Hi All

A bit more progress today......

Got the inner home working.....

Took for ages & the pics of it are rubbish so won't post......

The board is leaning against the wall at present....I only had it up to work on it......

The starter at the Bournemouth end is fixed now......Just need to motorise it.....

post-7844-0-76929000-1503344409_thumb.jpg

Had a bit of an accident.....

While using the superglue I accidentally tipped half of it over me,the floor & my cordless drill.......

The jeans are now a solid lump but fortunately by keeping the moving parts moving & adding a bit of oil the drill seems OK.....

A bit stiff to change from reverse to forward but useable.....

I'll try to get a pic or two of the other signal tomorrow....

Cheers Bill

Hi Bill

Good to catch up with the news. I was tempted to post at the weekend asking about rpogress, but didn't want to add

to the pressure.

All the best for the weekend, just wish I could be there.

TONY

Hi Tony

Thanks for the above.....

It's been an 'interesting' few weeks but that's the way it is.......

At the end of the day it's a hobby & I do it for fun & enjoyment.....

Life takes precedence.......

Any way had some good news in that my son & grandson may well be 'assisting 'me over the weekend....

Hope to catch up with you sometime to see Helstonish....

Cheers Bill

Hi All

All set up yesterday.....Big thanks to SWMBO for her help......

Due to getting ahead yesterday didn't have to start so early today so got to the venue just before 9.....

Normally a start as soon as the show opens is necessary.......

My son & grandson came to help today.....

A big thanks to both for their help......

Especially the purchase of a slab of excellent walnut cake....MMMMMMM DELICIOUS.......

A few issues to start....Set up in the'cold'....It was warm in the Conservatory today.....

The integral legs are not as stable as trestles so a bit of wobble caused a bit of joint movement......

Also a bit of excess speed caused issues occasionally....Young blood.....

However the layout settled down through the day & although it was hot no real problems......

Great to have a long chat to Ray of this parish.......

A few pics......

There were the usual questions about couplings & backscene but the show didn't seem over busy.....Good weather I suppose....

Well tomorrow I shall be assisted by SWMBO.....

Hopefully all will go well & I can take a few more pics......

Oddly enough there don't seem to be as many natural picture settings as on previous layouts.....

But perhaps that's me being picky & lot's more to do scenicly to provide cameo shot potential......

Any way hopefully update again tomorrow....

Hi All

Well another show over........

First a big thankyou to the Hayle club for their invitation & for making me most welcome......

Well fed & watered & all very friendly & helpful.....

THANK'S.....

& as for the cakes....Excellent quality both in looks & more importantly taste.......

Back to more boring things.......

The day went very well.......

One wagon in the mixed goods decided to derail & was despatched to the sin bin....

In fairness there is a slight problem with the trackwork over a board joint but should be easy to remedy......

Because I was being more adventurous with the wagons I was using to shunt had one or two issues with  hands free uncoupling having not checked them before using....

One Bachmann MK1 would only run one way round without derailing....Turned it round no problem.....

One of the point blades on the three way point came adrift......It was in full sun at the time.....

It took longer to heat the soldering iron than to repair.....l

Indeed I think the audience were impressed with the speed of the repair.....

Had a guy record the whole sequence on video with no issues....He spent ages  & seemed pleased with the results & was complementary about the layout.....

Hopefully he will post on You Tube......

It was very hot again today but thankfully there was a slight breeze so with all the windows & doors open it was bearable......

Well a few pics taken by SWMBO......

Normally from 2'ish there is time to take pics but there were still punters around so it's only fair as they've paid to see the layout's operation to keep the trains running.....

Confirmed a booking for November the 5th at Carn Brea Leisure Centre Redruth....

& after that we'll see if any more come in.....

Bizarrely got two potential invites for the next layout that I haven't even decided what it will be,let alone started.......

Some jobs to do.......

Sort out the minor rail joint problem.

Go through all the wagons to make sure they are all shuntable.

Add animals/cameo scenes etc......

The list is endless....

On a positive not the signals worked faultlessly.....

Sadly I don't think many people noticed them......

But I knew they worked !!!!!!

Well that's it for now....

Hi All,

I've tried to link the video taken by the gentleman( I now know to be) George Bryant on You Tube but can't seem to get a link working.....

I put in You Tube Haydon Gurney on Google & it came up.......

The video was taken at the Hayle show last weekend as mentioned above....

If any of you more computer savvy can link it to this thread I'd be most grateful....

Not brilliant pictures but no layouts are set up at present & the test track above my modelling bench is not well lit......

The brake pipe still painted needs to be painted.....

Hopefully get more items of stock weathered & crew & lamps to fit in the next few weeks before the show Nov 5th....

Hi All

Well the next outing is Nov 5th At Carn Brea leisure centre Redruth so a bit of work to do....

Last night I spent upgrading the couplings on my goods wagon fleet......

Although they could all be coupled up it was impossible to shunt hands free as the original couplings were not set right.....

Also they were made of copper wire which is too flexible/soft......

Next tasks will be to work my way through the loco fleet weathering/adding crew/adding coal/adding lamps etc.to the newer additions.....

Also try & add some cameo scenes to the layout.....

Any way...Lots to do but no pics at the moment.....

Cheers Bill

Good to see you're back at it Bill, will 4 weeks be enough?

All the best

Hi Tony

It'll have to be......

At the end of the day the layout works (touch lot's of wood ) so it is mainly a case of adding scenes & scenics to it.....

Hi All

Miserable day weatherwise today so took advantage to weather/detail 34041 Wilton......

She was allocated in the early '50's to Bath shed....

& although transferred away certainly ran on the line later though probably not in the time period I'm modelling.....

Rule 1 applies......

I have a picture of her on a relief Pines on 9 June 1962 leaving Bath in the book The Somerset & Dorset Remembered Part 1 pg 21...

Near enough for me.....

Anyway....Not as easy as I'd thought.....

When I last ran her I'd noticed that the front wheel of the front Pony/bogie didn't turn.....

For some reason the hole the axle runs in was too tight....

Drilled out & no problem.....

The wheel wouldn't stay on the axle when I replaced it.....

Cleaned up with Isopropyl alcohol,a bit of filing to roughen up the surfaces & superglue....

Problem solved....

I then noticed that the trailing bogie had proper wheel flats......

These wheels didn't turn either !!!!!!

the problem here was that a metal plate is riveted over the axle to hold the wheels in place....

The solution was to bend the plate away a bit....Clean out where the axle fits & pack with silicone grease....Now runs freely....

Oddly enough I had noticed that the loco ran fine with a load of 4 coaches but really struggled on the run upgrade into the station....

Probably found out why.....

Then to weathering......

Did the top last night with a dark grey to simulate soot....Also a light dusting down the sides & left to dry overnight.....

This morning used frame dirt to lightly spray 'muck' over the body & tender....

Also lightly sprayed  the wheels & chassis.....

The plan was to put the loco on my rolling road to make sure the moving oarts didn't jam up with the paint.....

Unfortunately the wheel treads were also lightly sprayed.....

No problem....Out came the wheel cleaning kit & treads cleaned....

Except one of the centre driving wheel fell off it's axle......

With a bit of persuasion it was replaced & seems to be properly quartered.....Hopefully it won't fall off again.....

Next head lamps ,front coupling & vac pipe, crew in cab & coal in tender.....

I'm quite pleased with the end result.....Dirty but not overly so......

A couple of pics

post-7844-0-96630800-1507408246_thumb.jpg

post-7844-0-05810600-1507408267_thumb.jpg

I really must sort out a photo plank....

The layout isn't set up at the moment & my yard of track that I use for testing isn't set up in a good place for taking decent pics.....

I've also done Std 4 2-6-0 76069 but very lightly weathered ,crew, coal, lamps & vac pipe.....

I also stripped down a couple of Bulleid coaches I bought off the internet......

They'd looked fine in their boxes in Carmine & cream but I'd always intended to spray them green.....

When I took them out of their boxes the first job was to remove the blobs of superglue & prise them apart.....

Anyway, three light coats of acrylic green & they're getting there......

Still not convinced about acrylic paint & spraying.....

I did the underframes in frame dirt at the same time......

Well that's all for now

Cheers Bill

Hi All

A bit of time today so spent ages fixing numbers to the resprayed coaches.....

Started last Sunday using some very old (bought in the mid 1990's ) HMRS transfers......

They are a sort of pressfix......

They were so fiddly for various reasons that I tried various other means to do the numbers.....

Even looked up Fox transfers site......

Any way as I had them I today persevered.....& although not perfect after a coat of dirt they hopefully will look OK......

So a s implied above sprayed with some homemade weathered black & frame dirt & tomorrow will put back together & hopefully post a pic or two....

The other thing is whether the colours match those coaches sprayed over 20 years ago with a colour I was told was right by an expert but I can't remember what make or colour name it was.....

Ah well the fun of modelling.....

To be fair the parcls van I resprayed looks quite a good match but I did give that an undercoat of grey......

Anyway

Cheers for now

Hi

Well a bit more progress over the last few days......Std 5 73068 has been medium weathered crew, real coal, screw link couplings, vac pipe & head code fitted....

Std 4 2-6-0 76109 has been lightly weathered & coal added to the tender.....

Fitted auto couplers to 5 more 16t mineral wagons.......

I have run out of enamel Track Dirt paint so will have to mix up some more as locally I can only get acrylic......

The jury's still out on spraying with acrylic.....

Working for the next 5 days so opportunities will be limited to do much but hopefully crew/coal/weathering will continue....

Cheers Bill

Hi

All set up & working....Famous last words tempting fate.....

SWMBO came along to help........

Just a couple of trains put on.......The ones most likely to be a problem...

The coal train & goods train plus the milk tanks which hadn't run before.......

Track all clean & wheels cleaned......

 Get in reasonably early tomorrow....

Rest of stock to put out & then hopefully an enjoyable day playing trains.....

Cheers Bill

Hi

An interesting day ,& very enjoyable....

Thanks to Ian & the Cornwall O Gauge Guild for the invite & for making us most welcome.....

SWMBO assisted....I think even enjoyed running trains......

Spad after Spad.....The same train round & round.....Occasional derailment......

But the kids in the audience loved it & she enjoyed entertaining them......

A big thankyou to her for her help both in running the layout but also for the help in setting up & taking down after the show....

Certainly made life easier....THANKS......

I meanwhile shunted the yard & had time to talk to the audience who asked lots of questions......

At times we had a good crowd & at others we didn't......The usual really.......

The layout performed reasonably well.....

One or two wagons refused to auto uncouple ....

Because of the rough movement of the traverser the baseboard joints moved causing derailments ( it didn't help that I didn't take enough clamps )

A wire came loose & had to be resoldered.......

Operator error.......

SWMBO is into horses & carts & bought a couple of slightly overscale models which can be seen in some of the pictures.....

However she is now thinking about a diorama....So watch this space......

Indeed one gentleman having come back several times to ask lots of questions when I mentioned her interest put his hand into his rucksack & gave her two more.....

He reckoned that he wouldn't ever use them so was pleased that they would go to a good home.....Point blank refused any payment.....

Very generous gesture....THANK YOU very much if you are reading this....

Anyway some pics...

Didn't get as many as I would like but here are sme of them.....

Hi

AS a postscript to the above.....

Early on in the show a gentleman came over & presented me with a DVD of Haydon Gurney taken at the Hayle show this August......

I've just watched it having only just remembered the kind gift......

It is I think the same as the one on You Tube....But it is beautifully presented with a professional style label on the DVD....

If you follow RMWeb .....THANK YOU VERY MUCH......

A really nice gesture which is really appreciated.....

Thanks again

Bill
