tramcard
As a child in the 1950s I regularly visited my Grandfather who live in Chopwell. Twice a day coal trains left full and returned empty. Sadly no one seems to have taken any photos of the locos, or the pit which was still working. I remember being fascinated by the lack of an external coal bunker. A regular walk was along the track to Chopwell woods, and we just stood back from the track as the train passed. Out of interest we lived down south so a visit up north involved SR assorted steam and usually an A3 or A4 to Newcastle. Only remember Dominion of Canada because of the bell!

RMweb Premium Barry O Posted December 9, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 9, 2021 A couple of quick questions as I may be fitting sound to one of these: 1 does it sound like an everyday 2 cylinder loco? 2 Is it a whistle or do some of these have a "hooter"? Thanks! Baz

RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted December 11, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 11, 2021 It's definitely a whistle on most of them but only a small bell. I can't see any reason why they should much different compared with any other inside cylinder/Stephenson gear loco.
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted December 11, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 11, 2021 the one at Tanfield sounded great.. not sure but it sounds like a "peep" type of whistle rather than a loud, deep one. Baz
Eccles90
I passed my firing exam on that loco and used to be a regular driver, the boiler pressure is quite low at 120-140psi, so the chuffs were always quite subtle, I think the chimney was designed in a way to reduce the blast on the fire so this also reduced the chuff factor. Not sure if this helps, also if you are patient it may be in the overhaul queue in about 5 years time...
