Class 47 photos

I'm still trying solve the mystery of this picture I took 50 years ago!

Because the original negative was overexposed I was not able to print it satisfactorily at the time, so didn't bother to keep a proper record of the subject. But digital scanning works wonders and I have a quite presentable picture now. The trouble is, I have no date or even a note of the loco numbers.

It was taken at Low Fell, Gateshead, where I did my early 'spotting' and photography. Going by the negative I know it was taken with a camera I was using between 1967 and 1969. The train is heading north and is obviously the 'Anglo-Scottish Car Carrier' (whether that name was still in use at the time, I'm not sure.) Both the Type 2 leading and the Brush Type 4 (which has presumably failed) are in original green livery.

Any ideas what the locos are, and the date, anyone?

Needless to say it is the only photo I ever took of a diesel brake tender with XP headlamps!

Taken at Low Fell, probably 1967/8

Thanks in advance!

The Class 47 has a SYP and Serck grills rather than three fixed grills, which was not that common... not that it really helps.

A blast from the past. Harrowden Junction looks a great deal different today. Some years ago and at astronomical cost the relief line was extended to Kettering South Junction and now, at an even greater cost, the line is being doubled to restore it to a four track section as it had been for a hundred years. Cost savings???

More common than you think as many Class 47s were fitted with air brakes from new and many of those had the later style grille arrangement. It is also from what I can make out an all-parallel locomotive rather than one of the earlier series parallel machines.

Lovely, lovely shot Geoff! Trying to place it - just south of Wellingborough I think with the train heading north on the Down Fast, the stop block being the neck of the sidings on the up side where the Morris Engines factory used to be...?

Some of mine - not brilliant, but it's the record that counts...

Except it is not 47512, because as D1958 it appeared in standard BR livery on being renumbered. As far as I know there were only two of the class renumbered and still keeping their four BR arrow symbols under the cab windows. They were D1956 and D1960, becoming 47260 and 47514 respectively.

I believe the loco here is 47514.

It is indeed 47514. In my notes I don't have the last digit recorded so I cannot account for why I described it as 47512. The number can be clearly read off the original when enlarged. Thank you for pointing it out.

Thank you Rugd 1022. Yes it is just about to pass under the Irthlingborough Road bridge.

Interesting shot off 47712 at Tonbridge as it still carries the 100mph authorisation plate on the drivers door permitting this higher speed when working the Push Pulls on the Glasgow Edinburgh mainline.

In have never seen reliveried locos away from the 100mph lines in Scotland that still retained this plate.

Its also something thats usually overlooked by modellers when detailing 47/7s.

I spent lot of time behind these locos in their last months on these duties and 100 mph was almost guaranteed every trip.

When the new 156 replacements were introduced after much hype the schedule was eased from 43 mins to 50!

Even the 27s that preceded the 47/7s were originally timed on the fastest trains at 39 mins to Haymark.et and 43 to Waverley.

These were actually more exciting with noisy non air con mk 2s and locos flat out from the start with speed well into the 90s every trip..no wonder the failure rate was high.

Both these and the 47/7s were too good to last unfortunately.

Pic of 'Waverley' on such a duty the significance of which is a limited edition Bachmann model which goes on sale at the Glasgow show in Feb.

Re post 718 from Mezzoman which includes this excellent shot of 47712 at Tonbridge.

post-2371-0-39449800-1514671216.jpg

I commented regarding it unusual to see it still retained the max speed exemption plate pin the drivers door allowing 100mph on the Glasgow - Edinburgh main line.

Bit blurred but easily read.

post-2371-0-32015800-1514671125_thumb.jpg

I doubt if the forthcoming Bachmann releases of 47/7s in Scotrail livery will include this detail but its easily rectified.

Hope this is of some interest.

Dave.
