USATC S160 Locomotive in 7mm scale (well that's the plan)

Recommended Posts

I'm gathering as much information drawings pictures etc for a possible scratch build semi kit of a USATC S160. If any one has any info they can share I would very much appreciate it.

OzzyO will be the builder and Pete Harvey is working with us to see what parts can be etched.

I have come across one that has been scratch built before so it proves it can be done.

I'm interested to no if there's any off the peg items like wagon bogies from US suppliers that could be used on the tender.

Any info is all welcome Thanks

Steve

I remember an article in an old copy of "Model Railways".  It was April 1977, by Dennis Allenden, but concerned modification of a proprietary HO 2-8-0 into an S160*.  Unfortunately the only scale drawing was a dimensioned comparison between the two locomotives.  It does refer to a Skinley print scale drawing (no. 451, if that means anything these days), which (as with that genre) was "mostly accurate".

Standard references are Tourrett's "Allied Military Locomotives of the Second World War" and the monograph "Over Here: Story of the USATC S160".  I'm pretty sure I've seen drawings somewhere, if I can remember where...

*Let's not get into pedantry about the use of the classification "S160", we know what we mean even if it may always be the correct term!

Hello EddieB,

IIRC this is about the first rear view of the tender, looks to have a number of Mod's. from when first built!

OzzyO.

You'll probably find it something of a minefield, given the wide sphere of operation.  Some examples in Hungary had extended chimneys and modified cabs/fireboxes, for example (sorry, only preserved/stored examples, but covering one from each builder).

Is there any reason for keeping two threads on this subject, and would they not be better merged?

Steve got a bit over-enthusiastic. Anyhow I've sent all my S160 drawings - including the Skinley one - to Pete Harvey, at Steve's request. Hope they'll be of use, and maybe it might be possible to do some etches in 4mm as well as 7mm scale.

Pete got the drawings today, many thanks they will be a big help.

I posted two threads because of the prototype. I thought there may be visitors who where more likely to only visit the US part of the forum and would have valuable info who would have missed it on the modelling Qs area.

I've no objection to both threads being merged all though I'm not sure where the best place is.

I will be modelling the loco in British condition when in use in the UK, But please keep posting pictures of them where ever they may be.

Ok, here's another PKP locomotive rear view.  This is Tr203-36 acting as a station pilot at Torun, also taken in August 1976.  Unlike the locomotive at Pyskowice there has been no enlargement of the coal bunker.

Some more examples, sadly after a long time out of service.

In Greece, the State Railways (SEK) received 27 USATC 2-8-0 locomotives after the War (1947).  They were classified theta-gamma (ϴγ) and allocated running numbers 521-537 and 551-560.  The class was strengthened by a further 25 locomotives acquired second-hand from the Italian State Railways (FS) in 1955.  These were FS class 736 and were allocated numbers in the 571-595 range.

ϴγ 532, stored at Thessaloniki, November 2001.  BLW 70481/1944, USATC 3524.
