which should be hourly,

But it isn't, it's two-hourly during the day (I looked last time I was going there and decided against rail travel simply because of that) and no matter how aesthetically pleasing Darlington is it's of little interest to someone who needs to be in Shildon; paying for an overpriced coffee doesn't help either.

Therefore your 'rubbish' comment is somewhat inappropriate.

for the purposes of maintaining the embargo im not expecting anybody to agree or disagree but if i were a betting man.....id say it could be E5001 (DJM maintaining his own silence on such a model for the time being so soon after announcing his Class 71/74) tying in with the earlier Golden Arrow reference.....

thats one off the 20 or so strongest possibles in the collection

19 guesses remaining.....

I hate to disagree with you Andy, but.........

It is one thing getting grumpy from having to wait ages for a connection on a journey when you want to be elsewhere and you have misread the timetable or it is a poor one for your journey. It is quite another appreciating the history and railway architecture of a place like Darlington. After all, it was the birthplace of railways, the home of Darlington works and it has (or had - it is ages since I was there) a lot of historical railway interest plus some (boring to me but I know others like it) modern interest too.

If somebody gets stuck there when they want to be elsewhere, they are going to struggle to appreciate their surroundings but to dismiss a couple of hours at Darlington as boring is very harsh indeed. So I thought the "rubbish" comment was quite justified. There is (or was - it may all have gone now) much of railway interest to enjoy there.

There is, and I've enjoyed it at a time when I haven't had to be somewhere else. ;)

Oh gawd, all this talk of arrows reminded me of this pop classic….:-(

Now I can't get the bloomin' tune out of my head.  It's taken me over 40 years to forget it….

No, no, no, no, no.... just no!

Mrs Y watched some awful TV program about OAPs misbehaving in the Med and he was on the programme as a viagra-gobbling has-been trying to tup everything in sight.

You might think that, but me and another dont.

My point was that to say two hours there is boring was harsh. Even when you miss the train there are things to look at, notice and walk around to see and check. Its not just about engines, its engineering, buildings, track layout, legacy issues like remodelling. Looking for areas that have once seen use on the railway and how the facility itself has been altered for the MDTR. Then compare that with the places your used to going to, and see often. Against operations today and those a number of years ago.

Even when youve done that you can get a drink and sit back and relax. You can occupy yourself, or wait patiently. Even if you need to be in Shildon its you that missed the train. The train didnt miss you.

You can do this anywhere you miss the train, some are better than others, but theres many places worse than Darlington to be stuck for ages. To say that to have such a difference of opinion is 'inapproriate' is baffeling on a discussion forum.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.... not long to go now...

It was the tone which I felt was inappropriate. Also that you tried to make an incorrect claim over service frequency. I have nothing against Darlington station but you don't want to be sat there when you need to be somewhere else, simples.

i think the point was more about being aware of the potential 1.5-2 hour fester at Darlington that was unplanned and could also eat into your available time spent up at Shildon. If it was me and i had time to kill like that think id go off the station and look for a nice greasy spoon.....

There is an enormous difference between sitting on a station waiting for a train when you are having a nice day out gricing etc, and doing the same thing when you are being paid to get a job done at the destination. I'm sure Darlington is steeped in history, but that loses much of its lustre when you have a deadline to meet.

Regardless of the merits of Darlington or otherwise, a two hourly service to Shildon is a bit naff.  Even Fairbourne (popn. approx. 700) has a two hourly service, mostly all the way to Birmingham (when it doesn't get caped at Wolverhampton because of delays).

Actually, that means I have a far better train service to Birmingham than Dudley (popn. nearly 80,000, has no station in the town, Dudley Port is in Tipton and not even in Dudley Borough).

I don't think I'm breaking any embargos by telling you that it's all new, and not at all APT-E like..........................

I think you will find Darlington is at the other end of the universe.... Can we please get back on the topic of not talking about Tuesday's announcement.... Using the probibility drive I can tell you it's neither a whale or a bowl of petunias!

Oh , I was looking at the wrong side of the page! :O  :sungum:

Maybe the biggest question is-

Have MR subscribers got any sort of advantage to ordering this new model?

The answer is of course no they havent so all the indignation is a little misplaced really, everyone has an equal chance of ordering their model but I wouldnt wait too long once the books are open because these are going to fly out the door, hell I dont really like steam that much but even I will be (trying to) order one when the chance arises.

I bet it'll be the Rainhill Trials "Cycloped" complete with animatronic horse.

There will be a new DCC option where instead of a whistle or horn, you'll have the option of whinnying, and random farts from the horses behind.

I'd pay proper money for one of those.
