I'm surprised this show hasn't been mentioned yet, unless I've missed it?

http://gcrailway.co.uk/modelevent/

We're taking both Deepcar and Netherwood Sidings, which could be 'interesting' as they share the same operating team!

Looking through the list of layouts and the fact that there is an all day travel ticket in the price looks very good value to me.

Only downside from our viewpoint is that we might not have time to look around the other sites and exhibits, still there's 3 days to try

Hi all - I work for a mainline heritage railway in Leicestershire - Great Central - and we are holding our first model railway and engineering event 20-22 June this year.  We are hoping for a really successful event and would really like advice and help on getting as much of a buzz about this event as possible.  I work for the railway, but don't have much knowledge on model events and would really like help and advice to get the event out there!

Information I have got from the GCR website is:

Our first ever, 8 mile long, model railway expo – it promises to be a totally different experience in the model railway & engineering world! The event will be spread over GCR’s four stations, with each station specialising in a different area of the hobby - A selection of more than 50 layouts will be on display including Ackthorpe, Cascade Yard, Glen Gillie, Kings Wear, Leicester South, Museum of Transport, Overlord 11, St Marnock E Shed, Tanyblwch and The Charnwood Forest Branch. Visitors and exhibitors will be able to travel behind full size steam locomotives to examine their miniature counterparts! - Each of the GCRs stations will have model layouts on display – Quorn & Woodhouse station being the main exhibition hall with a 35,000 sq ft marquee - Famous real life locations like Bodmin, Tan-y-bwlch and Deepcar will be brought to life in miniature. Established Leicestershire teams like the Soar Valley Model Railway club will also bring out their latest projects to delight.

Help and advice on how to get excitement about this event bubbling along would be much appreciated.

Thanks :)

What a great idea. What a shame you have delayed announcing it to so late and giving what is VERY short notice for the potential visitors.

Getting time off work to go and booking hotels even at this late stage is going to be much more difficult. I would like to go but just am not sure I will be able to.

An event of this size needs to be announced a good 6 months ahead of time.

You have listed a few of the 50+ layouts - could we have a complete list? And will there be any traders attending (another list)?

  • 2 weeks later...

As a GC member I wish them well for this event and hope it is a great success. I should be visiting over the weekend and may be helping out on one of the layouts. Just one word on the organisation of this event however. This was announced months ago through the G.C's own website and magazines. I actually contacted the organisers to offer my help as I had some experience of organising a show and thought I could provide some assistance. After an email of thanks was received and a promise to "be in touch" I have heard nothing since. And people moan they don't get enough volunteers!!

Still I don't want to be accused of sour grapes. Good luck to all with this event!

'Just finished preparing RHYDWYN FAWR STEEL ready for next w/e's show - In addition to our viewing stools for 'short people' and those who are either disabled or infirm, we now have a periscope available for those people in wheelchairs who would like a better view of the upper level - If you actually fall into this last category or are accompanying someone who does, then please feel free to ask one of our operators if you would like to use it.

Just a shame my little girl is not coming to the G.C show this year. She saw the above layout at DEMU last year and loved it, I could not drag her away as she was so taken with the light and sound effects. Whenever she sees pictures of the layout on my phone or in magazines she still remembers it, describing it as "hot, hot!"

You're very kind with your comments Andy, and yes, its a shame your daughter isn't coming - However, if you are passing our layout, please do make yourself known, as we would be only too happy to give you a 'guided tour'!

I will come over and say hi if I get the chance as I could be helping to operate Glen Gillie. May bring camera over for some new pics for the little one.

Hi All

Everything ready for the show, just one thing to point out to operators etc, apparently the NCP car park which we have been told to use if in Travel Lodge has a height restriction barrier of 6'10" and according to NCP they will not accept Transit vans etc. There is no street parking, all double yellows and also no proper breakfast at Travel Lodge just their breakfast bag.

I've been over at Quorn for a look round the event and I must say it's much, much better than I was expecting. I didn't get chance to visit any other locations but there's a great selection of layouts across the two marquees at Quorn. The floor surface is better than I'd have expected and it's well planned out with plenty of walkway space and a good selection of layouts for which the GCR and the Soar Valley MRC deserve due praise.

There was a healthy crowd for a Friday and no doubt the attraction of riding the line helps too as well as moving people around.

There's a large (and dry!) field next to Quorn station for parking and judging by the number of cars still there later in the day that visitors are making a good day of it.

There's even some friendly traders!

I can heartily recommend a visit if you can this weekend, make sure you keep the fluids topped up as it's been a bit warm inside but at least the layouts are well protected from the elements!

10/10 for the style of the event.

Really great show today, would definitely recommend to anyone free this weekend. Got to meet Andy Y on the BRM stall, although strangely enough he was sure we'd met before! Oh and Andy, I've had a Google and I think I know now what you and Richard were hinting at!

I went to the show today and would have to agree that it was a great event. The organisers deserve a pat on the back for setting up such a great venue in Quorn car park. The marquees were surperb and were well set out with spacious ailses to walk down. There were lots of high quality layouts and with the opportunity to ride on the trains between exhibits added to the event. I hear it is being repeated next year and deservedly so.

However! I hope they learn a few lessons!

The cost of an adult ticket at £15 sounds expensive. As it includes a "Day Rover" ticket on the railway as well as the exhibition it is actually good value. But the car park was an additional £5.00 on top of that. Paying this for the event car park at Quorn is nothing new, you pay this at a gala event. On such occasions the car park cost is deducted from the ticket. Not today it seemed. My wife and inlaws were charged the car park cost on top of the day ticket. I have checked all the adverts for the show and NO WHERE does it state that there is an additional cost for parking! I hear that the car park volunteer was extremely rude to them when they queried the charge.

On the same subject I was there operating one of the exhibits yet I was also charged the amount despite telling the same gentleman the name of the layout and owner I was with. Incidently I aslo carried my G.C workers pass which should allow me onto all sites free of charge. The same gentleman was equally rude to myself.

I hope that he was not like this to other visitors who may have left with a bad impression of the railway despite the excellent show!
