.... Iv also been fettling up another deltic with shawplan bits, progress is slow buts its coming on ok, name plates in stock already so its 9004 with dominoes i think, best check the books again just in case. Just need the ETH holder on teh front and a couple more bit from shawplan and its about ready for paint, if it ever warms up thats is... Finally iv also been tinkering with a warship over the past few months, it was bought very cheaply after what looks like a fall with one cab end all smashed in, i transpalted a cab off a mainline one but the Bachmann chassis must ahve taken a knock as well and is somewhat twisted and im guessing as a result of the fall the mazak chassis is failing. Much bodging has been done and the chassis is now re inforced with plasticard and the just about straight, the body isnt too far off and i think its come up pretty well as 866 Zebra, Iv always like the hydraulics so i got a western as an xmas present, a quick re number from 1073 to 1017 before the new year (i had a set of plates on an old Hornby model) and a set of shawplan grilles before a few coats of grime and much and im pretty pleased with the results, all its waiting for now is my 08 sound chip to be re blown by Legomanbiffo! Roll on payday, i fancy a Hymek........ Cheers for looking James -
No probs Andy, be nice to hear from you when you get the chip in see what what you think. All the best James

Hi Leopardml, of course, i should have elaborated further. I couldnt put my finger on it but to me it didnt sound convincing enough, dont get me wrong Biffo chips are excellent but for me the 08 didnt dound quite right. Iv youtubed other 08 chips and i think its quite a hard sound to capture and re produce with the low rumble when power is applied, the chip sounded good but to me not characteristic enough for an 08. I tried sugar cube speaker in the master and a bigger bass speaker in the slave, the sugar cube does give amazing results for its size. I think i saw a comment on you tube on the biffo chip saying the 08 recorded wasnt in good fettle so that could be it? Ill keep an eye out for future developments but in the mean time the chips off for a re blow into a western, cant wait! Hope this explains it a bit better, its probably just me!Have you any experience with an 08 chip? cheers james
-
Aah i knew id seen this somewhere! i did one myself earlier this year with Hornby ones, think it was about the same time as yours i did a blog about it and remember seeing yours somewhere on rm web. Have you thought about sound in it? i tried it with a biffo 08 chip and 2 speakers but it didnt sound right at all

Great work Neil, is that an RT Models class 13 conversion in the background i spy? cheers james
