Appleton Yard - Painting modelu drivers...

Hi,

I thought I'd start a new topic for this recycled layout. This was originally ' run round sidings', which then lost focus and was used as a fiddle yard for another layout.

I was going to bin it, but I thought it was worthy of some care and to turn it into something useful.

The concept is fairly simple, and is based on didcot in 1996-2000 era. We will have MOD traffic, civil engineers traffic, and maybe some enterprise and MGRs running around.

The motivation came from the desire to run my Hornby class 60 and the nice new class 37s I had on order from Bachmann !

Layout is 10' x 1 1/2 feet, at present the fiddle yard is yet to be finished as it needs the top board replacing. Scenic will be half of that, unless I extend onto the fiddle board a bit.

Since I started recycling ,

I have

- reinstated rear embankment

- refreshed all hard surfaces with scalescenes paper

- built a modern concrete bridge as a scenic break at far end.

- rejuvenated the canal basin scene

- painted baseboard sides

- installed various scenic items.

- installed back scenes

As progress will be slow and it's a small layout, I'll post updates on rolling stock projects here as well.

Current locos are 60026, 37242, 37174. I expect to go to about 10 locos to get some variety.

Here are some photos showing where I've got to.

Far end, with new modern lights and new road bridge. Layout designed to be able to run through both ends if necessary in future.

This concrete area at back is where low relief army depot will be. The building is a Hornby works office but I thought it was suitable as an MOd building

Half finished portacabin for shunters as per the one at rugby.

Canal basin, not sure if this new technique for water is realistic enough, someone will be upset as local yobs have untied their boat

Perfect motive power for the period 37242 in the beautiful mainline scheme, brand new !

I'm including details I like such as military vehicles, canal boats and if I can squeeze it in a half relief rugby club......it's my ideal world !

Some more work,

This time on VGAs, which are essential for the military traffic.

I had one that wasn't ' factory weathered '. I've removed the ' railfreight ' titles, repainted the ends pale yellow ( from Bachmann Orange ), weathered the sides a bit to get rid of the shine, and ' frame dirted ' the under side.

I've also be slowly gathering a few details to go in the portacabin, can't put the roof on, until the interior looks a bit more lived in.

Also ordered tow new military land rovers to go in the half relief vehicle depot

This weeks modelling time was spent...

Creating a desk for the portacabin

post-450-0-83990200-1442666327.jpg

And further weathering of VGAs or VKA in this case.this is my least favourite one, as the base weathered Colour from Bachmann wasn't great. I'm not sure I've gone bit heavy on this one. We'll see.

It's till hard to find images of these vans circa 96/7/8. You can find as built or recent mainly so I'm going for in between. Dirty but not totally tarnished and rusty as they are today.

Wow, some great modelling there - you have done a superb job on the track weathering and concrete bridge in particular - I look forward to seeing more of this.

p.s. Love the desk in the portacabin as well - it just needs a slightly 'yellowed' 1990s telephone and fax machine to complete the scene!

Cut the outline for the military vehicle store

post-450-0-46226500-1443204637_thumb.jpg

Tried a ' test shot ' of a door panel. The details a bit chunky. These ribs are 2mm painfully cut from styrene sheet. I think I'll have to get thinner, and in strip form as this will test my sanity otherwise

Slow progress, but I finished the portacabin more or less

post-450-0-97115000-1444069825_thumb.jpg

Military vehicle shed is coming on, I'm waiting for a delivery of plastic strip to do the framing on the doors hopefully a bit more subtly than before

On rolling stock, I'm hoping I can make this into 37116 in BR blue with transrail logo.its taking more work than I thought though

Vacant space at the back is going to be an ASDA distribution facility, just like the one you see in all the photos of discotheque stabling point.

I've used plasticard, scored, and then the gaps highlighted by crushed pastel. This will be over a foam board base. One panel done so far.

The military vehicle depot doors continue to take shape. 40 mins a door to get to this. 8 to do !

Continue to buy stock. This 37 cost me a fortune on eBay as they are rare now ( I remember buying two in 2008 for £60 each ! Those were the days ). But this was still in the tissue when it arrived this week. I had to have a Dutch 37, but I don't have the will to mess it up as per EWS, so this will be in early 96 condition, and re numbered ultimately.

That's it for now, hoping to make some more progress on Monday

4 of the eight military vehicle shed doors finished - disaster befell the other 4 as all the plastic rod fell off - that was my fault as I allowed the wood backing to get wet and warp.

post-450-0-15282100-1445779984_thumb.jpg

I've also had issues with the ASDA warehouse as the foam lard warped here as well. I've pretty much straightened it now, it's awaiting new sides and roof. Here it is in ultra low relief mode , behind my new 37 ( desperately needs weathering to match the seacows),

And some new topes behind as well - must be a weekend with all this engineers kit.

Well the ASDA warehouse is finished, except for the ASDA sign, having PC issues at present trying to print that off.

This chap has slipped out the door for a sneaky fag. He's also a spotter hoping to see something interesting in the yard, but alas, just one poor tope.....

post-450-0-03211800-1447269503_thumb.jpeg

Finally he is rewarded as coal sector 37692 appears !

post-450-0-27673600-1447269544_thumb.jpeg

This is a new acquisition , just chipped but runs like a bag of scanners. I'll try another chip I think. Also my brand new 37242 needs to go back as it won't negotiate corners at all.

Not happy with the 37 fleet at present.

Next target is completing the military depot. Then I need to think about the fiddle yard - I'd like to make it semi scenic or raise I've got 5 feet of scenery and five feet of bare board. Seems a waste on a layout this small.
