Hi all,

Went to the Manchester show and saw no-one I knew for the first time ever in some 30 odd years. It was quite quiet possibly due to the lack of Northern Rail train services. The show had a few layouts I found worth looking at and my two favourites were 'Black Lion Crossing BR-GC' and 'North Ballachullish'. There was plenty options for buying but for once I restrained myself to just a couple of books and some fine detailing chain and a pack of Slaters 2mm letters which when I got home I found were mostly split and only good for the bin me thinks!

Hopefully get some modelling done tomorrow!

Hi all,

Managed a little playtime today which actually followed on from last week! If you recall thee was an out of gauge load sat in the station area alongside the despatched 40T crane sent from Hellifield to carry out the lift.....

post-5296-0-52248600-1543765771_thumb.jpg

Just emerging from Widdale tunnel we see EE Type 1 D8046 nose first.

post-5296-0-83483700-1543765773_thumb.jpg

The Type 1 draws up to the outer home.

post-5296-0-64582600-1543765776_thumb.jpg

The signalman draws the train forward to the box for instructions.

post-5296-0-45188700-1543765779_thumb.jpg

The Type 1 draws toward the station passing the already prepared raised jib of the crane.

post-5296-0-13642800-1543765782_thumb.jpg

D8046 is positioned to align the Lowmac wagon astride the crane and Mammoth low loader.

post-5296-0-53945500-1543765784_thumb.jpg

The crane driver takes the strain and lifts the large wooden case.

post-5296-0-13535500-1543765787_thumb.jpg

Swinging the load over the crane deck its positioned onto the Lowmac wagon.

post-5296-0-68670900-1543765789_thumb.jpg

Naturally being the 1960's and long before H&S reared its all encompassing 'can't do that' regime the job had to carry on therefore wrong line working is sanctioned for the passing of the 1S64 'Waverley' express.

post-5296-0-88685500-1543765792_thumb.jpg

At the head of the Waverley is Sulzer Type 4 D95, one of the split-box designs which suited the class very well.

post-5296-0-44010400-1543765795_thumb.jpg

The train is of course traversing the Up line at a slow speed for safety's sake, good enough back in those days.

The 'Peak' creeps past the loaded Lowmac.

The crane now completed its task is swung back over the match wagon.

The crane jib now lowered and secured the 4MT begins propelling it back along the refuge siding.

42138 creeps past the box.

The Type 1 draws forward into the platform and the road is set for it also to set-back into the refuge siding.

No unfortunately I don't have any MRC articles, if anyone knows which issues they are in I may be able to source them from our club shop or at exhibitions. I have copies of Railway Modeller going back to the 70's but no index.CheersMike

David's articles on little long drag were in the Modeller. I still have them all in a folder somewhere. I'll try and dig them out and, assuming I find them, copy them for you.

Hi all,
Apologies guys I'm having difficulties on RMWeb and only just been able to upload this message (hopefully) after more than a week of trying.
To 'DENBRIDGE's post above, my comment is from way back in 2012 so can't understand why that has been answered, I now have the Jenkinson articles thanks.
To 'NICK03787's post I have been attempting to go back to page 70 but this problem is preventing me, if I sort it I'll get back to you.
**********
Now the new year has got into swing I hope to post more including some video's taken over several years of exhibition visits, heritage line visits and on the main line - up to a point when I got bored completely with the modern scene.
Happy new year all.

Just tried posting this 5/1/19 and no luck still !!!!!!!!!!!

Had a discussion with Andy Y and hopefully this will work now.

Hi Nick,

Sorry finally have access to postings, it was a 'cookie' issue it seems.

The templates were drawn using Templot but I never saved them, to be honest my brain was getting scrambled, fantastic program but proved to be beyond my understanding.

The book is 'Portrait of the Settle-Carlisle' by David Joy and published by Dalesman ISBN: '0 85206 806 9' there is a mix of black+white and colour photo's combined with some interesting information, should easily pick one up on ebay or abebooks.

Hope this helps

Hit it with a hammer Mike it might work :nono:  :jester:

As an ex REME Gun Fitter just hitting with a 'ammer doesn't always work. Now we were taught how to use various weighted 'ammers on different parts of artillery guns and tanks. The skill is hitting it in the right place, with the right weight 'ammer, with the right force and accompanied with the correct abusive swear words.

Mike being an ex diesel fitter will have a good selection of the later, it is the synchronizing of the wallop and the anger in the insult of the object being clotted that can make all the difference.

Hi guys,

Following a few 'technical' tweeks it seems I may be up and running again so here's hoping.

Over the Xmas break I compiled some 25 or so videos taken from the late 1990's which feature in the main various exhibition layouts, heritage railways and the main line up to perhaps only the early part of this century when I simply got tired of seeing units and silly liveries. I don't as yet have much video of Dent, some very early build sequences do exist with the spirals and little else but this will be rectified over the coming year.

Okay got to go to work so keep looking in especially around weekends guys.

Hi all,

I have been busy tidying up the layout and making some wagon loads which will be posted once finished, for now here's a change of scene. This layout belongs to a friend of mine Alisdair MacDonald and is based on Whithorn in Dumfries and Galloway, cracking modelling Alisdair!

Hope you like guys.

Hi all,

I mentioned in my last post I was playing with some video footage so here is my first effort which is all taken at various exhibitions, do let me know what you think as its all new to me. Hope you enjoy.

Ah! Hit my first hurdle - You aren't permitted to upload this kind of file

I presume I have to upload it via YouTube and find some way of linking it, suggestions gratefully accepted guys.

Hi all,

Sadly no running this weekend as I have been having annoying derailments at the south fiddleyard for some time I decided on some rash improvements. The problem has existed since scrapping the spirals and attempting to use the entrance 'fan' which was made to suit this old location but was sort of 'modified' to fit the new arrangement which was a bit of a rush job and looked a bit of a pigs ear to be honest. There was a lot of slewing of points and re-alignment of sidings just to get things running ASAP. I went in yesterday with no particular task in mind just moving some stock around which derailed more often than not so out came the big hammer!

I can't easily find an image of how it was on Friday but this is the state of play as of today...

post-5296-0-07460900-1548016829_thumb.jpg

Initially after track removal I placed suitable points in approximate positions

post-5296-0-78036400-1548016831_thumb.jpg

Using a flexible plastic strip I traced the outermost route from the 'Up' main to road  No.1

post-5296-0-58967200-1548016835_thumb.jpg

The plastic strip is held firmly by pairs of nails to form the reverse curve

post-5296-0-32360900-1548016838_thumb.jpg

As things stand there are 4 points refitted, the first is the return to the DMU sidings at the bottom of the photo

post-5296-0-92623900-1548016840_thumb.jpg

The DMU test train has been run through on a proving run

I have only carried out the alterations to the 'Up' line or arrivals section to allow opportunity for running trains whilst all the mayhem continues.
