Looking good. Where did you get the brick paper?? I could use some of that...

I believe Ian said back on Post #19 that it was from Martin Wood. Martin doesn't have a website, although I think he has a Facebook account, but ping him an email (see the other post), I've found him very approachable, and have just received a couple of samples - shall be making a purchase shortly!  Highly recommended, the sample sheets look fantastic, some of the best brickwork I've seen in a long time.

Have spent today test fitting a hinged bottom to one of the baseboards which will have some of the digital hardware fixed to it, and should a problem arise I should be able to get to it a lot easier than laying on my back under the layout.

I have also spent some time making the guttering for the buildings using umbrella stays and brass wire

Once happy with it all I'll paint them and glue them in place.

Another busy day today fitting hinged bases to bottom of each baseboard using piano hinges, this is to allow me to fit all the DCC equipment to them. Based on passed experience when something electrical goes wrong it'll be in the middle of a show with poor lighting!

This will allow the bases to be dropped down to allow access to all the electrics and allow me to work on them easier than upside down on my back where hot solder can drop on me.

I intend fitting LED lighting to each board which should throw light onto everything. I am varnishing both sides with three or four coats of varnish which will seal the wood protect it and allow for easy sticking of labels to them.

This next photo is of the layout I'm building at my local model club which shows the DCC equipment fitted.

Its a while since I added to my post now and so I thought it time to bring things up to date. I've been working more or less every day since my last post in January on both fiddle yards and the wiring.

Today has seen the whole layout up for the first time so here are a few more photos of where I'm up to.

post-4401-0-94523400-1488225092_thumb.jpg

The complete layout 20'x2' looking at the front with back of layout to wall

post-4401-0-28183800-1488225102_thumb.jpg

This shows the Fiddle yard traverser at the 'C' end of layout I have used 550mm two way drawer runners which allows for great movement both ways.

post-4401-0-07938800-1488225111_thumb.jpg

This shows the 'A' end of layout with mirror of opposite end Fiddle Yard, I hope to have five or six roads which will be around 4' long.

This end will also have the programme track on it worked via a two way switch.

post-4401-0-59010100-1488225124_thumb.jpg

Fiddle Yard in its near full open position, it will also go the same distance in the opposite direction

post-4401-0-12144800-1488225135_thumb.jpg

This shows the drawer runners as fixed to the underside of the fiddle yard, you can also see on the front of the layout a Digitrax UP5 connector which will allow operation of the layout from the front. This allows us to explain the workings of the layout to visitors at shows. Other good news is I have an invite to Doncaster for the 2018 BRM show!

Cheers

After a two week break from doing any work on the layout due to sorting all my '00' stock that I am selling to help finance this layout I have spent the last couple of days finishing the track laying on the traversers at each end of the layout.

post-4401-0-32026200-1490207620_thumb.jpg

The wooden blocks are to hopefully stop stock falling on the floor! I am also adding power switches and led's that will also isolate all the tracks that are not in use.

I have spent today doing some ballasting using a method I saw on RMweb some time ago, I am painting let down PVA glue between the sleepers and then sprinkling the ballast over it before pressing down using the good old finger & thumb system.

I have just picked up this thread again and I must say that you have made fantastic progress. I like your signal box which looks really nice. Sorry I have been away from Falcom Road but work on Ramchester has rather taken over lately but I am now back!

Keep up the good work.

Some more work I have been working on since my last thread, most of my time has been spent on building some LNER semaphore signals which I got from Wizard models. This is the first time I have done anything like this so it has taken up quite a lot of my time although after completing the first one the second was a little easier to complete. I have fitted the signals with working Led's.

I have also been working on the scenery above the tunnel entrance and below shows my first lair of 4mm static grass which will have added some 10mm & 12mm once dry. I will be using a spray glue for doing this.

I have now managed to complete all the ballasting and am just about to weather it down with airbrush and some Precision Paints track grime.

Ian,

Congratulations for the signal. I find building working semaphore signals one of the most satisfying activities in our great hobby. In addition to making a vital contribution to operational authenticity, they provide a welcome splash of colour and movement.

Chris

Its been a long time since I posted any photos of my layout, I've been busy trying to get it ready for showing and although I've done a couple of local shows for my club I still have work to do. Here are a few shots from our Pickering show last w/e.

Very nice.

Did you build the locos too?

And a Lotus garage with no Lotus Cortina? Or is it set too early for that?.

Hi Jeff,

No I didn't build any of the locos, far to complicated for me! I'll post a thread on here about the locos I've got with descriptions of what they are.

With reference my Lotus garage I've put cars that were about in 1961/2 as this is the era I'm modelling. The one car that is slightly out of era is the Elan 26R but as I own an Elan I just had to have one. I keep looking for other period cars I could add like the Lotus 16 and 19 but unfortunately as much as I'd like a Lotus Cortina Mk1 its a bit to new.

Cheers

Ian

Ps anyone going to Telford this weekend?

Looking forward to the thread about the locos. LNER pacifics I love.

I was going to Telford, but can't face the two-and-a-half-hour drive each way on my own.

I'm having to do a one hundred mile round trip every two days as it is, to visit my poor wife in hospital, after she was struck down by a VERY rare spinal condition, and is now in a wheelchair. Plus all the shopping, meals, cleaning and washing too. And the structural changes to the house will fall to me to carry out.

NOT how we planned our retirement together. I'm probably the last person to preach this, but to the rest of you: if you have plans, do it sooner rather than later.

Or life will surely get in the way.

Superb progress, Ian, I look forward to seeing it at a Show at some time.

More pics any time please. :sungum:

Andrew,

saw it at Pickering a fortnight  ago and being unbiased as I am a mate of Ian's, well worth planning a holiday in North Yorkshire for the wife's pleasure and going mid - week   to   mid -  week.

It's no good getting older if you don't get more cunning. Lovely layout with nice scenery and good operation whilst I was there.

Being grey and cunning my nickname at work was Silver Fox.

Regards,Derek.

Hi Derek,

You're a star!!!

Thanks for your kind comments, with Pickering been only our second show we are still learning so although we had a couple of gremlins we soon sorted them out. I think biggest problem we were having was letting the operator at the other end of the layout know what locos were waiting for him. The layout is 24 foot long so as we didn't want to shout at each other all day we had to meet in the middle to swap locos!!!

Anyhow, yesterday I went to Guildex at Telford and on the way I called in at a specialist walkie-talkie place and purchased a pair of radios with earpieces which are brilliant  so we now should be able to make ourselves heard. Over and out!

Cheers

Ian
