Graham Farish annouces Prototype Deltic

DELTIC DP1.jpg

Bachmann Europe Plc today announced that it is to produce a N scale model of the Prototype Deltic locomotive (DP1) now preserved by the National Railway Museum.

The 3,300hp diesel Prototype Deltic was built in 1955, and was affectionately known as the “cat’s whiskers” and the “ice cream cart” due to its characteristic cream stripes, French blue livery, and prominent central headlamp.

It was the most powerful diesel locomotive in the world when it was built and its success rang the death knell for steam, which up until that time dominated Britain’s railways. Subsequent to the initial run English Electric supplied 22 production Deltic locomotives for the East Coast Main Line, heralding a new era for rail travel.

The Prototype locomotive was subsequently displayed at the Science Museum in London before transferring to the National Railway Museum. It is currently at Locomotion, Shildon.

The model (372-920) is currently in the tool room and will be released later this year.

Graham Farish Class 03 unveiled

Bachmann Europe Plc today announced that it is to produce a N scale model of the Class 03 diesel shunter. This follows on from the OO scale version announced last year.

230 locomotives were built by British Railways at Doncaster and Swindon from 1957 until 1962. They were allocated across all regions for pilot or shunting duties and were the second largest class of diesel shunters in service with British Railways. Withdrawal from British Railways service began in 1963 but they were still functioning in private industry service until 1993. Although all but one has now been withdrawn from active service (one remains with First Capital Connect as a depot shunter at Hornsey following reinstatement in 1998) over 50 have been preserved for use on heritage railways.

Three versions will be produced in BR green (371-060), BR green with wasp stripes (371-061) and BR blue (371-062).

New generation Graham Farish Mark 1 coaches to take to the rails

Bachmann Europe Plc today revealed that it is to upgrade four versions of the popular N scale Mark 1 coaches.

The range of inherited Mark 1 coaches have long been popular with N scale modellers since they were first introduced by the former Poole factory in 1981. A new set of tooling has now been produced which will allow for the first time the vehicles to include raised details, the previous models relying on intricate printing techniques on flat sided clear plastic shells to represent the detail.

Tooling has now been completed for the SO, SK, BSK and CK types. They will appear in BR crimson/cream, chocolate/cream, green, maroon and blue/grey. The new coach range will be available later this year.

Guest 30-something

New generation Graham Farish Mark 1 coaches to take to the rails

Bachmann Europe Plc today revealed that it is to upgrade four versions of the popular N scale Mark 1 coaches.

Thanks Andy for posting this!!!

Thats my next layout sorted then, and the switch from OO to N. Was waiting for upgraded Mk1's (would also like Mk2's) to be announced!

Any news on the new style couplers?

Cheers

Joe

Items in blue represent new tooling since the last catalogue (some previously announced).

Great list and information, thanks, but I can't tell which are the 'blue' items. Is it none or all as they all look the same colour?

Mk Is in N gauge - fantastic, plugs one of the big remaining gaps. And I hope the OO 3F filters down too, the old Farish tooling needs updating to modern standards. But... Prototype Deltic in N?! ohmy.gif Logical given the OO model investment, but I don't think that was on anyone's guess list! biggrin.gif 03 effectively a tweak of the 04 tooling but welcome. On the face of it there's no new steam, but there's some 'catchup' items in there which are easy to overlook (and the Black 5 of course). Looks like the 9F isn't on the radar yet.

A conservative year (no new N buildings?), but the Mk Is alone is good news - hope they continue and do stuff like the full brake.

Frothing for 2011 can begin - Class 55 and 33 have both disappeared from the catalogue... cool.gif

No Network SouthEast stuff means my N gauge budget can remain very low this year.

Ditto -

was hoping the 37/5 would be scaled down to N this year too - need something so pull my Silver bullets and CDAs

New mk1s will definately be welcome though.

Same here Grahame, all black.

Nothing really of any use to me, but then I'm still waiting for the MML & EMT class 222, so it gives the old wallet a bit of breathing space!

I do hope that the 00 class 350 is eventually scaled down and converted into a 450 though as I'd have a few of those.

Need to see the catalogue to be sure, but does this mean the 70 isnt coming this year in N? Also, no 222 listed. Good to see the 101 finally on there, and the Deltic and 03 are nice additions.

I wasn't expecting much in N this time round (and we always get announcements later in the year anyway now) as so much is already 'on the way'. A bit surprised no EWS or DB class 37s though. Also no autoballasters in N yet...

Well that explains the dearth of Mk1 coaches, but how comes they do the announcement after I have just completed my two rakes of MK1 trains, well at least all my stock will look consistent.

Oh well, the MK1s of old aren't that bad and I can spend the money on Black 5s, Jubilees and whatever else Farish can throw at me.

Apart from the Mk1's and Deltic this is quite a quiet announcement (and only 6 replies so far), I expect there is more to come as and when tooling development dictates.

Hi David

I think these are additional releases for this year on top of the previously announced stuff, so the 222 & 70 will still appear. At least I hope so..... :huh:

Now fixed, I had formatting issues and 4% battery whilst on site I'm afraid.

I think the Mark 1s are a master stroke, the samples looked a big leap forward. I was very taken with the 3MT samples in the flesh, the 76xxx and Black 5 making up a trinity of the best UK 'N' steam locos I've seen.

Thanks for the information Andy - it's much appreciated. Did you manage to get any photos of the above? They've potentially thrown a serious spanner into my future plans...

I couldn't agree more - long wished-for, given the quality of the Mk. 1 suburbans, Pullmans & 'Super BGs'. The 'samples' comment has got the juices metaphorically flowing, too - I don't suppose you managed to get any pics, did you... :icon_drool:

New Mark1s will be welcome, although I have mixed feelings having just bought a full rake of old-style blue/greys to replace my old Poole ones. Such is progress, I suppose :)

Presume catering vehicles will follow; the RB/RBR would be the obvious one to do.

And I hope the OO 3F filters down too, the old Farish tooling needs updating to modern standards.

Farish never did a 3F - it was a Fowler 4F that has been done before.

If you want a 3F then it's already possible to get the excellent little Union Mills 3F.

Cheers,

Alan

Is the 101 definitely new tooling and coming this year? (not a hang over from previous promised 101 releases?)

Cheers,

Alan

The 108 came before the 101 in the releases because Bachmann found the 101 tooling to be shot. They have been working on a new tooling to 108 standards since.

Basically the list boils down to the following brand new items with all new tooling for 2010 since the last catalogue (although some had previously been announced).

* Black 5 4-6-0

* 4MT 2-6-0

* Class 03

* Class 14

* Deltic DP1

* Class 101 2 & 3 car DMU

* Class 108 3 car DMU

* BR Mark 1 Coaches SO, SK, BSK and CK

* 20 Ton Toad brake

* MBA bogie hopper wagon

* MOA bogie hopper wagon

Quite a decent and, dare I say it, fair list, although it's not exactly breathtakingly adventurous and exciting. Probably the surprising 'expected but missing' things for 2010 are the previously mentioned 3MT 2-6-2T, 9F, class 70 and the new coupler.
