Re - the above...

Am I right in thinking that Dilton Marsh received an "aluminium platform" somewhen in the 80's, that mysteriously disappeared one night?

The platforms were rebuilt around then but not lengthened.  To this day you are required to board and alight by the front door only of the leading carriage.  SDO makes that easy on a 150 or 158.  When the service was loco-hauled with 5 or 6 on you had to find the guard's van and hope the driver pulled up at the right place.  Which don't always happen on the curve with poor sighting.  3H units were a pain there as well since without gangways it was impossible to ensure people were in the DMBS; more than one door was opened from another coach alongside a very big drop - adverse cant and a steep embankment making the jump even more risky than it otherwise might be.

I can apprteciate the problem as we still have the same issue re the two halts on the Severn Valley. Country Park is straight so not too much of a problem but Northwood is on a curve and with 8 on and the crossing wig wags sighting can be a problem. Have had to use the setter on occasion when the fireman could not see my stop because the wig wag board was in the way. Still if it wasnt difficult it would not be so interesting.
