Hi

Enjoyed reading your thread....

You asked your friend for pics of Exeter Central Cement depot......

I took these as dated on the scans....Hope they are of use....

Will be following with interest

Cheers Bill

Thanks Bill, just the sort of stuff I was looking for, I got the idea from Chacewater but with Exeter being Blue Circle as well I figured I could use inspiration from either  :)

I don't think I have anything useful photo wise of the terminal at Exeter Central.  Coal sector livery 37's did work the coal trains, I don't have any pictures myself but, I have seen a photo in a book of 37212 at Yeovil Jn in coal sector livery in 1990.  Oddly though I do have a shot of the same loco in BR blue in 1988 on the coal train!  In the early days of Speedlink Coal service the odd Canton 37/4 worked (1987 time if I remember correctly) and I also saw a split box example work it one day.

Hey John I take it you don't ever recall seeing a heavyweight 37/7 from Canton on it........Bachmann have a nice one with sound out at the moment

Keep the info coming though, all good stuff, I was at Teignmouth on Saturday, got some good reference pictures of the cliffs and vegetation. Scored 57605 as well as a bonus :)

No 37/7's worked, they were too heavy for the Castle Cary - Yeovil - Honiton - Exmouth Jn lines at the time the coal trains ran.  37/5's did appear.  There is always artistic licence though...  :D

I had a good day at the G&WR on Saturday.  Didn't see anybody there that I knew which was unusual.  Freaky coincidence though; you were at Teignmouth and I came back from my day out with a Regional Railways station name for Teignmouth!  I don't normally go for collectables but as I grew up there, it seemed rude not buy it!!!

Keep up the good work Adrian....I'm going to pinch your idea for putting the rooms in the station building (albeit the modern version), you've done a much better job of putting it together than I did - mine is a bit warped!

Interesting that you were worried about posting you railway on here? I only started in May this year and it's amazing how many people are very helpful.

Keep the updates coming.

Thanks for your kind words Mike, as for the station building I'm sure I got some of my ideas for the inside from here although the sliding aluminium doors are pure Teignmouth as I remember it as a kid and the counter was black too  :)

I'm not really worried, I'm proud of what I've achieved but sometimes look at other layouts in awe, that's all.......

Just a small update tonight, the first pic shows the layout 3 months old in the corner of my daughters bedroom. I soon realised I needed a discharge point for my CDA's at the docks so I fabricated one from a pack of Peco inspection pits. The final picture shows a building footprint and some first attempts at ballasting........

So instead of jumping off to some other area on the layout I thought I would share with you my first attempt at scratch building something, the building to house the clay discharge point. Not really based on anything, but ideas I guess came from watching the Railfreight Today: The South West DVD many times and also viewing pics of the structures installed at Burngullow in the 80's for loading the slurry into the silver bullets, albeit that they housed a different function.

Build up of structure

It fits  :)

Then a bit of a kop out really, Halfords grey primer, too dark for my final colour but can't find an automtive non metallic light grey aerosol.........guess it's going to be a lot of paint with my airbrush......lol

Could be quiet for a while now as I have my daughter with me for the summer  :sungum:

Hi

The building looks very good.....

I sprayed my buildings on Penhallick Junction with Halfords grey pimer as well & lightened them by weathering......

Saves a respray.......

Incidentally if the building at Burngullow is the one I think you mean then it was the wash out building for the slurry tanks....

The only clay discharge building would be the one at Fowey Docks.....

The main thing is it looks good,& there is no hard & fast design to follow,so if it looks right.....& it does....Then it is right....

Looking good & progressing well....

Enjoy the summer....Kids grow awful quick so enjoy them while they're young...

Cheers Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your lovely comments and your buildings on Penhallick Junction look great  :)  I have to admit I’m really struggling with dry-brushing, such a basic skill but I don’t seem to be getting the effects with it that I want or have seen other people achieve. I’m quite happy with the paint-on/wipe-off technique, in fact I used that mainly on the MFA spoil wagon in post #13, but dry brushing…..hmmmmmmm. Probably why I haven’t even considered doing any CDA’s yet.

I’ve been doing a dirty version of 50032 from its departmental days (more on that another time) but that gave me the opportunity to get a bit of a dirty dusting on the chassis’ of my spoil wagon consist with the airbrush. I think there is a slight improvement over my original post?

1118820208_Spoilconsist.JPG.ccd72a0c950be892af51a33cb430b5d6.JPG

Yes I do mean the wash out building for the slurry tanks, I get a bit general with some of my descriptions sometimes. In all honesty my building probably is a combination of the unloading facilities for the CDA’s at Fowey, the wash-out building at Burngullow and the discharge facility up here in The Potteries, got a glimpse of that in Railfreight Today:Vol. 1 The North West…… ;)

Once again, thank you for taking an interest in my thread I’m off back to yours now, I love the field at the front on the left :sungum:

Cheers

I know how you feel!

Loving the discharge shed build, it's given me a bit more ammunition to crack on and do my own buildings such as portacabins, a weighbridge and the road overbridges.

I'm no expert at dry brushing but get yourself a load of different shaped brushes and if need be, hack them up a bit. I found it was trial and error (and some of the effects I ended up with, I've never been able to recreate!) until I got what I wanted. The hardest part was getting the right colours, and in that, I mean colours that looked real rather than a painted model - if that make's sense?

Keep up the good work mate.

Hi

Thanks Iron Horse for the above comment....Your weathered wagons look very good......

I agree with scoobyra's comment  above.....

Really it's what works for you & don't be afraid to remove it if you're not happy with the result...

I find dry brushing a really difficult technique/skill quite often getting too much paint on the brush & it's too wet which ruins the effect....

Some people just do it....Most frustrating......

Also I find I've got to be in the mood to weather stock.....

Keep up the good work....

Cheers Bill

  • 1 month later...

So, good evening everybody, summer holiday is over, my family have had a fantastic holiday but it's back to reality now and what better way to start than to get stuck into this thread  :sungum:

So going back to the very early days, Richard at Trident Train taught me an early lesson, printed cardboard is not really a modelling  option so here's the result of trying to get some platforms modelled. Peco platform edging and brick embossed plastic

326031271_Platform1.jpg.fdf5209da33142c019b03a1faff70057.jpg

With a bit of colour added

1167426885_Platform2.jpg.1f0a422f5ccd5e6d7a5aa276ad7b901c.jpg

Mortar added but still very shiny rails

1981663478_Platform3.jpg.18cc7744126e146959918c543d7ef084.jpg

Well that's at least toned it down a bit.......

339813735_Platform4.jpg.413a6a148c7389dd387065b1b4e7ca02.jpg

And then with the platforms roughly located a view of the depot and the exit from the station

1597398069_DepotEnd.jpg.749b3b625a2a8e12919d1fbee7bfdfdd.jpg

A bit of structure added to the platforms

1987658296_Platform5.jpg.bb05d08ed5b4c5a740acb516af92736c.jpg

And then I tried like mad to create a pond/large puddle......more on this later

1428665741_Pond1.jpg.c34751d5ba9817ed48c50af263480c8d.jpg

Yes now I know less is more but I still fancied a little PW area so I added this around the headshunt to the main dock sidings, basic footprint created

1808408956_PW1.jpg.b2db089cd89573ef7fc671ddf083d29f.jpg

I made a separate ballast enclosure

118103234_PW2.jpg.cd8f280e4430f0ba24f43d0fde74ece7.jpg

And got some Wills concrete sheets glued down

14014623_PW3.jpg.977a0f74e576defd727ea39689249531.jpg

Then a few more

1450409249_PW4.jpg.25e0d08ecb4aaca3320ded786e158b90.jpg

And then finally for tonight an early attempt at starting to create a little life in the area

So tonights little instalment.

So the depot base was built up using Wills concrete sheeting

1007200105_DepotBase1.jpg.94d1b583567a97d1fb16f8885f06e2f0.jpg

Then in my wisdom, Humbrol's Oil Stain wash would be perfect. I did a test piece and still thought it would be OK and so off I went......

767157184_DepotBase2.jpg.dad94e63f5577a84171482fb92a8b0dc.jpg

Well that soon had thinners attacking it which I sort of liked but seemed too clean again

277207443_DepotBase3.jpg.47d80e9cf1cfffeaca76527728ab900e.jpg

So some grey washes later and a slightly more strategic use of Oil Stain Wash we arrived at this. Not quite what I intended but not as bad as it started out IMHO. Learnt a lot that day and although bearable it may all be redone one day.......

1338238734_DepotBase4.jpg.470b3373c6a0e853dc4c66902e74fe8a.jpg

And with some atmosphere........

Should have perhaps added this picture last night to sort of bring this corner of the layout up to date, brick wall and backscene added, I'll be asking for advice in this area later.....

Blimey Adrian. You've been really busy since I've been away. The layout is looking fantastic with so many new features. The Clay discharge building is superb. Really nice bit of scratch building. Great modelling all round.

Cheers

Marcus

Thank you Marcus for your kind words but to be fair I am playing a bit of catch up with pictures taken over the last couple of years (only just got brave enough to share them). I'm trying to show how parts of the layout developed to get where I am today. I'll then do some up to-date overviews which hopefully will tie in all of the individual areas and make a bit more sense....then you'll probably find updates will slow down as I do keep trying to fit in detailing and weathering RTR stock...........albeit of a fashion :)
