South-East Rail
Hi all, Does anyone have any pictures of/detailed information about the pair of DRS Mk2E BSO escort coaches (9506 & 9508)? Specifically, I'm interested in the internal and external modifications made to these vehicles for their use in escorting MOD nuclear fuel workings. I can only find a few photos on flickr and the internet more broadly (I'm not looking for the older Mk2A pair, 9419 & 9428). Thanks in advance! Gordon A
We have an ex converted escort coach at Bitton. I believe it was converted in the navy workshops, but never used as all the wiring was not suitable for a carriage.
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted September 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 26, 2020 Typing "drs 9506" or "drs 9508" into flickr.com will help with external details. Or "9508 escort" - but be careful as that will also show a few "bonus" pictures...................... This then leads to the likes of 6C72 and further search parameters. The main external mods seem to be different widow frames and a grille on the side. As well as removal of corridors as per 9419/9428.. The recent move was 6Z68 - that also throws up a few useful pics of 9506. Youtube videos may show roof details. 1 1
pb_devon
Due to their use, I think it highly unlikely there will be publically available images of the interior. But well done if you do find any!
jonhall
I hadn't been paying sufficient attention - are those sliding toplights? rather a long time ago I did a stainless steel etch that had the hopper style toplights for the Northern Belle support coach - I wonder if they would do for the DRS coaches?
PerthBox
Yes, they are sliding toplights as per the older pair.
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted September 27, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 27, 2020 (edited) Looks like there's a roof exhaust [*] pause at 1.17 [*] Which points to an onboard generator - doesn't surprise me as the usual traction doesn't have any form of train heating/power. (Must go back and look at 9419/9428...) Edited September 27, 2020 by newbryford 1
South-East Rail
Thanks for the informative replies, everyone. I've started on a Hornby DRS BSO today. Does anyone know what the lights on one end of each vehicle are for (as shown below) and whether similar lights are available in 1:76? Ed
PerthBox
The lights shine onto the flask, it is under constant observation by MOD police during the whole journey. The coaches are always coupled with the observation window and lights facing the flask wagon(s).

I suppose they do need somewhere to sit and relax when taking a break.
South-East Rail
I've been doing a bit of work on the first of these coaches: So far I have: - removed gangways & plated over ends - drilled a hole in the roof to represent the generator exhaust - replaced one end window with a grille - weathered the underframe. More to follow at some stage! Ed Edited October 7, 2020 by South-East Rail 8
