Chubber
Looking at the track on which the wagon is standing, it appears to simply have a 'dog-leg' in it! No pretense of a curve, so maybe my track-laying isn't so un-prototypical after all! Doug
RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted November 13, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 13, 2012 Some cracking pictures here; a fascinating subject about which I'm afraid I know so little. It's having threads like this that fills in the gaps for us bystanders... Any shots of North Wales Coast signals/boxes? Regards David
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted November 13, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2012 Any shots of North Wales Coast signals/boxes? I photographed all the signals (literally) from Chester to Holyhead and Llandudno and some on the Ffestiniog branch, and all the boxes (outside only except for a few) in the late 1970s, and kept the collection up to date for a few years, one day they will appear, sadly most have not been scanned yet, so they are in the "to be done" queue. RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted November 13, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2012 I still wonder how a former District Inspector who I knew well in later years managed what he claimed to have managed when as a Booking Lad in the earlier years of the war he had 'shared' one such shelter with a Lady Signalman Ingenuity among young men is legion in such circumstances, Mike! And, after all, it was always expected that a booking lad in the course of his duties would receive a little on-the-job training!

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted November 13, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2012 Ingenuity among young men is legion in such circumstances, Mike! And, after all, it was always expected that a booking lad in the course of his duties would receive a little on-the-job training! According to Ron - who taught me an awful lot about signalling and associated stuff over a few years and who reacted like lightning a decade later when he was a Supervisor in Reading panel and I rang from an SPT to report a train on fire and told the Signalman to immediately put certain signals to danger (the trust of knowing each other that was present in the old railway - you say put back so & so signals, the Signalman calls Supervisor to the phone and the latter hears your name and immediately puts the signals back without a full explanation of the why, wherefore and a copy of your Birth Certificate). Anyway back to Ron's days when booking - things progressed in the 'box to having to having 2 Signalmen on each turn due to increased wartime traffic levels etc and that resulted in two Lady Signalmen on his turn. And his claim in later years that they both valued his attention although never, I think, at the same time. The job really isn't what it used to be I'm afraid. RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted November 13, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2012 Meanwhile back at pulling offsignalling Ellesmere Port No.2, an LMS cabin, or more likely a project planned by the LNWR and completed by the LMS, in the early days the lack of an LMS box would mean continuing with the pre-group standards. This box was abolished in 1983, just over 60 years old Ellesmere Port No.2 down home, with Ellesmere Port No.4 down distant below, also acting as Ellesmere Port No.5 down outer distant. The overbridge mentioned here is visible
