Hi All

Partial success with the anti bubble measures.......

Picture taken from a similar spot.....

attachicon.gifIMG_0230.resized.JPG

Also have found what may well be a suitable picture to cover up the badly aligned basckscene.....

Looks OK but just need to get the amount I've got to reduce the picture right so it blends in.....

Hope fully be able to fix in the next couple of days....

Also had a good session shunting as the more I shunt the 16 tonners over the yard the less problems I'll have on the layout's debut.....

Found a couple more mini issues today....Back to back's & a pointblade issue......

The problem with light kitbuilt stock!!!!!!!

But it's something I haven't made time to do previously & regretted it.....Also one of the Jinties doesn't run as well as it might at slow speed...... If time I'll have to strip it down as it has been well run in....I think it could be a pick up problem but we'll see.,....

Well that's all for now

Cheers Bill

Does look better, and after all clouds arn't meant to be flat.

Keep it up

Hi

Not been any updates as my internet connection spends most of the time unconnected......

Get about 5/10 mins then gone for hours so don't want to spend time trying to post then losing it.....

There has been reasonable progress over the past few days.....

Trees planted, more grass & fencing & wagon couplings fitted.....

Will post pics when the connection improves....If it does...

Cheers Bill

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi All

Still no pics.....Camera problems & intermittent internet ....hopefully sorted soon.....

Has been progress though....

Lighting pelmet & new brackets fitted & working....

Makes it so much easier to see what I'm doing!!!!!

Been running/shunting /playing quite a bit....Certainly more than previous layouts......

The frustration is when a problem arises...

Eg a three coach kitbuilt set runs one way fine but not the other way.... turn the set round & it runs fine both ways!!!!!!

The good thing is that today I had the time to spend finding out why & sorting the problem......

On previous layouts I have been happy in the knowledge that certain stock only runs in certain directions/positions in a train etc....

The problem is guest operators who don't know so I'm trying for all stock to be able to do almost anything...Except coaches in the coal yard....

A lot of the stock is kitbuilt & none of it has been run for nearly 20 years....

That includes a few of the loco's......

So there has been a lot of TLC applied which seems to have helped as most work fine now......

So ....There won't be many major new scenic works....Mainly tidying up & finishing so the layout is presentably to my satisfaction....

Hopefully plenty more running to iron out any other problems.

Will try & take a pic or two in the next day or two to show progress....

Cheers Bill

Hi All

Actually back online at the moment.....Been off most of the time for the last couple of days......

Figured out what's wrong with the camera I think....The battery.....

Unless fully charged the flash takes too much out of it so another one on it's way....

Also a new remote switch as my old one's pin seems to be bent.......

Any way all now grassed....

Just the embankment between the colliery & main line to infill......

I did it last week but wasn't happy with it so ripped it up....

A job for next week.......

Also spent a lot of time touching up ballast gaps etc & making & fitting hedges......

Anyway, although not finished it will be exhibitable to my satisfaction which is the main thing......

A couple of pics.......

Hi Tony

Thanks for the comment.....

I'm pleased that you think that certain angles have a Somerset feel.....

Although I grew up in Somerset I lived on the edge of Sedgemoor which I assume is different to the Mendips so I have been trying to set the scene using pictures from books as well as my memory....Sadly it's too far away for day trips to get a feel for the area....

As for the shunting I really must have a word with the driver!!!!!!!

I'll be there with Yard Shunter. I will be operating it with my mini compute called Raspberry Pi but still need to use my NCE Power Cab.

I am stopping at Mother in laws for the week.

Hi Ray

Look forward to seeing you & Yard Shunter again....

Hi All

Fingers firmly crossed but the Internet problem is hopefully sorted......

The Home Hub would appear to be the problem......

Hopefully get a few pics of progress in the next day or two.......

Unfortunately due to the demands of SWMBO & the good weather meaning outdoor jobs to be done, not much more has been done except tidying up.......

The next job that I must get done is to tidy up the front baseboard edge....A sheet of 4mm ply should sort that out......

Then really it is a case of touching up areas of track/scenics etc that need it.......

Signals will follow......Hopefully by it's next outing at Hayle in August....

Also people animals & cameo scenes.......

Hopefully  my camera is now sorted so I should be able to take some pics to post.......

Cheers Bill

Hi All

I haven't actually done anything to the layout.....Life took over.....

But I have had a couple of running sessions.....

Last Friday my nephew came round & we spent a couple of hours running the trains as they will run plus shunting both the goods train & also the coal train.....

Today my son & grandson popped round & had a short play.....

A very useful excercise as I don't normally spend enough time 'playing' prior to a layout's debut....

One 16t mineral & one brakevan need checking as they derail....But at different places......

Rewheeling will I think solve the problem certainly in the case of the mineral wagon......

The problem seems to be that Parkside provide wheels that are too good for my trackwork......Romfords seem much better as they are a tad coarser.....

I also discovered that 'Wilton' has a prototypical tendency to slip.....Just needs driving with care & she's fine......

Bought the ply for the front of the baseboards....

Just need to cut the contours & fix.....

Well next week as much time as possible will be spent tidying/tarting up....& on Friday hopefully it'll fit in the van.......

I will try & take a pic or two to post......

It won't be finished but it looks complete & I'm happy with how it looks......

Cheers Bill

Hi  All

Working a late shift today & now on holiday for a week......Hooray....

Lot's to do though, both on the layout & garden.....

Last night I finished off a Dumper truck kit I started nearly 18 years ago......

It's a whitemetal kit that I made up,sprayed yellow but left in bits....

Last night I glazed it,fixed it together & weathered it......

I used Glue'n Glaze for the glazing.....It's amazing how big an aperture you can glaze if careful....much larger than they say.....

I also had to make a new cab roof as I'd lost the original....It's on my bench somewhere !!!!!!

The weathering needs a bit of toning down.....

I also put coal on my removeable loads for the 16tonners & this morning fixed it in place with PVA.....

This morning I rewheeld the errant mineral wagon & by changing round the wheelsets of the brake van got both to work.......

During the course of testing I was also able to iron out a couple more minor glitches......

& a slightly blurred pic of the sidings through the loader......

Although not crystal clear I quite like the 'looking through something' effect.

That's all for tonight.....Busy busy tomorrow....Lot's to be done....

Also on today's list was painting the front base fascia that I cut yesterday......

The one at the mine end I had to do 3 times......

First I cut out a piece that was meant to stay....

Then I drew around the contours with the loading bay in the wrong place....Looked fine but the weighbridge was 3/4 below the ramp.....

Then I did it right.....

Certainly finishes it off nicely in my opinion......

A few gaps to fill but that is for another day......

Last night I wrote a spiel for the punters to read & made a name sign......

Printer ran out of ink so will need to get more tomorrow.....

Tomorrow I must sort out some stock boxes....I have made a start......

Make a cover to go over the 'honours' for Penhallick Junction that are stuck to the lighting pelmet.......

Clean out the van......

Load it up & set it up.....

Firmly cross fingers & see how it goes......

Cheers Bill

Good progress.

You have my full support, especially as your just 1 week ahead of me in the countdown.

Yours looks much more presentable than mine, but thankfully I do have the excuse that it wasn't conceived as an "exhibition" layout.

All the best & good luck

Hi Bill

I am sure it will be all right on the night, as they say. It's looking fantastic as always bill

Will you be setting up today or on Saturday morning.

Hi Ray

I'll be setting up on Friday......Hope to get there about 5'ish.....

Plenty of time to sort out any Gremlins should they appear!!!!!!

Fingers crossed will be OK but it's never been moved.......Taken apart & reassembled but that,s not the same......

See you either this evening or tomorrow....

Hi All

Well all set up & all appears to work fine.......

Either brave or foolish to make such a statement I know......

Certainly the time spent running trains seems to have paid off as so far  (along time 'till Sun 4pm ) so good.....

A couple of minor derailments but only on the first circuit of the particular train.....

The only down side was that I took my camera......

The sun was shining on parts of the layout.....

Take some nice pics......

Camera wouldn't work.....

Baa Humbug or words to that effect !!!!!!

Nice to see Ray this evening......

I'm on my own tomorrow but if you're there say hello.....

Cheers Bill

Anyway hopefully a successful day tomorrow & hopefully sort the camera out.....

Hi All

Well a very pleasing day......

I was very pleased with how the layout performed......

The only problems were with the curvature on the end boards.....A bit too tight for my DJH kitbuilt std 4 tank......Everything else was fine......I managed to get my DJH std 3 to perform after a bit of realignment of the curve.....

Part of the problem with the std 4 is that the couplings are fixed to the pony trucks & as they are quite light they kept on being derailed by the stock that was being hauled....The solution is easy in that I shall fix the couplings to the body......

One of the kit built Maunsell coaches occasionaly derails...Due I think to the wheels catching the coach floor fittings on the rise to the station  at the colliery end.....Again easily remedied......

& a couple of the coal trucks buffer lock when being pushed out of the mine branch siding......This was a move that I hadn't planned for & as it is only the original wagons rebuffering will sort that out......

Sound a lot but they are all minor problems easily remedied......

No problems at all with the track once I'd set it up right......Bear in mind most of the baseboard joints are on a curve & some on an incline as well I was very pleased with the reliability.......

More so than with the camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I charged upthe batteries last night......

It worked fine with all three.......

Got to the show this morning having topped them all up again this morning.......

Not a sausage....Zilch....Nothing.......

Having left it on with the flash up I finally managed to get a couple of 'snaps' off & on through the afternoon.......HUMPHH....

Anyway here they are.......Not brilliant I'm afraid......

Also on the positive side was that I actually quite enjoyed operating the layout.....

A seven hour stint is a long time but although I could do with a couple more trains there was plenty of operational interest.....

Running trains in & out of the station, shunting the coal trains as well as shunting the pick up goods.......

Well hopefully tomorrow is as good........

Hi All

Well that's the debut show over & all went far better than I had hoped.......

Firstly a big thankyou to Ken & all the crew at Helston......

I had a great time....Well fed & watered & made most welcome.....

Hopefully they did well as it seemed a bit quiet at times.......

The layout loaded , unloaded ,set up  ,broke down ,reloaded far quicker than any of my other three previous layouts.....

It also ran better from the off......Still one or two things to improve but nothing major.....Joints on corners !!!!!!

It seemed well received by the public......

So all in all well pleased.....

One issue I did have was powerful permanent magnets & free running individual wagons uncoupling occasionally......

The camera misbehaved again but I did manage some 'snaps'.....

First thing the sun was shining on the layout but from the wrong angle....Ie behind the layout....But I took some pics anyway......

& last but not least Today's helpers.....

post-7844-0-23352100-1492972491_thumb.jpg

Well it's on to a shelf as the next time it's out is in August at Hayle.....

Penhallick Junction is out next so that will need dusting down for July.......

Work will continue in making signals ,weathering stock ,adding crews & head lamps to loco's building more 16tonners.....

I've got 29 but that wasn't really enough....I've already got another 6 kits but I may get some more......

Had two invites but one I had to turn down for this year as I've no holiday left....The other I'm hoping I can squeeze in.....

Well that's all for now.....

Cheers Bill
