Yep, me too.   I had a Lima one, you know.

When I was about 10, so 1976-ish, my mother and I went to London to stay with my uncle.   Standing on Darlington station, I could hear this dull rumbling getting louder, then I started to feel it through the soles of my feet.   It came under the canopy in a deafening roar and this huge shiny blue wall swept past me in a blast of heat and magnificence.  I’ve never forgotten it and that sound still does something to me.

Has to be a 55 Deltic for me as well. I think it was the only class that I ever copped all of.

Class 55 Deltic, it has to be a Deltic.

As much as I like Grids, Bones and Tugs they're not as charismatic as the Deltics.

Production Deltic for me too.

Though I do like a 56.

I don't like prejudging things, but the identity of the winner of the type 5 category already appears to be rather clear. Nothing wrong with that of course, there are some locos which really do seem to most people to stand out from the crowd.

I wouldn't want anyone to be put off voting because they think the result is a foregone conclusion though, so how about a separate poll for non passenger working type 5s? The two can then run side by side.

Oops, forgot the tea break image. It features the one that got away, our little J3, that the official records would have you believe was scrapped several years ago. It is running tender first along the engine road, on its way to do some light shunting down at south yard, or possibly Fletton.

Now, and in retrospect, that is what epitomises the railway to me - be it branch or main line.

You can keep your gleaming Pacifics - the staple diet of us trainspotters was the mundane and unremarkable - even if we did deride such locos at the time.

A wonderful, atmospheric photo.

Regards,

John Isherwood.

I love the J3 Gilbert and agree with John's comment above, although I like gleaming (and not so gleaming) Pacifics too!

Best wishes,

Alastair

Just so it’s not alone, can I change my vote to Kestrel as well? Hopelessly romantic I know, as it was a prototype that never succeeded, but what the heck?

I would be tempted to vote for the Deltic on the Alcan traffic in 2011! But ok you said Freight only so will go cl 58

Another vote for the production version of the Deltic - - preferably in dark green with light green stripe along the bottom.

For a freight type 5 I'd go for the Class 56.

Glad you like it John,

For some reason it seems to work more quietly in reverse (or did). Not so bad, I suppose, for the likes of a J3, but annoying in a Pacific I've built!

Regards,

Tony.

56 for me on freight.

Passenger type 5 has to be a Deltic in two tone green with small yellow warning panels, any of them in that scheme but D9003 Meld was the first diesel I ever had a model of and someone even put a light in it for me, so was by far my favourite when I was 5 years old.

Type 5 freight would have to be a class 60, love the shape of them.

cheers

Tony

.They had Racehorse names like St Paddy,Ballymoss,Nimbus,Crepello but what were they called?

.Class 55 Production Deltic.

Then Freight  Class 56 easily.

I could be silly with my choice of Type 5 loco and suggest 47 601 (later 47 901) but for a change I will be sensible. A class 58 is my choice.

If it is I shall vote for it, as an honorary Deltic.

It still does Tony, but so do my J6s, so it seems to be a characteristic of those models from London Road. We've never managed to cure it in any of them.
