Trev52A
Three near King Edward Bridge Junction, Gateshead, from the 1980s..  43049 'Neville Hill' southbound on 20th June 1987  43107 northbound on 24th September 1988. According to my book 'HST Silver Jubilee' this was named 'City of Derby', but the nameplates don't look right. Can anyone please confirm?  A nice 'glint' shot of 43054 at the same spot in December 1988  Trevor

Peter Kazmierczak
Derby only became a city in July 1977, so it was fitting that the great hope for the future (APT) would have a power car named after the place where it was designed, developed and built. Hence Sc49003 had the rather attractive plate unveiled in June 1978. Â Fast forward to 1986 and the APT is dead, so the same plates are removed from said APT and fitted to 43107 in May 1986. Fortunately the wording on the plate didn't specifically mention APT but "power car", so could equally well apply to a HST - after all the trailers were built in the city. The plates only lasted on 43107 until December 1988.

SWT442
A couple of the NMT on local metals. Â First up, 43062 "John Armitt" and 43014 are seen at Brockenhurst on a quiet evening in June 2010. The NMT had around a 20 - 30 minute stop off, probably as a driver break. The working was 1Q23 Basingstoke to Old Oak Common via Weymouth. Â Â Â Â Fast forward 6 years, and the same pairing are seen at Mottisfont & Dunbridge. The power cars now have an addidtional top headlight, I believe to enable operation on HS1. The working this time was 1X23 Salisbury to Salisbury via a reversal in Southampton Up Goods Loop. Â Â Â A video of them in action: Â Â The working 1X23 runs every 6 - 8 weeks, and happens off the back of an Old Oak Common and return working via Yeovil. There have been occasions were late running sees the Southampton portion ignored, plus if the NMT is unavailible, top and tail 67's can turn up instead on the MK2 rake. Â Andy. I don’t know how common it was to swap power cars between the Western, Eastern and Cross Country fleets. Or, of course, it could be a different one altogether. Doesn't appear to be unless it lost its aerial. 43038 carried a full yellow end but with white cab roof, so again similar but not a match. All the others that carried that style seem to have been surrogates, so fitted with buffers.  Dave

I have since found a picture of 43003 on the WR in 1988 with the full yellow end, no buffers and an aerial so I reckon that could well be the one in post #47. 43002/3/4/5 were finished in Swallow with full yellow ends in 1988. Have never worked out why. Were they earmarked for buffer conversion, painted experimentally or was there a mix up with painting diagram? Here's 43005 at Bristol Temple Meads with a Penzance-Edinburgh cross-country working on Saturday 8th October 1988. Edit need to re-check as noticed the red marker lights are on, which would suggests this is not the PZ-Ed working. Will re-check my notes.  Update - the date is correct, but I see in my notes I have recorded the working as Edinburgh-Penzance. Recall sets terminating in Platforms 3/4 at Temple Meads but rarely working through on this line. Formation on this date was 43132/005, 41159, 40403, 42286/90/94/98.  Edited June 28, 2018 by Commoner
Trev52A
Thanks to everyone who has replied so far trying to identify the HST power car in my post #144. It seems that the overall yellow end, no buffers and no aerial might make this one unique(?) so I'm hoping someone else has a picture they can share.
