I only ever used it once, Mum and Dad took us by train from Water Orton to Saltley . We then walked to the Clifton cinema which was quite a walk and situated alongside the Aston line to Stechford. Harborne fire station...yes remember the building but cant recall if operational when I worked Harborne area 1987 to 96....do remember the old nick which was demolished....by accident apparently....I was a sgt ...one Sunday afternoon drinking a cup of tea in the back office with two of my Pcs...suddenly a flustered office Pc came in ..."quick the chief insp has turned up...." Cue Sgt and two Pcs hastily leave the back office and hide in the dog kennels in the rear yard...

Harborne Fire Station was built c1907 and is Grade 2 Listed. I'm not sure when it closed but was converted to apartments about 20 years ago.

Yes the old nick was listed until the builder accidently demolished it...anyway back to the modelling, has taken a back seat recently...holidays sauna like conditions in loft, have a number of projects which had been put on the back burner....now looking at them with enthusiasm again

One of my projects will be providing a power source to a model of a Johnson single in my possession. I bought it last year on a well known online auction site. It had a tender drive, and was beautifully made and painted. It came in a wooden case and was clearly well loved. The problem, the tender drive unit. It had, I presume a ks motor which was powerful enough driving the two outer tender axles. The problem the tender wheels kept shorting on the outer metal motor casing. I had contemplated fitting an arrangement similar to a modeller Steve Banks if I recall in his S scale models...two motors in the tender. I think though I will cheat completely and purchase a replica 57 foot powered chassis and place this under a LMS liveried parcels van. More when bought probably November from the Warley show. Im hoping at this venue to buy a revamped stanier class 3 from Branchlines. I spoke with him last year, he and Dave Ellis of SE finecast are reintroducing the ex ks nucast models....many of which im sure will never be RTR...but then again?

Quelle Plonker as Dellboy would say, just realised the LMS parcels van is 50 foot not 57ft as per the chassis ( also does a 64 ft version)....no matter the chassis motors are so low down, and well hidden they can fit into a carriage with windows. Ideal for DMUs....thinks of Worsley models class 103 waiting in wings..

That really depends on the state of the moulds. Dave indicated (to me anyway) that a certain degree of new moulds would be necessary, whilst the chassis would have to be completely new to take account of today's standards.

Good Morning Horsetan

I spoke with Brian of Branchlines at Warley last November he informed me that the chassis was being revamped with new etches, had been corresponding with him as to progress...the latest reply was April...thought to stop bothering him not least this years Warley show is getting ever closer

Best wishes Brian

It was morning when I started typing...RowanJ will confirm that some of my correspondence with him started in the morning before being sent early evening by the time id finished

Mike Edge has started on doing an etched version, last year he had done a bit on the chassis, but it was on the basis of when he had time. Maybe if more said they were interested it might get done a bit quicker?

Wasn't that the Fowler 3P, rather than the Stanier one?

Just recorded my disappointment on another thread to discover wizard models and the comet models range won't be at the Warley show this year. . On looking at their webpage it seems they arnt attending any of the major shows, more the " specialist" such as scale four ...please the descriptions of the shows are my own but may be a sign that kit and part producers don't get enough trade at the more general type of show. This is a shame I have noticed though that the section of small traders at Warley has decreased in recent years ..thoughts only...not wishing to start a debate I will leave that to other threads...best wishes Brian

Just received a very nice email from replica railways. They produce two powered coach chassis. To match the British rail units...57 and 64 ft. The 57 foot which I would require is manufactured with 12 mm wheels. I would require 14mm. They informed me they would supply the 57 footer with the bigger wheels if required having done so for other customers seeking to achieve the same as I. They even included photos and instructions...I will be ordering mine soon great product and fine service to be applauded.

Just been readingMichael Edges thread. Blandford , who has posted on here, asked him about a proposed stanier 3 p. He clearly has it on his radar but is concentrating on delivering the Fowler version. His kits are wonderful and he clearly a master modeller..on another theme close to my heart it appears kernow models are to stock a new run of the Heljan Garratt next year. The promise is, the glitches that bedevilled the Hattons commission initial run will have been ironed out. To recap my experience...poor motors...poor pick ups and wheels coming adrift on axles. I have just bought the Oakwood press book on the Wolverhampton to Water Orton line. It is a fine book but Water Orton hardly figures in it...no photos the nearest location being Park Lane jct. I was very lucky as child...probably about five. My aunt lived in Aldridge on that line. Mum and dad took us by train to Castle Bromwich. We then caught a bham to Walsall train from there to Aldridge. They were all DMU most likely the Park Royal class 103. My uncle picked us up from Aldridge station with his motorcycle and sidecar. Mum and I in the sidecar, dad on the rear pillion. Another memory of rail travel early sixties we went to Drayton Manor park circa 1965...We caught another DMU this time from the Derby direction platform...something I had never done before or since. The train went via the slow lines to Whitacre then up the jct there towards Kingsbury...past the sidings at Hams Hall where a stanier either a 5 or class 8 was at the head of a line of wagons. We got off the train at Wilnecote..heck of a walk to the park.

Forgive me going a tad off topic, but I suspect the reason these quality small suppliers aren't going to Warley is the cost of attendance. From memory, the smallest stall space available was in excess of £1000 ten years ago, and I'm sure it won't have gone down since! Add in hotels, eating, fuel and time, and you need to generate an awful lot of sales to even cover. Bear in mind as well for folk like Andrew Hartshorne (who can of course speak for himself), a lot of sales would be made anyway by mail order, as you've shown.

I'm just glad these guys do any exhibitions, as it's nice to have a browse of the products in reality. Nottingham is usually pretty good in March, and in the past a good few have turned up in Peterborough, now in December.

Thanks Both

Yes I suspect it is a commercial decision and fully respect  and support the traders in what must be tough times. I wasn't being critical just will miss them at the event. The ability to look closely at products is a real bonus. Thank goodness for these small traders, still miss the likes of crownline.

I have another  Saltley viaduct shot from Don which I will add later

Best wishes Brian

My conversations with a couple of traders who stopped doing Warley because the costs involved meant that they found it hard to break even on the weekend. It was better for them to do half a dozen shows around the country.

Totally unsurprised. I dread to think the kind of fee charged for stands at Warley, then add in the transport, parking, accommodation. The traders would need to shift several thousands of pounds worth of stock to make a profit.

Not been to Warley for years because it is just too big for me. Give me Stafford in February every year !!!

My sentiments exactly. The last time I went, many years ago, there weren't any seats and some jobsworth told me I couldn't sit on the floor to eat my sandwiches, as I might block an exit - presumably I'd have had to die at just the same time as there was an emergency in the hall! It was very difficult to see any of the layouts properly because of the numbers, and to cap it all I was stung by the NEC for an extra fiver on the way out for parking. Never again.

The smaller shows give a far pleasanter experience, you get a chance to see layouts properly and talk to the operators, and there's often a better choice of small suppliers. No brainer!

John.

post-23587-0-09960400-1536858821_thumb.jpegThanks to all who contribute to this , I hadn't meant to stir up any negativity . This thread I hope is about enjoyment in our hobby, in addition to record what is available in the history of what I have always felt a neglected area until recently certainly as far as photography. In that mood another of Dons stepladder on viaduct shots best wishes Brian

My order of tender chassis frames and 1929 fifty seven foot LMS coach sides for a corridor brake arrived today having been ordered yesterday from Wizard ( comet). Great service, and yes the hobby owes Andrew a big thank you for taking over this range.

Best laid plans etc, fitted the replica chassis to coach...comet tender under chassis to the spinner tender....plenty of power in the chassis to push the whitemetal loco, Howver kept derailiing the tender . I'm sure if I perservered, but gave up...Johnson single now a nice display model...like most, of the rest of my extensive stud. Ok they can all run if required ...anyway chassis put to good use. I have Hornby class 110 body shells. In addition have Worsley models etched brass class 103 cab fronts and sides. I want the Park Royal set , the Birmngham area being an early recipient f these and other units. I had 14 mm coach wheels fitted by replica...now need to replace with 12mm. Fortunately easily changed already done one bogie ...will be buying some more tomorrow from Tennents trains my local model shop. I will photo
