Good evening, everyone. This evening, with thanks to John Turner, on Flickr, we see English-Electric, Type 4, 40163, at Inward Yard, Hessle, on the 29th September, 1981.

29/09/1981 - Inward Yard, Hessle, Hull.

Best regards,

 Rob.

Interesting horizontal marks on the hoppers. Did they use those on merry go rounds or are they marks from some other automated loading or unloading operation?

At some collieries had series of machines for moving wagons under the loader. These consisted of lorry wheels electrically driven which moved the wagons through the loader. You would see the same marks on MGRs too.

Knew about that for the MGRs, hadn’t consciously  seen it before on that type of hopper. Every day a school day as they say, something extra to note for future weathering.

Good evening, everyone, and it’s interesting to find out about the markings on those hopper wagons.

A bit of a change this evening, for we have a photo’ by Woolwinder, on Flickr, of Beverley, on the 4th May, 1985. It shows a two car class 114 Derby Heavyweight entering the station from Bridlington, at 16.50. Note the treatment of the destination roller blind box. It is somewhat lower than usual, and there is no guttering either side of it. A local variation?

Beverley 4 May 1985

And talking of Beverley station, next week, from Tuesday, the work is scheduled to begin on the station footbridge. Unfortunately it will be rendered roofless, and end up totally changing the appearance of the southern end of the station.

Best regards,

 Rob.

That is E50001/53001 it has always had the lower designation blind. It was built with gutters but these seemed to disappear when it was refurbished.

Good evening, everyone. This evening we have a collection of three photo’s, all by John Turner, on Flickr, and the first one is of recently transferred from Gateshead to Dairycoates, Thompson B1, 61012, Puku, as it pauses at Brough with a Hull bound semi-fast, in about August, 1960.

c.08/1960 - Brough, East Yorkshire.

Next is a photo’ of former North Eastern Railway, 4-wheel, First Open (Officers' Saloon from c1892), E900270E, built York 1869, at Hull Paragon, on the 9th June, 1962.

09/06/1962 - Hull (Paragon), East Yorkshire.

Finally we have a photo’ of mid-1920s former LMS Third Open, TO, later Second Open, SO, of Diag D.1692 or D.1699, in Departmental use as DM38736? and carrying "Black Arrow" lettering, It is pictured at Hull Paragon station, in c1964.

According to the extended caption, the coach has been flush panelled below the waist and lost its electrics - there should be battery boxes or a regulator visible so maybe that’s a socket for a shore supply on the end (or there were more of these and it was fed power from a generator in another vehicle).

c.1964 - Hull (Paragon).

Best regards,

 Rob.

Can anyone explain the Black Arrow branding please?

Quick Google shows Black Arrow was Britains first rocket meant to launch satellites. Seems it was authorised in 1964.

Just wonder if it was an exhibition coach "selling" the idea to business or the great unwashed. Given that the."Space Race" was quite a topic at the time.

The Black Arrow rocket logo is totally different to that on the coach. However there was a construction company called Black Arrow that a similar logo to that on the coach and been a departmental vehicle it would seem that this vehicle could be in use with them.

Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Al Taylor, for the information about the Black Arrow branding. It sounds most plausible.

This evening, thanks once more to John Turner, on Flickr, we see Thompson, K1, 62058, from York shed, as it runs light at Cottingham South junction, on the 1st February, 1964. According to the extended caption, it was withdrawn later on in 1964, on the 30th November, and was dismantled by Draper's, Hull.

Interesting idea. Why, in pre-privatisation days, would it be on a coach side though?
