Rode my scrambler up through penrhis junction in the mid 80s, following the Barry railway up from taffy well then across the track beds to machen.

There is a video on you tube of penrhis junction but I can't post the link .

Judging by the "Arm" with transverse baulks behind 6982, and what then appears to be a 'Tippler' I agree it is bound for Cwmbargoed & Furnace Top and the Dowlais foundry (to collect new ingot moulds).
.
I don't have a WTT for 1972-> but I'm led to believe the reporting number changed with that WTT from 9C84 to 9C83, possibly due to a reduction in Radyr based diagrams ??.
.

That ties in with the photo being dated 1972.

But for the anoraks (like me) here's the WTT info.

And here's one more of Radyr

I remember a very interesting time at Radyr when doing 'freight training', as the Bristol Division of the W.R. deemed that there wasn't sufficient freight in their own area to give us a good grounding. I visited the main signal box on the main line at Radyr, and recall that the Down (?) Distant was a very hard pull.

An evening trip to Llandeilo Jct on a partly-fitted goods train on fireworks night that year was memorable, especially for the attempt to get some kip in the back cab on the way back, with feet up on the window sill, making me almost vertical, albeit in the wrong configuration.

And as for the double-headed MGR trip from Penallta to Aberthaw and back, that was just excellent. I don't think I've driven a Class 37 since.

Edit - or any other diesel on the main line, for that matter.

Yes the Down Distant was No 1 lever it was a heavy pull due to the location and the wire run, I worked Radyr jct and we always had problems with it ,sometimes you would get it to the off position or it would drop to wrong then you would get problems in getting back to on. If it dropped to wrong then you had problems you were unable to peg line clear to Walnut Tree Jct.

Cheers Gareth

Oddly I never had a problem with it.  A bit heavy yes but properly adjusted I don't think I ever got a 'Wrong' on the repeater (and Les Evans wouldn't have let me hear the end of it if I had!).

Les half pull as he was known never pulled it half the time

One thing I can never understand is why they never fitted a motor on it ,the wire run was on the Down Main side all around the fencing on the wier.

Poor old Les no longer with us I worked with him right up until he finished in Cardiff Panel always good for laugh never a dull moment

Cheers Gareth

Last time I saw him was - blimey - 1986 when he came up to RHQ for something or other (possibly an Inquiry?) and came into the Rules & Regs section and immediately saw me, instant mutual recognition 13 years on.  Fairly quick chat alas although we hadn't seen each other since the end of 1973.

And he never used to pull much at all on the latter part of late turns as I would spend the evening in the 'box with him with me working the 'box and him doing the booking (you'll understand the joke in that ;) ) while we bounced Rules & Regs questions off each other for a few hours.
