An introduction to an all new and Big Project! Building a G Scale Garden Railway! :sungum: This has been something I have always wanted to do for many years and when an LGB G Scale Starter Set came along for the right price, I could not miss the opportunity.

In this video I discuss why G Scale, plus the overall design and plans for the project. Garden Railways is something I have never dabbled with before, so hope to learn lots of new things along the way. :locomotive:
Hope you enjoy!

This sounds good. I am currently typing this about a mile from what was Blagdon Station.

Wow! Where's about in the world are you then? I live not far from Chew, but work in on of the pubs in Bladgon  :jester:

Which pub do you work at? I'm just down the road from the New Inn in Blagdon. I could probably get some photos if you want any?

A few images of the LGB Starter Set, which has kick started this project. Though this is part of the LGB Toy Train Range, I was amazed by the quality of the set and stock! And at under £120 Brand New, it was an utter steal!  :locomotive: I also purchased a LGB Tanker Wagon too for under £14 too! Can't wait to get them out in the garden... :sungum:

A few pictures of the plans of the line and where it will be located. The track plan is a oval, which will start with a passing loop, by the path. It will then enter a small cutting that will take it onto the Bridge that will cross the pond. On the other side, due to flower bed being lower, a curved embankment will be installed. The line will then curve around in front of the pond, on a gradual incline and join back on at the passing loop (Hope that makes sense).

Well that's the plan anyway...  :jester:  Shall be interesting to see how it goes once I get started... :sungum:

  • 2 weeks later...

The first of the track work has arrived for Garden Railway project, kindly ordered in by my local model shop, Signals Models.

This includes the Piko Station Track Pack (a standard passing loop and extra straight sections), plus a Piko 1200mm straight, which will be use on the plan bridge over the pond. The Peco flex sections are still to arrive in store as of yet, plus I'm sure a number of other section will be need to complete the full circuit around the pond.

The first thing to do is to create the bridge once that is complete, we can start planning the high, level and route of the track, remove/relocating plants and creating the embankments/cuttings in the appropriate places.

Got a few new items of rolling stock too, so will post a few images when I get around to it.

Well it has started. Working out the route of the track and getting the all important measurements of the bridge worked out. Everything is based around it, including embankment, cutting and curve radius. The track is just being used at a template at the moment and he plank will look a lot more bridge like soon. :jester:

Well lots of progress has been made over the past few weeks, so much so I have a back log of photos and videos updates! I hope to get the 2nd update on the project up sometime in the next 2 weeks. In the meantime I though I would share a few pictures of what the bridge/plank seen in previous photos I've posted looks like now...
My Granddad is a wise with woodwork and said he wanted to build the bridge for me, which was very kind of him indeed. As can be seen when he said he was going to build a bridge, he meant it... :jester:

More work has been carried out in the garden, the bridge is now in place and work has started on building the embankment. Plus more of the track work has arrived. More progress to come soon! :sungum:

Your Granddad is obviously a legend. Reminds me of my Granddad who was always fixing things for me or helping me build things.

This is a great thread. Thanks for sharing the photos.

He sure is indeed! It was his idea for a bridge in the first place. :jester: So glad he suggested it! Got lot more picture updates to come on the project and video updates too (though I have a back long of those). Glad you like it so far! :locomotive:

Well today marks a huge landmark in the construction of the Garden Railway! The first service on the railway! :locomotive:  Though it was only back and forth on a few meters of laid track it was something!

This was then followed by lots of digging... Here a few images to prove I have been doing a bit of hard graphed. :jester:

The much over due 2nd video update on the project will be coming very soon, swiftly followed by the 3rd.

Hope you like the pics!  :locomotive:

Hi Callum - I've seen that starter set on sale as well. Is it any good? I felt the loco looked a bit plasticky, although I guess I could repaint it. How does it feel when using it?

Hi mate. I feel it is superb value for what it is. Runs a dream too! How much have you found it for? This one was £119.99. I'm very tempted to get another one to do a bit of repainting. As it is so much cheaper than buying separate rolling stock. Though if it is of help. I have a full video review of the set on the way, hopefully it should be online in the next week or so. :mail:  Hope was of help. :locomotive:

A much overdue 2nd Video Update on the G Scale Garden Railway Project. In this update, work has started on positioning the soon to be Bridge over the pond. The Bridge is the key codependent of the railway and once in position, will proved route and level for the rest of the line. As well as the Bridge, work has also started on clearing the flowerbeds ready for the embankments and cuttings.
More updates will follow soon... :locomotive:
Hope you enjoy!

Considering everything that has happened this isn't really much of an update. Can't wait for more updates though.

Yes, indeed mate. :jester:  The videos are far behind what has really happened. Many people who watch the YouTube Channel, don't have RMweb or the SDJR7F88 facebook page. So they are far behind on what has changed. Thought I have 2 more video updates pre-recorded and they seem much more up to date than this one...  :jester:

I've seen it for that price on eBay. I will have a think. Look forward to seeing your review.

A review of the LGB 90470 ToyTrain G Scale Starter Set. This Starter Set is perfect for anyone starting in G Scale or wishing to start constructing a Garden Railway. The ToyTrain Brand is LGB equivalent to Hornby's RailRoad Range, proving reasonably detailed and robust locos and stock, for value for money. Perfect for Young Modellers or anyone on a budget.
The Set contains very thing you need to get started, including; Loco, Wagons, Circle of Track, Power Supply and Controller, plus some accessories too. Simply set up the track, plug it in and your ready to go! The loco proved is a smooth and powerful runner, featuring a good amount of detail and a working headlight.
All in all this set is superb value for money and the perfect starter for anyone wishing to getting into Garden Railways. 10/10 does not do it justice!

As you guys and girls know my video updates I have been posting are far behind the current stage of which the is at railway. With lots of work been carried out over the past 2 weeks, and even the first test run on a couple of meters of track.
Anyway, here's a few pictures of some progress from the about 2 weeks ago, showing the suspension bridge being put into position and the construction of the embankment between the two bridges. All these steps should be covered in the next video update, hopefully going live later this week :locomotive:

Been meaning to post these pictures for a while know, but a few items of rolling stock have arrived for the Garden Railway. These wagons where very cheap, and do have a few issues, mainly on the bogie wagons, but I hope to get those problems sorted before they hit the rails. :sungum:
Of course if you would like to see reviews of these please let me know :locomotive:
