This evening I have a photo’ by Woolwinder on Flickr, of 37161, at Nafferton, on the 25th August, 1979. It’s an up service of Mk1 stock, on the 14.02 Scarborough to Hull service. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 11, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 11, 2020 Thank you, Steve for that excellent photo’ of Goole signalbox. Tonight I have a further photo’ by Woolwinder on Flickr of a two car refurbished class 101 DMU at Nafferton, on a service to Hull at 15.40, on the 16th May, 1979. EddieK
The Class 101 at Nafferton in May 1979 could be 51230 - 56369, which is also (I believe) in this image: https://www.railcar.co.uk/images/2044 This unit was among the first to be refurbished when the scheme got underway; the prototype refurbished 101 set was doing its demonstration tour between mid 1974 and mid 1975 and it looks like West Yorkshire PTE were keen to have "their" DMU fleet refurbished and their first refurbished 108s appeared from April 1975. Returning to the above 101, BR records show that 56369 was refurbished in February 1976, and 51230 in March 1976. For some reason, Doncaster did not outshop all of the vehicles within a 2, 3 or 4 car unit on the same date. Being an early refurbishment, the unit had some obvious features that were not carried through to later vehicles, such as discontinuous body side rain gutters and the Blue Square MU codes painted on the cab ends. I have found this image of a 101 that was refurbished in May 1976 and although the discontinuous gutters are still retained, the blue square codes had not been applied. Returning to 51230 - 56369 from the Nafferton image, the next planned overhaul was a "C4" in March 1978, and a C4 only involved bogie and underframe work, so no retrofit of continuous rain gutters and no repaint. The unit returned to Doncaster Works in September 1980 at which point the rain gutters were brought up to the current standard of being continuous, and the white livery gave way to the Blue/Grey prevalent on refurbished 101s at the time.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 13, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 13, 2020 (edited) Thank you, EddieK for the detailed information about that two car class 101 at Nafferton. It’s most informative and very welcome. So, tonight I have a further photo’ by Woolwinder on Flickr, of a down service DMU at Lowthorpe - a location not often photographed for some reason - on its way to Scarborough at 16.19, on the 16th May, 1979. It’s formed of a two car class 114, DMBS & DTCL, and a two car class 108, DTCL & DMBS. Please note that there is no first class yellow stripe on the DTCL for some reason. Declassification to second class only did not take place until 1983. Both units are non refurbished. Lowthorpe DMU 16 May 1979 by Woolwinder, on Flickr Best regards, Rob. Pinza-C55
Hi micknich, do you have signalling diagrams for the current Driffield signalbox and for Driffield West ? I have based the signalling at Wansford on your old diagram published a few years ago but not found any diagrams for the other Driffield boxes, ideally about 1950 - 58. Pinza-C55
Thanks for that Mick, the signal which had me scratching my head was number 24. I've only seen 1 photo of Driffield West Junction in 1956 and it is just a slotted post home on a relatively short post. I guess the distant arm must have been removed when the M&DR closed to passengers in 1950 ? Here's the junction in my simulation. Although I have built the whole M&DR , the Market Weighton line only goes as far as Kellythorpe crossing which you can see near the top left corner. Pinza-C55
In May 1978 I paid my third visit to Burdale station and here is the shattered ruin on that hot summer day. It's amazing to think that restored it would have been worth a quarter of a million today today.
