RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted March 26, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 26, 2020 When I initially stripped the locos down to start work on them, one of the models of 31110 was really difficult to get the body off. I assumed I was going to find a case of Mazak rot to the chassis block. It appears the chassis is ok but the plates below the cabs that hold the coupling mechanism and the contacts for the lights, were both starting to warp. A plate was borrowed from one of the other locos to use as a template, and a couple of plasticard replacements were made, all seems fine again. And the other 3 bodies have got some colour ! RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted March 27, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 27, 2020 A slight interlude while working on the 31's. Jack (my Son) populated the interiors, and I've weathered it. As these were introduced right at the end of our modelling era, it's only had a very light covering. Pics suggest the chassis was dirty but the bodywork stayed/was kept, pretty clean, even the roof area only seemed to have localised exhaust staining. RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted March 29, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 29, 2020 The chassis' have had some work done. Some of the light units have had to be opened up, to remove the headlight lenses from 31460 and to add them to 31450. Drivers also added. The Red bufferbeam ex-31452 has been painted Black for 31460, and the Black bufferbeam ex-31296 has been painted Red for 31209. Which seems a bit daft, but it was easier to do that than swap chassis blocks around to give the light configurations that I want !! 31452 has a newer style chassis, where the wiring for the lights are plugged into the chassis. As I want this loco as the rear of a double-header, I've just unplugged the wiring, so if I change my mind I only have to plug them back in. Although this is unlikely as Hornby saw fit to make a complete mess of the lights on this model, by making the cab-front marker lights shine White as well as the headcode box when travelling forward !! (they do also show Red at the rear, like they should) So it was harder for them to get it wrong as it would have been to get it right. Appropriate pipework has been added too. Cheers, Phil.

RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted April 1, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 1, 2020 The plus side of being stuck at home is, plenty of time at the workbench. The downside is, I forget to take any pics as I plod on ! Current state of play is- The bodyside grilles have had a dark wash over them, and the chassis' have had the weathering started, with 'Frame dirt', 'Brake dust' & 'Rust' applied so far. Rebuild, then finish the weathering next. I've got a feeling the 'rebuild' won't be quite so straight forward..... Cheers, Phil. 7

RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted April 5, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 5, 2020 Opened another stock-box ! This one has a NSE 108 & a couple of snowploughs, none of which particularly suit Cornwall, but Rule 1..... Anyway, the ploughs, & the 108's chassis + roof have had a coat of matt varnish. The seating has been made ready for passengers (hint hint Jack!!) by painting the floor, partitions & first class seats. Not entirely sure the colours I've used are spot-on, but from the limited picture evidence I could find, it'll do ! Cheers, Phil. 6
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted April 7, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 7, 2020 I wanted a 'not quite clean' finish to the ploughs. I mixed up a thin wash of white spirit and Humbrol Dark Earth weathering powder, figuring that it wouldn't leave an even covering of colour everywhere. It was liberally splashed all over and allowed to run downwards, before drying with a hair-dryer. My thinking was, the weathering on these is from rainwater landing on them and running down, while they are stood in a siding, rather than the usual situation of dirt getting thrown around while the vehicle is moving. Pics show one plough done and one untouched. Cheers, Phil.
