Take a look at older photos of the lengthy approaches to certain London termini.   They are full of brick retaining walls of various shapes and sizes.

Thanks all so far!

Try looking on google images, there are some amazing ideas on there, some great ones around the Liverpool area.

Could you please be a little more specific as to which places in the Liverpool area you mean? I've tried Google Images, however 'retaining wall' and 'railway' etc only yields limited results as one doesn't quite know a specific location to look for.

As you think of your layout as being in Liverpool, some doubt as to the need for retaining walls. Most lines in central Liverpool cut out from the local sandstone.

Nooooo, I was really looking forward to model some nice walls! I recon my line will be the exception then ;)

Heading south west out of Birmingham New Street there are retaining walls in blue brick that combine different slope angles (batter) with arches, buttresses and other decorative brickwork.  These are also overlaid with an assortment of pipes, cables, electrical boxes and the like.  I don't have any photos I'm afraid.

Forster Square in Bradford springs to mind, have a look on here for Bradfield Gloucester Square, a nice retaining wall there, also Halifax Powell Street from memory and Hornsey Broadway on Kier Hardy and co's emgauge70s site!

Watching with interest as I like retaining walls myself, very modellable!

The approaches to Liverpool Street in London sport a fine selection of largely brick retaining walls which have been built, rebuilt, altered, hacked about and modified over many years.

Glasgow Queen Street has substantial retaining walls.

Brighton station is built on a hillside and features massive concrete retaining walls on one side and is elevated above street level on the other.    The western coastal route also approaches through lengthy cuttings with some modest brick retaining walls and approaches Portsmouth & Southsea at the other end of the route likewise; in the latter case the eastern wall is the original canal wall with the railway was later built in the widened canal bed.

Bootle branch has some retaining walls up the top end close to Kirkdale area.

The old CLC route, now Merseyrail along most of the section after Cressington too, but they are hardly inspiring.

If you discount the deep cuttings of Olive mount, Lime street and Edge hill then Liverpool actually has only a few actual retaining walls in the sense that has been posted here, towards the city the lines were carved into solid sandstone.
