Photo c/o Geoff Emson : 47 538 at Bescot on northbound tanks, 6th June 1975, I've never quite got to the bottom of why it lost its 'Python' nameplates when it was renumbered into Tops and converted to ETH...

Wasn't too sure which would be the correct thread for this photo, so I plumped for this one. I don't have an exact date, but the photo was taken during Railtrack days so I'm guessing about 1999 - 2001ish (but could be a bit earlier). We (Railtrack) were doing surveys of various Yards/Sidings with EWS that they would like to lease (long term, 125 years IIRC) from Railtrack, to agree boundaries, maintenance responsibilities etc., in this particular case at Milford. Whilst plodding about the sidings area a 47 hove into view, I would normally have ignored it (during work hours anyway) as at the time they were pretty much 10-a-penny and not an unusual sight. However, I then noticed what was in the consist and quickly got the camera out.

With enlarging the photo I think I can make out "23" on the front of the cab, so that would make it either 47x23 or 4723x. Can any of the 47 aficionado's out there positively identify it?

As for the load, I'm pretty sure it consists of 84001 and 26020 being dragged from the NRM to an open-day somewhere, or if my orientation is bad, being dragged back to the NRM.

Hope it is of some interest and provides a bit of a challenge in identifying the 47.

Looks like 4723x. I suspect you have the choice of two; 47234 and 47237. 47236 also carried this livery, but was named.

My money is on 47237 based on the headcode blanking plate lights; 234 looks to have had the larger lenses at both ends.

Many thanks Claude. 13 minutes - that's impressive!

Definitely NOT 47237, which had a rebuilt flat front at No 2 end http://www.class47.co.uk/c47_zoom_v3.php?img=1455020977000

The last digit looks much more like a 6. How certain is the date? 47236 was named in October 1996. The last digit doesn't really look like a 4, but perhaps it is 234?

Sorry, brushman, I can't be specific with the date at this time. I'll need to dig out my diaries/notebooks to see if I made an entry in any of them - that could take quite a while, with no guarantee that I did record anything specific.

Apologies, I missed that this was pictured at the number 2 end.

For 47236, it was still in the old distribution livery the year before. Not beyond the realms of possibility this picture was taken the the period between repainting and naming.
