She will look a stunner and have the cognoscenti arguing about which Adams class she is! Sem, you realise I'm planning to do 2 Radial-to-tender conversions; one a pukka Class 380 Steamroller and the other a freelance version for CA, so I will watch this with very close interest. Bon chance.

Nope. 2 minutes ago, Edwardian said: She will look a stunner I certainly hope so... 2 minutes ago, Edwardian said: and have the cognoscenti arguing about which Adams class she is! I certainly hope so, though the Wainwright boiler is designed to cause yet more confusion, as is the 'A' number. It won't be A000 though, that's just because the SECR numbering system (hahaha...) is so ruddy incoherent that I've yet to actually work out where the gaps lie after 1910, when this loco was allegedly absorbed by them. 2 minutes ago, Edwardian said: Sem, you realise I'm planning to do 2 Radial-to-tender conversions; Are you now... 2 minutes ago, Edwardian said: one a pukka Class 380 Steamroller I am tempted to do one in the future, certainly. 2 minutes ago, Edwardian said: and the other a freelance version for CA, so I will watch this with very close interest. Edwardian
Modelling under compulsion .... I have to do a Steamroller for Barnstaple Town as it's one of only two 4-coupled tender engine classes that could fit the Ilfracombe turntable in those days. As we know, Adams's early 4-4-0s and Beyer Peacock's in-house designs were very similar! Given that I must do one conversion, a second, freelance one for CA also becomes a virtual requirement; with 5'7" coupled wheels, it's the right size for a WNR passenger loco and, of course, is a nod towards the neighboring Lynn & Fakenham/MGN A Class Beyer Peacocks, so normal for Norfolk.
sem34090
And so it begins! I quite liked the look with half the cab removed... but onwards the saw must go! Then the chassis - I needed to remove the keeper plate to chop it. The boiler simply unscrews, which is especially helpful as it should make substituting the Wainwright one in much easier. I've removed the original PCB and pins which take power from pickups to motor, threaded the wires through the remaining holes and will solder these to the pickups. Looks like it's coming along well, Sem. I look forward to see things progress further.

sem34090
Progress! Also, how about a little tender for a very small loco?
sem34090
So.. The boiler... I haven't modified either Adams bits or Wainwright bits in this regard. As can be seen, the new boiler sits much higher than the old one. There are several apparent issues though. Comparing old and new boilers shows the two to be quite similar: Now, I reckon the first step will be to remove the lower sides of the C's smokebox - This would also negate some of the height issues - Let's see what happens! 3

RMweb Gold Corbs Posted April 29, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 29, 2019 This is so cool! Even the mockup 'plonked on' looks good.
sem34090
I preferred the higher pitch in some ways, but the lower pitch sits on the chassis better. I need to do some modifications concerning the front end, but it's coming together - 4
Skinnylinny
This is looking really good! I had been having similar thoughts for the GSR 4-4-0 express loco design, especially as the 0-6-0 mixed-traffic and the 2-4-0 passenger locos both use GBL C class boilers. I may have to steal some of your ideas! 2
sem34090
Well, a word of warning to you, Linny - There is a lot of fettling required on the boiler!!! Especially if you are only replacing the boiler and are keeping much of the original Radial body.

Skinnylinny
I do, yes! I currently have a Radial sat here, although the intention for this one is to repaint it to the Drummond livery and keep it as it is. If I were to come across another chassis, however...
sem34090
Well, much fettling (for the marsh...) has been done and here is the dry-fitted result: 3
