Good afternoon, David. That’s a great selection of Carlisle photo’s from the early 1990’s. The first photo’ of 86406, on a Carlisle to Euston service, on the 18th February, 1990, is expertly composed, and the locomotive looks good in the weak February sun.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Hope Dave doesn't mind, a crude enlargement:

I was going to say Gresley RB but only because I forgot about the Thompsons and am not sure of the differences between them.

Definitely not BR Mk1 though.

Great pictures David

Is that a Thompson buffet in the first one?

I am not sure but it may be the Harwich Parkeseton Quay to Manchetser/Liverpool working.

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of the Tramway Museum at Crich. What a delightful locomotive in C12047, of the Blackpool Engineering Department, as at the 11th June, 1989.

The ECML photo’s from the south and north of Grantham show much of interest. That buffet car in the first photo’ certainly is a Thompson car. Not only the roof ends are different from a Gresley corridor coach by not being domed, as already mentioned, but the underframe equipment is different too. Plus there is no beading visible on the body sides.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Once again, regarding J2769 (the first modern traction image):  the loco is a class 40, rather than a class 47 and (as previously queried) the buffet car is either E1705E or E1706E - the two Thompson vehicles.

Given the date (1971), the loco and the catering vehicle, I would suggest that this is the down "Highwayman".

Thanks very much for this.

I had forgotten all about The HIghwayman, I am sure you are correct.

I agree with you about  the loco being a Class 40 not a Class 47.  When I posted the photo I did wonder, but just captioned it according to my notes which were wrong again.

Good evening, David. That’s an excellent selection of photo’s of Berwick upon Tweed. The first photo’ of a class 37 on a down freight train in August, 1980, shows a great view of the magnificent viaduct.

With warmest regards,

Good evening, David. I’m having some issues with this site this evening. Now, the photo’s you’ve posted of the Midland Railway in the Peak District are of great interest, and what a classic view of an ‘English Steam Train’ in JVol6143, at Cromford, with a Stanier class  5, 44815, on an up passenger train from Buxton to Derby, in June, 1952.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s from Ulgham Lane crossing on the ECML. The last photo’ of 56115 and 56114 on an up coal train from Butterwell, on the 19th February, 1991, shows a good plume of exhaust from 56115, which seems to be hauling 56114 as well as the wagons. I’m guessing 56114 was in trouble.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

From memory I think so but I didn't make a note at the time.

Good evening, David. That’s an excellent selection of photo’s from the Durham Coast line going south towards Hartlepool. In J13774, at East Boldon, with 142019, on a Metro Centre to Sunderland service in April, 1993, you have a great end view of the signal box. Just right     for modelling.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a most splendid selection of photo’s of the former North British Railway line from Scotsgap Junction to Rothbury. Sad seeing that all really remains of it are the earthworks and some bridges and a viaduct. The last photo’ of Brinkburn, from May, 1981, is stark, with only a platform face left and no station buildings surviving.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.
