Severn Valley Railway

I did see a picture once of Bewdley in 1970, shortly before closure to passengers and with "corporate image signage". I've seen pictures of Arley station in the same period, with the pre-preservation Up line (now the Up & Down Main) removed. I don't recall seeing any shots of coal trains in this period, but I'm sure there must be some out there!

Thanks to everyone who attended and made for a very enjoyable Spring Gala on the Severn Valley Railway....the weather lovely and sunny this afternoon....(sadly Witherslack Hall couldn't take part but thankfully saw it as a light engine movement on Thursday before being withdrawn)....Cheers and regards to all Bob

What happened to Witherslack?

As BobM says, Witherslack Hall developed a 'hotbox' on its inner bogie wheel and unfortunately missed all diagrams during the Spring Gala. Bradley Manor was also out of action, which slightly took the gloss off the event for me. The Hall has had the wheel set removed for remedial work in the shed at Bridgnorth as the image shows (making it a Modified Mogul). Hopefully it will be sorted in time to run over the Easter Weekend.

We all really enjoyed the gala and there were a few failures that were fixed a pannier on Friday night and 1450 on Saturday night when we thought 5 bars needed replacing to find in the end 11 were replaced. The workings were different, which makes it interesting for the crews. Even though it was cold I hope everyone who came enjoyed themselves as much.

Here are a selection of images from the Spring Gala at the weekend. Despite the un-servicability of 6990 & 7802, it was an enjoyable event as always. The highlight for me was a spirited dusk doubleheader up the valley behind 6412 & 6430……magic!

Eventually managed to get a trip behind Witherslack Hall before it returns to the Great Central Railway. The weather was pretty bad on Saturday, resulting in challenging driving conditions with a heavy train and wet rails. The Hall didn't seem as sure footed as the Manor, that's for sure! Photo opportunities were limited but here are a couple from Highley.

Thought you may like to see a few (albeit poor images) from yesterday,,,one of the advantages of volunteering at Arley is that you get to see some lovely views and lung fulls of that wonderful burnt coal tang !

Have a good week guys...Regards Bob

One final image as I went to empty the contents of my wheelbarrow onto the bonfire pile, just had to halt at the access gate for a moment, to take in.....'one of those views'...that makes volunteering on the SVR at Arley, so rewarding!

Instead of the usual drive over to Arley for volunteering duties this Thursday on the station maintenance / gardening team...decided to take advantage of the southbound (up) service, it was a cracking morning, sunny and quite a bit of preparation work underway with three in steam loco's plus two charters, so five in total, almost a 'gala',,,,,there's always time and great pleasure to watch the activity beforehand, here (my favourite loco) 2857 was being coaled and watered in readiness for service, an obligatory ' toasted, bacon and sausage sandwich, is always a must to round off a perfect view!

Understand that '6990' Whitherslack Hall' is to remain with us (SVR) for the next two weekend first off Bridgnorth services....should be good!  Have a great weekend everyone...BobM

I visited on Thursday. Was a fantastic day. Had 2857 for most of two return trips with the exception of a run from Kidderminster - Highley behind 43106. Great to see the charters were made up of four or five carriage trains rather than the usual single carriage.

Great to hear you had a good day riding the cushions, it was a beautiful day too for working outside on the gardens at Arley. it can be rather 'inclement' sometimes, but it is fun in all weathers as long as it provides passengers and visitors with a good day out!

What a way to travel to and from 'work',,,it's tough I know, but someone has to do it...eh?  (Only wish this was an every day mode of transport)..........

As many of you will know Flying Scotsman is confirmed as attending the Pacific Power event with Tornado in September. The dates available for operation were specified to us and there has been considerable negotiation to work things out. It was the events of the re launch of the engine which was far higher than ever before which led to the decision to have a specific event for this and move our normal autumn gala to November. (night running for that event is still being considered, although originally thought to be too much by the committee of volunteers who look after events, however listening to the comments on line the committee is seriously looking at this again)

This morning 7000 tickets went on sale and the sheer demand which is far higher than ever received meant the website had problems which the railway apologised for and understands fully that some people were disappointed to not be able to get tickets for the event. The staff worked really hard today to deal with all the phone calls and people calling in person for tickets. The net result of which is that at the end of today the event is all but sold out.  The number of trains, coaches and operating days are all set by the NRM so the SVR does not have the ability to be more flexible.

I understand the NRM has said it will be available for other days, but only as a static exhibit.

The planning for the event is still ongoing with discussions with both the ELR and NYMR as to the lessons they have learned from hosting the engine, which allows time for plans to be put in place.

It is upsetting as a long term volunteer that there are some who appear intent on attacking the railway, even though its prices are the same as the NYMR and operating in the same way.

It will be 5 days of very hard work, which possibly is of more interest to Jo public rather than enthusiasts, however it all helps towards keeping the railway, its tracks, viaducts and bridges which still need 100,000's of thousands spending on them in working condition.
