Folkestone-Dover sea wall wash-out

Recommended Posts

This film is really accurate with regard to just about everything. The footbridge even has the correct colour.

I had quite forgotten about this little film, I downloaded it when it was first posted and simply forgot all about it. Looking at

it again the plan is a work of genius.

I've been a long time follower of this thread as I actually work on this project.  The fantastic photos from Mr Todd have helped us enormously as an archive to see when things got done!

The weather on New Years Day was rather wet and unfortunately this shows in the timelapse footage taken on the day - I'll have to use "Rainex" next time!

The rest of the footbridge stairs will be installed on Sunday.

and a few low-res photos from the ground...

Nice, Thanks,

I reckon you have had a few days to photoshop, the wind and rain, out of the above.   :scratchhead:

With Olympic Triton on station, Holyhead Towing's Afon Cefni is being kept busy acting as Guard Vessel and fast transfer boat Holyhead Bay likewise, running between the port and the Triton.

Well I hope the weather in Dover is better than London this afternoon.

I just came home and its cold wet and miserable out. I wish all concerned the best of luck.

The weather, was reasonable today, this time next week,it could be snowing.

I rolled up, around 1030, fresh off the 2nd hourly run of the 61,bus.

I stuck around until 1330, bus run home.

Had a chat with,     ffinybryn, until he was called back.

Here a a few, from the time of my visit.

All from the top of Shakey Cliff.

To me there is something not quite resolved about those two spans.

I think it is to do with the expectation that they are trad 'Bow string' trusses so there seem to be a couple of bits missing where they bear onto the central pier.

But they are not classic bow strings, more a Warren triangulated structure - so perhaps the top members should have been straight?

It somehow makes me recall Churchward's irritation at having to put curved running plates on his rational new locomotives to satisfy the traditionalists.

I think there's a couple of things at play, dh:

The trusses are cantilevered off the concrete pedestals, as you say; historically, they would extend further to line up with the column, and then the vertical load would go straight down into the pier from that point.

I suspect the architect did it this way to get some symmetry as he had to have provision for the stairs down on the seaward side...

That optical anomaly is not helped by the upper chord having 3-500mm of redundant material poking out each end.

The new bridge certainly is an excellent piece of work and will last for years ,what are the connections made of between bridge parts? Those guys in the bucket probably decided that as its quiet we might as well go for a ride and have a birds eye view!
