There's 3 balance pipes. one between the 2 side tanks, and the 2 pipes, which tun from the bunker tank, to either tanks. I'd guess you would use the bunker tank as fuel, with the other remaining as water use.

With an eight-wheel bunker tank you'd probably carry enough fuel to get from Penzance to Thurso an' back ......... stopping every ten miles for water, of course.

Which would give the fireman time to shovel coal forward over the zig-zag floor of the bunker.

A Mallet has a mix of high pressure and low pressure cylinders reusing the steam on a usually articulated wheel arrangement.  Otherwise if steam goes directly to both (or in some cases 3) sets of drivers it is just a simple articulated. The Mallet name is capitalized as it is named for the French designer of the high/low steam arrangement on an articulated rather than a compound.

It was the Erie Railroad triplex 2-8-8-8-2 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triplex_(locomotive) that really caused a bit of  stir.

Somewhere on YouTube is a 7 inch gauge live steamer of one of those in action, fascinating to watch a listen to.

If it were an oil fuel tank, the rivets on the image would look different.

Oh dear! Of course, it does depend on where the proposed oil tank would go.

It's funny, but when the VoR locomotives were converted, much work was done to disguise the oil tank. Nobody noticed for quite a  long while.

....or you can have a table top model......:D

Off to find the 7" version....Thanks SS for the tip off....

Here you go Gordon - although it was actually 7.25" gauge.  And very nice it was too although the articulated was a simple, not a Mallet (and I did manage a ride behind it on one of my visits).  a great shame taht Dobwalls closed but it might have been financial as JohnSouthern ploufghed a huge amount of money into the railway and the motive power.

And while you need to exercise patience it does appear working a train on this 'home movie' style video -

Thanks Mike, but aren't they Big Boys and not the Erie Triplex?

The only one I could find is this video from Train Mountain. Wow, that looks impressive...

Even then the title refers to a Triplex, but it isn't. The Triplex is shown in two parts of the video and it's not clear if the loco pulling is the Triplex or another Big Boy or similar...

Not sure if I'll ever get to the US again, but Train Mountain will be on my list of places to go. The Americans really are spoilt for space......

Edit. Just watched again and the guy in the check shirt driving is in charge of the Triplex. The loco pulling alongside in the first few minutes threw me......

That's the beast, plenty of time lost looking at some of the footage, as you say Gordon, spoilt for space,  just like the modelling.
