The Blagdon & Butcombe Light Railway (B&BLR)

The 3rd Video Update on the G Scale Garden Railway Project. In this update, the now complete bridge is in positioning over the pond, hard to believe it is the same plank as seen in the last update! Not only that there is now a second bridge, which spans the flowerbeds, as an embankment would of been too high for the area. As well as the new bridges, work has started on creating the embankment on the curve between the two, using re-claimed rocks from the garden. It's certainly starting to look the part!
More work and updates to come soon! :locomotive:
Hope you enjoy!

Can I make one suggestion - maybe have a shorter intro slide. 25 seconds is a bit long.

Thanks for the suggestion. Did that included the title i.e Garden railway Update? As the normal 7F into is only 15 seconds

I'd ditch intros too, if I were you. We've become very impatient, I know that if I get one of those un -skippable ads on YouTube I just don't bother to watch whatever it was rather than sit through 30 seconds of advert.

If you must have an intro, no more than 5 seconds to splash the title on the screen - if it takes longer than that to read, find a better title ;)

It was only a suggestion to bring people more quickly into the video if they found it on YouTube. In work, we've pretty much dispensed with intros altogether.

Obviously I watched it :)

Hi Guys, sorry you don't like the info format, but it's something I have always done and feel it will be silly to change it now. Totally agree about the adverts. I could earn a fair bit of money from added them, but chose not too over people enjoyment of the videos. Sorry if it sound a bit harsh, but I honestly don't mean any harm. I always find it hard to type/write things :mail:  :sungum:

The second layer of the track bed is now going down, on top of the base layer of hard core. These large chippings will be cover with more to scale ballast at a later date. As well as the track bed, I have started trying out a bit of track work... Knew I would get a bit carried away with this project... :jester: Just found enough space to create a pond side siding. :locomotive: Could create an interesting dockside scene...

I didn't mean to cause any offence about the intro. I guess I'm just impatient to get to the action when I watch a video.

I like the idea of a dockside siding. Next stop, boats!

No worries mate. I know what you mean. Yes, well you never know, would be interesting to see what one or two would look like on the pond :jester:

The 4th Update on the G Scale Garden Railway Project, and again lots has changed. Track laying has commenced, with the sections across the two bridges and embankments between them now in place. This also includes the second layer of the track bed, course chippings, ready for the scale ballast to be added on top.
As well as the track, the rest of the embankment around the front of the pond has now been constructed, along with the cutting where the passing loop will be located. I'm very pleased with how it has turned out, using many of the rocks from the garden to make it as natural looks as possible.
With most of the digging and building now complete, it is just the mater of finishing of the track beds ready for the track to arrive.
Hope you enjoy!

  • 2 weeks later...

Been very, very busy on the railway lately. The full circuit is now complete, along with the passing loop. The point work has also been added for the future pond side siding. On top of that ballasting is well under way, with well over 75% being now complete! Really is starting to look the part I feel. Not long until some testing can commence :locomotive:

Please tell me what you think...

Well with all the amazing weather this we a test run was in order. A video will follow up in the next week or so.  :locomotive:

In the mean time I decided to have a bit of fun with some photo editing :jester: . Hope to do pictures like this when I get it fully operational, weather permitting of course...  :sungum:

Thanks mate! Just basic Adobe Photoshop Elements 9. Got a few more pics like this planned, featuring one of the new additions to the B&BLR Fleet  ;)

Had a bit of fun testing the layout today, and for the first time had two trains on the track. BUT... I have discovered a very BIG issue with the passing loop. It does not Isolate!
The passing loop is a Piko Station Track pack. Does the LGB version of the Pack Isolate?
As you can guess this is a really annoying problem for me, as this means I won't be able have two trains on the track (one held in the loop). I guess this also means the Piko point work I have bought for the siding won't hold an engine too.
Any info or help on how I can sort this would be very great full...

You could DCC chip your locos and then the non-isolating nature won't be an issue.

That does look like an insulated point. Can you remember what it looks like underneath? Does the metal run all the way through somehow.

Yes, metal does run all the way through. Thought I thought being a passing loop set and most G Scale set being Analog I though this would not be an issue. Seems I was very wrong. Don't want to go DCC on this project, as one it will be very expensive to do so, plus some G scale models I have talked to say it creates more problems in a garden environment.

Looking good :) Those Nequida wagons can be repainted easily but wash them well as they are often covered in mould release and use some very fine abrasive first. I used the finest grade foam sanding blocks from b&q and the sprayed them with Halfords primer and plastikote paints and it stuck well. Look up Swift Sixteen too for some nice cheap and characterful UK wagons, cast in resin and available for 45mm. Simple to assemble with superglue but you will need to figure out attaching the Lgb loop couplers.

You can do dcc cheaply by just adding a booster to an existing system if you have one. You do need to keep the track clean and have good feeds but it works well and loads use dcc outside ;) To be honest if you are just getting into it is worth having a look at the rapidly improving RC options by the likes of Deltang, Brian Jones, Cliff Barker or Tony Walsham as you can fit it in the small Lgb locos with a bit of creativity and get 2-4hrs constant running between charges. Nothing wrong with dc but plenty of alternatives. Also mylocosound offer sound units that are getting pretty good and almost as good as the dcc chips.

Yes there's been live steam in 009 and OO but it's pretty common on 45mm with Roundhouse, Accucraft and several other smaller concerns supplying UK prototypes and freelance models.

Thanks for all the info on the stock and how to operate the layout.  :mail:  All info is very handy to being so new to the hobby. Think it will be staying DC for the moment, but you never know, that might change. As for the wagons they are a good base for a repaint and have been thinking about doing so. :locomotive: Again will have to see on that front, maybe the B&BLR might get it's own colour system...  :jester:

Can you get actual live steam locos for that size? That'd be cool :)

Yes you can. Lets just say I have an a Grand Opening Gala planned for the line, with guests planned to join the hope fleet locos. One just might be live steam! :locomotive:
