RMweb Gold russ p Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2018 Its been in for a while but other than stock storage its never had any rail traffic. With the road haulage lobby being so powerful I cant ever see it being used
black and decker boy
Isn’t that a different terminal? The class 56s are at the M&S terminal I believe. I could and probably are confused though. East Midlands Gateway being the brand new facility under construction at East midlands airport and which will replicate DIRFT for size. http://www.roxhill.co.uk/portfolio/kegworth/ Last time I went past it was still just a muddy worksite, no track etc started. RMweb Gold russ p Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2018 Ah right, not been built yet. I know where you mean now seem to recall the earthworks have been started
Wild Boar Fell
Go past EMG several times a week, the embankments and bridge (over a local road) are all in place. I'm not Civil Engineer, but don't things like this need time to stabilise before you then apply a load to them (happy to be corrected on that)? Fat Controller
I confess that when I saw 'Donnington', I thought of the place near Wellington where a terminal was built that seems to have seen very little traffic. It was only later that I realised that the one being talked about was that at Castle Donington, where the A50 joins the M1. I believe it's mainly intended to handle non-food lines for M&S. Presumably, it will deal in receiving containers from Southampton/ Felixstowe, unloading and warehousing the contents, then probably forwarding by road. black and decker boy
A bit of googling and I’ve found out that The M&S freight terminal where the GBRF 56s are stored is built on the former Castle Donington power station so nearby to EMG but not the same development. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted June 23, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 23, 2019 There is some news at last. I've just seen a copy of the June Railway Magazine, On Page 90 there is a report with a couple of photos of the terminal. One is of the new junction on the line from Sheet Stores Junction to Stenson Junction. The other is of the start of track laying in the terminal sidings. It doesn't say of the whole line has been laid. It's good to see some progress. Jamie
RMweb Gold griffgriff Posted June 23, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 23, 2019 There some rails down at the buffer stop end. The junction is physically complete with a loop. The track down the branch stops just short of the bridge near the top of the plan. Griff
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted January 25, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 25, 2020 Drove past yesterday. There are signs for the EMG Rail terminal as you approach Junction 23A from the south. Coming out of Donnington services headed north I got a good view of a terminal that us obviously in use with plenty if containers near the tracks but no trains. Rail magazine now informs me that it's open with at least 3 services running to it. Jamie
Edwin_m
Modern Railways says the same. However the location is Castle Donington, near East Midlands Airport. The thread title is confusing as there's another rail-connected terminal at Donnington near Telford. 1
RMweb Gold griffgriff Posted January 25, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 25, 2020 There’s been a train sat in terminal regularly at around 8:00 in the morning. I’m not sure when it’s timetabled to leave but it’s just getting light so a photo opportunity is possible. Griff
RMweb Gold TravisM Posted January 25, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 25, 2020 According to Realtime Trains, there are two return workings from Felixstowe to ERM. I believe they are DBC at the moment.
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted January 26, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2020 With an alleged capacity of 16 trains per day, things could get hectic! Mike.

That's only 8 in and eight out per day.. I do hope we see traffic from this site; so often, such projects end up as 'Greenwash.
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 6, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 6, 2020 Just to say that there is a 2 page article about the terminal in the latest Modern Railways. Also in Big Jim's thread he recently posted some pictures of the terminal. Jamie
johnw1
A couple of photos from the 19th September 2020 https://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/50360577041/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/50367121672/
birdseyecircus
There is also a path from Hull docks to East Midlands gateway on real-time trains. Route learning took place earlier in the year but the service has yet to run. Paul

The MR article mentions the sinuous approach. That shot shows it up well. Jamie
RMweb Premium corneliuslundie Posted October 7, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 7, 2020 The colours are so bright and clean it could be a model - though a big one, N perhaps. Jonathan
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 7, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 7, 2020 The article is very good. They obviously want to keep with reach stackers rather than gantry cranes. Also apparently there us room for another two tracks on the east side plus another loading/unloading pad leaving the run round road in the centre. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted August 7, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 7, 2021 When I started this thread 4 years ago the terminal was a sea of mud. 2 days ago I drove past it on my first trip back to the UK for nearly 2 years. We stopped at Donnington on the way from the ferry and as we set off north it was great to see a train in the terminal and lots of containers around. It certainly seems to be well used. Nice to see progress. Jamie
Edwin_m
For information, only two Ns in "Donington" although it's pronounced as if there were three. There's a Donnington near Telford, which confusingly is the site of another, but less successful, rail freight terminal. 1

I believe his fitness programme involves running a circuit of the terminal whilst his train is being loaded.... 1
