Ponthir28
Back in the fifties my father was a tanker driver for bp and shell Boxing Day out on a delivery. The garage owner was complaining that nobody was at the depot on Christmas Day.

We lived in a village in north Lincolnshire in the early sixties. The post lady delivered on Christmas morning but the problem was that by the time she got half way round she had had so many sherries she was not sure where she was going! RMweb Premium Ray H Posted December 30, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 30, 2021 I helped our milkman back in the day and vividly remember boxing day 1962 - the start of the big freeze that lasted around 3 months on the canals at least. We were out in the snow on Boxing Day morning. We'd started earlier than usual (as was our custom on bank holidays) and expected to finish the round not long after 9.30 (a.m.). No such luck, we were soon having to leave the milk float on the main road, put twine on some crates so we could then use the twine to pull said crates up the side roads as there was no way that the float would have got there or back (and as an electric float on a round several miles from the depot, the milkman had to be mindful of getting the float back to its depot before the battery ran down). Even the main roads were a struggle. Boy, was I glad to get back home around 2.30 (p.m.)? I'd never been so cold before or since and I'm convinced that spending so much time that winter out in the snow affected my sight - snow blindness? - which is why I hate bright lights nowadays). 2

What you mean.....not yet! What....another holiday approaching..... All right then, leave it for now....? New Year it is then, if of course that is fine with you lot? I have often wondered why this lot cannot fix a door. But when you realise one of the workers shows up with a shovel to fix a door, you begin to get a sense of the limitations of this particular work crew. The chap with the shovel may be more use at the crate unloading - but perhaps that is where he has come from after being asked to leave! Having said this I used to organise working bees at my kids' preschool and I was tasked with sending around to the other dads a list of the jobs we had been asked to do with suggested tools to bring. This one particular dad always showed up armed only with a trenching shovel. We never worked out if it was joke or he really only had one tool. 4

I think it was his way of saying 'I'm here for one job only, dig holes and if you don't want any holes digging then ask someone else' A psychologist would probably tell you the reason why but then again i think we have all dealt with someone similar to be honest so while waste time on ten dollar words.

Popular Post KNP
Little Muddle review of 2021 Not done this before as I quite often feel I've not done much to the layout so I thought I would use the RMWeb as a guide and see what was done... The first thing I noted was that over 150 pages have been added both by myself and the many followers of this thread which has added much merriment throughout the year. I thank all those that follow this thread and contribute to it. Also sadness with the loss of one of my most ardent followers and contributor, Mike Bonwick, whose knowledge, ability and humour will be sorely missed. Works (in no particular order!) 3no. Pannier updates 12ton LMS Van Container Wagon shackles LNER Pigeon van Numerous figures mainly from Modelu and Hardy's Hobbies Tricycle van Fordson N tractor The Unicorn PH 2no. Mink G vans Land Rover Prairie 5531 2no. Gunpowder vans Shirt button motif upgrades 56xx 6697 2no. PO Grain vans Dean tender chassis Ollie's signs Pannier 7750 Beetle prize cattle wagon Wagon tie bars As I said, first time I have listed what I have and really surprised at what has been done...many where not planned they just happened because I saw something advertised or an idea sprung into mind.. As for the future, well who knows, the layout is now approaching 14 years old and there will be at time when I can think of nothing more to do or might just get plain fed up with it...only time will tell what direction I go with Little Muddle. There are projects planned. Cattle dock Permanent way train formation Major repairs works to Overbrook Viaduct involving much scaffolding - still under review as I don't want to spoil the scenic effect of the area. Additional junk around the layout Rebuilding of The Station PH and shop Repairs to damaged trees. Whatever new, or second hand, rolling stock that catches my eye. New boat for the harbour More figures? not sure as this meant to be a quiet backwater.....! These should keep me entertained for a while, I expect additional things will happen as ideas pop into that old brain box, so watch this space. For now LM lives on..... 25

In many places, Carriage & Wagon Examiners (later Rolling Stock Technicians) were known as Lamp and Hammer men (and yes, they were all men in those days) - a legacy of the ancient position of wheeltapper. 1 2

Andrew P
Great up date and forward planning Kevin, Happy New Year to you and your followers. See, My wayward Mouse, (whom I must find a name for) did manage to kill off a couple of Adds this morning so that I could do a Post on here. I did try to do one on Bute Road yesterday, but couldn't get past the adds, so gave up and went to Western Thunder for some inspiration instead. I do enjoy your morning updates when I can get in. its whole different world in LM to the one we live in, just wonderful, thanks. 2 1
Popular Post KNP
Work underway on the cattle dock. Gone for side conversion of the loading bay, I understand it was a local project....! Buffers moved back to give room for one cattle wagon only at a time. Concrete base added to form an area for run off for......well you can guess!!...into central drainage channel. Metal gate to be fitted where shown with a another gate & fence at top of ramp where the mock up had decided to lean over just as I took the picture. Existing fence will have additional bars to look like it has been strengthened. A bit of a hybrid really but it does give me reason to run cattle wagons into LM.
