Some progress has been made on the masonry viaduct.

Firstly, the drawings of the inner and outer faces of the viaduct were tweaked to accommodate two layers of (mounting) board so that pier corner recesses or rebates would form to enable the inner pier walls to be glued to the outer faces.  The mounting board card was chosen because it flexes nicely round the curved structure without buckling or creasing. These are the resulting drawings.

These were again printed full size but twice, one for the inner layer and one for the outer layer of each side.  Each sheet consisted of three sheets of A4 aligned together.  They are glued to the mounting board with spray mount adhesive.  I left them for 24 hours before cutting them to shape.  The curved arches were of course the trickiest to cut.  Here are the completed inner...

...and outer layers.

The inner layer was then glued to the viaduct "skeleton" with pva wood glue thus.

The outer layer was then carefully glued with pva and positioned over the inner layer thus.

This created the rebated edge of the pier...

...that I was looking for.

The other laminated side of the viaduct was similarly glued in place.

A more normal view of the progress so far back in the shed.

post-1115-0-02926700-1470501473_thumb.jpg

Hopefully I will make more progress in the next few days.  The inner faces of the piers and the arch soffits all need adding before I can over coat the entire structure with Scalescenes ashlar texture.

Regards,

Brian.

  • 2 weeks later...

The last week has been almost totally given over to decorating one of our bedrooms, now thankfully completed.  So yesterday I managed a few hours on the viaduct, cutting out and pasting the Scalescenes texture sheets to the existing viaduct sides and making the card inner walls of the piers.  I also fabbed up one of the arch barrel soffits but I was far from happy with the result so back to the drawing board on that one!  Anyway, here are some pictures showing what I've done thus far.

Still lots to do.

Looking good Brian, I love the view through the viaduct to the houses.

Tom

Funnily enough Tom, that shot was purely accidental - the house backs have been temporarily "parked" there until I decide what to do with them.  But, I agree with you, the shot looks quite atmospheric, shades of (City of) Durham.  I just need to think about how best to make this area complete.

Brian.

Work continues on the viaduct - two arch barrells/soffits and adjoining pier walls have been added as have one of the end piers - see below.

Coping stones and other details have yet to be added obviously.

I'm really now keen on the idea of threading a road through the first span thus.

post-1115-0-61608500-1471793300_thumb.jpg

But I might have to rejig the branch line viaduct somewhat.

post-1115-0-51975900-1471793380_thumb.jpg

The other side of the main line viaduct is of course nowhere near as advanced as the side closest to the camera and, whilst it is tempting to leave it unfinished, I WILL KNOW :-)

Brian.

Excellent work Brian, and remember, if there's room for a camera behind, your bound to want a pic from that side one day.

Thanks again, Andy.  There's not a lot of room behind the viaduct but I will complete the "blind" side.

Excellent work. I'm going to have to up my game

Thanks for your kind comments, Duncan.

Regards,

Brian.

  • 4 weeks later...

Not a lot has happened in the last few weeks because I have been away with Mrs D.  Back now though so work will recommence.

Following a nice hour or two at the Shenfield (Mid Essex Model Railway Club) show this morning, I thought I would run some diesels this afternoon.

Firstly a Sulzer type 2 on a parcels departure.

post-1115-0-90218900-1474131484_thumb.jpg

Then, an English Electric Type 3 headed main line express arrives.

Finally, the Metro-Cammel dmu departs on a coastal service.

Excellent pics Brian, ballasting is looking superb.

Very nice Brian, I like the picture of the station buffers in particular - the church and the backscene look great.

Tom

Thank you gents for your kind words.

Best Regards,

Brian.

More "dieselry" this afternoon.

In a crowded station, the EE Type 3 has been added to the front of the coal hoppers along with the diesel brake tender and awaits departure...

...and finally gets away.

post-1115-0-24734300-1474214215_thumb.jpg

Earlier, another Sulzer type 2 arrived on a local passenger train.

That's all for now.

Love the green break tender with the EE type 3 on the mineral wagons did you scratch build it mate .

I'm afraid not - my scratch building is limited to the buildings on the layout, heavily assisted by Scalescenes textures. The brake tender is a Dapol item produced for Model Rail magazine.

Thanks for your interest.

Brian.

  • 2 weeks later...

Work on the viaduct continues and I'm hoping to get it completed this week.  In the meantime, and to have a break from "viaduct veneering", I have added a small section of road and pavement(s) between the station throat overbridge and the backscene.

You may remember the bridge looked like this...

post-1115-0-20973800-1474984336_thumb.jpg

...and now it looks like this.

post-1115-0-98225100-1474984385_thumb.jpg

I have replaced the house backs for photo comparison purposes only - I plan to build a pub to sit where the house backs are once the correct retaining wall has been built, the blue brick wall is temporary.

There is also now a space next to Brown's stores crying out to be filled with something (a war memorial, a planter or something) - see below.

post-1115-0-08680600-1474984637_thumb.jpg

I really must now concentrate on finishing the viaduct which is really on the critical path to eventually seeing trains run properly on the layout i.e. too and from the fiddle yard.

Regards,

Brian.

Oh well, the viaduct has taken a back seat again.  You may recall that I said that the space next to Brown's Stores was crying out for a war memorial or something, well...

post-1115-0-74956100-1475151170_thumb.jpg

..this Dapol version seems to fit the bill.

You may also recall that I acquired a RailRoad D49 recently thus.

post-1115-0-65452200-1475151345_thumb.jpg

I was going to repaint it black BR mixed traffic.  However, browsing a well known auction site I could not resist these two items.

post-1115-0-75332400-1475151450_thumb.jpg

The appropriate body parts were duly swapped over thus.

post-1115-0-46406800-1475151505_thumb.jpg

The wheels obviously need painting black and further detailing and possibly renumber/naming needs to be done.  In the meantime I need to dispose of the green stuff :jester:

That's all for now.

Nice although I prefer the LNER  :senile:  :)

The memorial seems to fit the location, not to large to over power.  Another idea would be a little market?

Thanks for the comments.  My modelling reflects my boyhood spotting days, BR steam/diesel transition 1950s/1960s so the LNER green had to go although I do agree it looks handsome.  The memorial isn't stuck down and will do for now.

Thanks again.

Brian.

like the war memorial mite want to add a few benches around them but they are good detail mate.

I like the BR black on the kettle better pal

Thanks mate.  The D49 will defo need renumber/renaming. 62750 didn't have this type of tender in BR days.  I will probably plump for 62765 "The Goathland" - I have a nice picture in the appropriate Yeadon book showing the loco in early BR days with I think the group standard tender that I have just fitted.

Regards,

Brian.

I've done a bit more work on the viaduct today so I thought I would post some pictures of progress.  Firstly, the "inner" elevation is I think now complete - see below (pictured on my dining room table work bench).

post-1115-0-75548700-1475421952_thumb.jpg

By far the most time consuming element of construction has been the five arch soffits or barrells and these are now finished.  They are fabricated from mounting board card curved after scoring at 5 mm parallel centres with the Scalescenes ashlar paper added when curved (not flat) to avoid wrinkles.  They were also cut over size and offered up for marking and trimming - see below the finished barrells.

post-1115-0-41418700-1475422313_thumb.jpg

The status of the "outer" elevation is as shown below.

post-1115-0-74598600-1475422288_thumb.jpg

Obviously nowhere near finished but now the barrells are done, it should not take too long to complete.

Regards,

Brian.
