  1. Hi Martin, that is correct, apologies for the potential confusion! The sleepers themselves are 95% the Templot .stl file sleepers in the default solid mode, the chairs scratch made and positioned using the .stl rail centrelines as a curve modifier, and the webbing was scratch made on a guess for what would be necessary. Cheers, Tom
  2. Hi Tom, Just to clarify for everyone that you are not using Templot 3D plug track. I think you have created your own 3D files to match a 2D Templot track plan? It's hard work trying to make sure folks don't get confused. Templot 3D plug track puts the webs at the end of the timbers, and has its own system of connector clips for modules (called "bricks" in Templot -- think Lego). As you say, it all gets lost under the ballast: cheers, Martin.
  3. Yeah, this is the first time in 2 years that I've been printing directly on the build plate so I hadn't paid much attention to the burn-in layers compared to the conventional layers, and even these will be buried in ballast. Webbing could be thinner too but I haven't had any breaks when pulling off the build plate and everything has stayed the correct orientation (the breaks in the image are where print #2's bottom was married to print #3's top with a flange gap fix, when print #3's switch blade pulled all the chairs up when adjusting it.) I'm printing in set modules rather than individual points to ensure everything lines up from the Templot model, and using some 0.6mm needle section to locate the prints together.
  4. Trying to do in 3m x 1m under bridge will be scenic break. Sidings will be flattened slightly, considering a squirty plastic printer, and templot. Will be shrunk, aiming for 4 coach platforms. Clerestory i did have diagram Somewhere, may craft cut. My parents both come ftom Cornwall, one near Helford river , one near lizard.. Storage sidings will be under a BR layout.
  5. @MJI Hi Martin, If starting in FDM, you might want to look at the topics on the Templot Club forum, such as: https://85a.uk/templot/club/index.php?threads/3d-printer-kingroon-kp3s-pro-s1.850/ The standard profiles supplied with most FDM printers may not give the best results for timbering bases. See the above link for suggested custom settings. cheers, Martin.
  6. For the last 11 years or so, I have been building my OO gauge layout, Jencaster and many of you on RMWeb have followed me, supported me and gave me so much advice. I didn't operate it much, and with bad knees, difficulty accessing some of the areas on the layout, and a damaged ceiling to contend with, I decided to have a re-think. This was a couple of years ago!! During the last 2 years or so, I contemplated what to do next and seriously thought about 3mm scale and was very tempted. I then came across a couple of P4 layouts which really interested me. I joined the Scalefour Society while meandering around the Warley Show in 2022, and after attending the Missenden Modelling Weekend in Mar 2023, and seeing the difference between the track and standards of modelling, I was convinced this was the right direction for me. The thought of building my own track however daunted me and trying to build to that level of accuracy was indeed something which needed time to think about before making the final decision. I came across an article in the Society's quarterly publication about a competition designed to encourage members, non-members and novices to build a P4 layout and join the club! There is a post already on RMWeb which goes into more detail about the rules etc, so I won't repeat the information here. The main stipulation was the scenic area cannot exceed 18.83 sq ft and the track plan has to have at least 3 operational turnouts. This could be the push I needed. The hunt was then on for a suitable track plan, and many LMS stations etc were looked at until I came across Oxenholme, on the Kendal to Windermere line. It's the right area for me as I love the North West, Lake District etc, and it would be LMS of course. Oxenholme seemed to tick all of the boxes. Formerly LNWR owned, it comprised of a station, goods yard, junction, 3 signal boxes, road over bridge, engine shed, turntable and coal/water staging area. Perfect I thought, until that is I started measuring on Google maps and realizing the whole area would need something along the lines of 40 feet in 4mm to do it justice. No amount of compromising would get me to shrink that down into 18.83 sq ft!!! I then started to compartmentalize the whole track plan and worked out that the turntable, engine shed, one signal box and coaling/water staging area would fit if I trimmed off the edges a little and tapered the scenic part of the baseboard. Oxenholme(ish) was born!!!! I played around with the various maps etc and researched as much as I could via Google and Facebook as well as discussing it on the Scalefour Forum before moving ahead fully. I also purchased a point kit from C&L as I wanted to make sure I could at least build simple track without getting into all kinds of muck n muddles. I downloaded Martin Wynne's excellent Templot track design software, and using the guides, help pages, Templot forum and You-Tube, I managed to get a track plan that followed the real plan relatively closely, and would work in the space constraints. Further posts will cover the build and hope you will join me as I progress along this journey. Ian PS. See you at Missenden in a couple of weeks if you are going!!!! I will be slinging paint, thinners and bow pens around in the Painting & Lining course with Mr Geoff Haynes. I hope he has as much patience with his students as he does skill in his chosen subject! OS Map Oxenholme Engine Shed - 2.5 inch to Mile - 1912.pdf
  7. Somewhat mundane for a workbench post but after a month of 3D modelling and lots of sliding individual chairs along the Templot 3D models, finally threading some rail through a printed model for my first 2fs layout. I also made a compact version of the Turnout Blades Planing Jig on the right, with finger pressure and locating pins instead of nut and bolt. It also has some different height fulcrums to do Vee angles too. Some black ink to show the chair detail. My 2K printer is outdated now but even my short-sighted eyes cannot see the layer lines. It took a few iterations to get the chair grip right but i am surprised none of them broke on the 30cm piece... still need to go looser for the next sections.
  8. Have you tried the Templot Club, forum? They tend to be very helpful, there.
  9. Is there anyone out there that could draw up a track design into Templot please? Im finalising a design and really want to see if it will fit in the space I have. Thanks in advance.
  10. I've had a 22w version for a few months and have cut sleepers for 7mm O-MF as designed in templot. The pictures show the quality I achieved. These were cut from 3mm plywood.
  11. Hi Tim, I will see about reuploading some of the photos from the past on my thread. I also found a couple more of my turntable under construction: Templot is a huge boon, yes. Although its capabilities are so far beyond mine. I have managed to insert the crosssings, shift timbers and extend the check rails so I am about to embark on building that section. Iain
  12. Thanks so much for alerting others and posting those, yes I had seen your thread Iain as it features prominently when googling steam and Camden :) It really confirmed Camden was the setting to model and pointed me to the Steam Illustrated article too. It's a real shame we have lost so many pics from the site so I really appreciate you taking those photos - and I think you're being a little modest - that's definitely a C&S 70ft table! It looks great! Building in CAD is easy, things can float in mid air and don't need to support loads! See how I go when I move into the world of hardware... My sporadic research has shown that Perth (Scotland!) looks to have had the same style of turntable, and I was able to understand pushbar mechanicals from seeing a couple of other photos...so I think I'll get there from a design perspective now. It's really just the vacuum platform and apparatus left to do. Though I'm not convinced about the handrail support girders on mine. They are as per the drawings, but the diagonal angle looks off compared to the photos I've got. And then there is the electricals to think about. I'm torn between a stepper motor or powering via a wheel driven from under the vac platform as per the original. And perhaps alignment via a threaded rod into the off road holes mirroring prototype again. I fly RC planes and the gubbins from an RC retract has all the electrical and mechanicals I'd need for the alignment and locking. Then either hall or magnets to get to within two mm of the road and have the locking pin take over. But I'd better finish this stage before moving onto the next one! Talking of which - I see you are tackling the crossings. That was perhaps an extreme way to introduce myself to Templot! Amazing program, I did at one point get the diamonds about right, but then broke them trying to sort out a point they lead to. I really have no idea what I'm doing with the program yet I only started meddling over Christmas when I realised I couldn't do the crossings in Peco track! I will watch you and learn :) Cheers, Tim 😃
  13. You might find it beneficial to post on the "Handbuilt track and Templot" group further down the page.
  14. Thank you! And I love the 3mm dreams! I think I mentioned somewhere my own dream is Hornsey station and depot, 1980, or trying to squeeze as much of it as I can into my loft - if I had a little bit more space I'd be tempted to print them in 3mm too... then i look at the railmaps and overhead photos i think it should be 2mm. Maybe that's how i ended up choosing tt, and modelling a deltic with no wheels 🤔 Whatever scale, it's great to hear other people take on these designs. As the number of designs out there increases, so do the possibilities... combined with the really interesting stuff happening with Templot, I think these are good times.
  15. Sadly when Long Wave goes I'll no longer be able to listen to Radio Bore in my car as don't have DAB. More importantly Test Match Special will disappear Caroline North for me from somewhere near Fraggle Rock. 199I think. My layout is all surveyed in metric as it was designed on Templot and CAD. Like LU it's zero point is not on the network it's in a cut out at one end. It's actually a screw rawlplugged into the floor to hold the end of my tape measure. I believe the OHLE gantries are all marked in kilometerage. Jamie
  16. As a hybrid solution; design your layout in Templot to N gauge 9mm track code 40 rail then build your turnouts and use British Finescale plain track. I bought some code 40 9mm roller gauges from C & L Finescale a while ago but on checking today they don't list any items under their 2mm section but it may be worth a phone call to see if they will be getting any more. They have also listed copper clad sleepers of the requisite size before too, if they don't stock them now the 2mm Association sell them and rail but not the N gauge gauges
  17. Grabbed an hour today so I fitted the detailing pack to the 56 and printed off the remaining Templot for the stabling point. I’ve also printed off the exit road which leads on to the Bootle branch towards ELJ, so I might model this as well. Paul
  18. Oh, I don't think I have actively blocked anything 😕 Thanks for your kind words I try to be as diligent as I can. All the updates should be available as they appear once you own the model. I also get the option to send an email alert to everyone who owns it, so they don't miss the update. Yes, once I have covered the body versions I will be working on the chassis and control boxes. This work will be carried out while I try and fit my ICE3 bogies and chassis... which obviously won't look right as they, but I will keep the parts fairly generic so they can be adapted to other projects. I'm my haul of 313 imagery I'm often surprised at the places they have turned up... mostly on route to works I guess. Next on my list are some carriages, so I have something for my class 55 to pull. I'm also looking at trying to print some templot track templates. Michael
  19. Just finished doing that, was quite tedious but felt the Templot chairs would be too delicate in 2mm with my it being my first time track assembling so made a handful of blockier chairs that will match my printer resolution. Rail centrelines were used as curve modifiers to slide the chairs along, one by one. The non destructive placement also means I can change a few things like the gap left for the rail to slide through and the heights of the parts relatively easily.
  20. @KeithHC Hi Keith, If you are intending to use the loose outer jaws in Templot plug track, that's not really recommended. The paint will tend to clog the tiny slots for the loose jaws and make fitting them difficult. Masking the slots would be tricky, although could be done with a set of scrap loose jaws kept for the purpose -- very tedious to insert and remove them all. cheers, Martin.
  21. In answer to a question raised on Templot forum. The baseboards came with some nice wooden dowels but I replaced with 3D printed. M6 bolts go through the Dowels. I printed some extra large wing nuts so I can quickly dismantle the boards without using a spanner...nuts and bolts just slot in.
  22. I did a quick templot print out and mockup and I like how it's looking - but I'm a bit wary about the extremely limited runaround - about 80' clearance, so about three wagons and a brake van, or one bogie coach. I would like to ensure that there is enough room to fit a locomotive between the toes of the turnout blades and baseboard edges - on the left so that I have room for a scenic break, and on the right so that I could runaround a train without a second FY. Without extending the layout, the only way around it I can see is to extend the runaround loop off-layout on the left?
  23. Hi Martin, Oh yes, I knew this, but that's OK... by 'tinkering' I meant importing the .stl files into Blender to edit them. I suspect I will use the Templot .stl as a template and modelling my sleepers and chairs by hand. I'm slightly ahead of myself as I haven't installed Templot yet, but I've been watching those Bexhill West videos while I finish modelling an EMU. From these videos, and the Templot outputs I have seen, I'm fairly/mostly confident I could model what I need from the 3D output. To be honest, the 2D output is so good, it might be have been enough to import that. This is reassuring! I did read on the Templot pages that ABS, and ABS with 15% SIraya Tech Tenacious, was performing very well... but, I had also read that someone was having problem with plugged chairs in 2mm and can't remember what materials they were using.
  24. Hi, At present Templot plug track chairs are for bullhead rail only. There is no way that flat-bottom rail will fit. Flat-bottom track may be possible in future, but not any time soon, sorry. Made with ordinary brittle resin that's true. But made with AnyCubic V2 water-washable ABS-Like resin they are amazingly strong, even in 3mm scale -- see these: cheers, Martin.
  25. You are correct, it wouldn't fit the Templot bullhead chairs. My meaning was, that by doing this, the sleepers would offer the rail more support that the really tiny chairs can alone. To extend that thought - the plugs, and sleepers, would need to be edited/coerced, or I would have to make my own. I am a complete novice it comes to track, but am quite comfortable working with stl files, so the idea a workflow that uses Templot to generate a template that I can work to in Blender is fairly appealing. If I understand correctly, TT120 track should sit between code 55 and code 60. Accommodating Code 55's extra foot might a moot point as I can't see a ready supplier for bare code 55 rail. Subsequently, I am now looking at Peco IL-1 code 60 rail... that is also flat bottom rail and will need some tinkering. (I have seen TIllig's rail, but it has a higher (2mm) profile, I think, and is more expensive.) I'm on a Templot forum now and I can see this is going to be a journey of discovery.
