Having been lucky enough to see the progress unfold as it happened, I have to say the elevation is amongst the best I've seen.

Enough to be noticeable, but subtle enough to look 'right'....

The pic above of the 37 is how it appears to my eye, the 153 pic looks exaggerated (notice the angle of the windowframe in the background)

It's just enough to have the 'snaking' motion of a train rounding a seeping curve.

Cheers,

Phil.

Why thank you Gents, that's very kind of you to comment so positively 🙂

So I guess the fishing harbour was the next block construction I attempted...... the seabed needed rising first to match the industrial harbour just to the left of this one, I realise I could have said it was controlled by locks but my head just couldn't get around 2 different water levels 🤣

Raised seabed and some approximate walling

Then it was time to look at the larger branch line that I had always envisaged. I'll explain the fiddle yard to this in later posts but the idea is that it goes up an inline behind the mainline

Planning, planning and plastercloth

I really like the harbour and the bridge. 👍

Not sure about the half timbered pub by the sea in the west country though? 🙂 Though not doubt somebody will be along to tell us where there is one!

Dartmouth, Exeter and Totnes have all got half-timbered buildings, including Exeter's 'house that moved'. Perhaps it moved to the seaside! So while half-timbered is not a predominant type of construction in the West Country there are examples.  Just make sure the right regional cider makers and brewers logos and pub signs are used to decorate your pub.

Although a bit inland - does the Bell Inn at Moretonhampstead count?

moretonhampstead-devon-england-uk-the-be

Or heading East you could have the Llandoger Trow at Bristol docks better know as the potential model for the Admiral Benbow in Treasure Island

Well The Bell Inn looks ace, thank you. Maybe not around the harbour but perhaps I won't need to hide this too much 🙂

So considering the harbour, acrylics and the paint on and wipe off method didn't seem to really work for me

So I painted a general base coat of

And then armed with these

I did a lot of dry brushing to end up with this

I also applied a few greens towards the bottom and with a few upright posts added ended up with this

Even now I am not completely convinced but my skills with the acrylics really seemed miles away from what I have watched other on here achieve with ease and so what I have is probably the best I feel I can currently apply. Any advice would be very welcome 🙂

  • 1 year later...

Wow, a whole year and not one post!!!!!!

To some extent that can be explained by having an extension done on the house and the subsequent decorating........time in the shed was somewhat at a premium. Still, I have been back in there again over the the last few months and slight progress is being made.......hopefully I'll get some pictures up soon.

Had a bit of a scare just before Christmas with my Prodigy Express transformer literally blowing up at midnight with a large bang and being thrown into darkness, still Trident Trains (local shop) kindly tested a few locos just to make sure the decoders were OK and fortunately all is good. Hopefully the layout is all ok

Just thought I'd wish you all Health and Happiness in 2024 and another year of great modelling 😁

So felt it unfair not to post a couple of pics, branch line and station area at the start of the year and then towards the end.......

So did some more in the station area including attempting to put a minor road down into the harbour over a gated crossing, I've gone gated as mainly I'll be running 70's and 80's rail traffic.

Platform edging around the bays, the idea is  the nearest bay is for the branch and the furthest for parcels traffic, in the modern era I'll chuck the sleepers in there 😁

Hi Adrian

Looks like you've been busy. I been looking back to try and work out the plan of the layout, could you do a updated trackplan perhaps as its come a long way since the original terminus it seems. One question I have is where does the incline go, to an elevated FY?

Kepp going mate.

Hi Ian........hmmmmmm.......trackplan, that's a good point well made. I'll sketch one and post it up but yes the incline does go to a raised fiddle yard...........which is all rather tight...........but works 😎

For someone that says he 'doesn't know what he's doing, and doesn't know how to do it', I reckon it's all coming along rather nicely......😉😉

Once again, thanks for the kind words gents, they really are appreciated, I do find Forums much more personable than Facebook groups and so it is always nice to get some thumbs, likes and comments. I was once a member of a Lowered Split Screen VW Forum, there was a wealth of information from both sides of the Atlantic and the banter was great too..........Facebook ultimately killed it and so it is nice to see this Forum buoyant amongst all the competition out there...........but that's enough waffle!!!!!

So, as I mentioned a few posts ago my Prodigy Express exploded, well at least the transformer did, low and behold Rails had one of their Advent Calendar deals the following day and so this was duly purchased.........but where should it go. Well ultimately not here

But I think here is much better

And how much better does it all look with a local programming tack

Then it was time for a little play 57305 enters the platform

Once again gents many thanks for the feedback it is always appreciated 😎

So a post this time with a slight warning although I'm sure you all know any way.

My good friend @Phil Mc has always been on at me to make sure the blinds are shut and no locos or rolling stock are left on the window sill or anywhere where the sunlight gets in. In my typical relaxed style that doesn't always happen and to be fair up til now everything has actually behaved really well especially a Hornby 67 with the Maple Leaf which was on the window sill for months and it still looks and runs perfectly.

Sadly with the extension going on last year my attention wasn't the model railway and my pink Hattons 66 was on the edge of the fiddle yard that does get partial daily sunlight............Yep it's faded and I realise it is purely my fault. That said in some ways it's better, I think it might have been perfect if it had of had 2 months less sun, but there you go 🤣 Of course the dilemma now is do I correct the fade, paint and transfers or do I monitor fading the other side more closely and then weather...........roll on the sunlight😎

So as supplied with a reference image

Pink2.jpg.4fb544ed7fd62dde9c525dbce5a581d0.jpg

After after some sunlight!!!!!

Pink1.jpg.904e6fd287f8a620064adb89cf1a8ba7.jpg

No complaints from me as it is my fault but interesting that the sunlight affects some rolling stock a lot more than other 😉
