I’ve googled heaven or paradise seeking inspiration for a Sermon, although my favourite was a rather unexpected image of a delicious pizza that topped the search results

Deep pan, crisp and even no doubt.

Away from Billiards, and onto toy trains...

I blame this thread.  I've only ever dabbled in 0 gauge,I have no space for this sort of thing... but thanks to this thread, I have developed a fascination with old 0 gauge tinplate, and bought a few bits spares/repairs for a photography project I'm doing... then saw this beastie.  I loved this machine as soon as I saw it!

The main loco for my project is a "George the Fifth" bit seeing this Bing, German-made loco, I decided I could incorporate a goods train too.

The clockwork is in fully functional condition, and the paint only has a tiny amount of crazing (on the smokebox) and a couple of chips.

It's a shame it doesn't have motion/coupling rods, but otherwise it's a very characterful, chunky little tank loco, and destined to be retained as a shelf-sitter after the project.

Here’s one to be going on with.

Its a Milbro standard 4-4-2T, which I’ve had in the projects drawer for a couple of years now. Background reading here https://www.milbromodelrailways.co.uk/locomotives.html It has a deeply dead motor. A kind person gave me a working original replacement, but the pinion and fixing points are different, so it would be better if I can find someone with the capability to re-mag, and if needed re-wind, the one it has.

IMO, these Mills standard locos, both the 4-4-2T and the rarer 0-6-2T, are well proportioned and convincing, a step up from Hornby, which is what they were meant to be, and better looking than the BL standard tanks, which are a bit too fat to be truly believable.

That's a nice loco, and yes, noticably better proportioned than similar machines.

Are you doing a Terrence Cuneo pic there, by incorporating a mouse ;)

How's this for a bit of old-fashioned O gauge?  As mentioned in the thread about the Bing tank engine, I've been acquiring spares/repairs tinplate O for the photography project.  I really didn't need this for the project, but after stumbling on this on eBay, for a bit under £25 including postage, I couldn't resist.

A fascinating little bit of British toy train history.  From what I gather, this is the very end of the Hornby O gauge legacy; the ingeniously re-done Thomas Percy, an interesting (and early) bit of product tie-in.

It's a characterful little set, particularly the plastic goods wagons.  Happy to say it's all in working order too, no warping, no cracking, and the plastic has failed go bendy like a lot of plastic toys of that vintage.

I doubt it's going to accumulate extra value, but I'll be hanging onto it for the time being :)

Very good!

My youngest bro had the full-on Percy version as a Christmas present when it first came out (1965?) and the track seemed to linger about the place forever, often being used as a road for toy cars that happened to fit. It’s definitely robust.

The loco and wagons are compatible with tinplate 0 and got integrated (well disintegrated through hard use) with our hand-me-down Hornby for a while, before that faded away.

Memory well jogged, thank you.

Change is afoot.

But, that is not The End, because while the space currently occupied by that layout is to become a proper, permanent workplace for my good lady, who has been working from home since The Dreaded arrived, and looks set to continue WFH, a new layout is to arise.

More modest, but reasonably portable, and it will be possible to erect it indoors, and leave it set up other than when the current spare room--study is needed for a visitor. Some of you have contributed to the design discussion in another thread, but here is the plan as it sits at present, 3000mm x 2100mm.

0F6D502C-05F4-45E7-847A-723FEE7E04AB.jpeg.4a78092055d61df1520080e7533f9bd4.jpeg

Bound to change as it gets created, because my layouts always do, but there isn’t much room to do much different!

I’ve contracted-out the baseboards in order to give me a flying start, and they might arrive as early as next week, which is quite an exciting prospect for a person who is far better at starting projects than finishing them.

Thats an interesting phone number for the Birlstone Stationmaster (369). I may not have been keeping up here, but how big is Birlstone? If its a village it must have a UAX6 exchange, with the Station having more than one line (the subscribers with more than one line were put on the 3xx level, so that the exchange could hunt across the lines, normal single line subs would normally be on 2XX numbers.

In fact even for quite large villages/small towns when you could dial the unit fee area (the uax6 didn't allow this, every non-exchange call was via the operator) it would still be unusual for level 3 to be open on the replacement UAX13, as not many were on the phone!

If it was a larger town then it possible would have had a UAX14, but that would be 4 digit numbering 2XXX...

Sorry for the diversion...

Alice does travel in a train on the other side of the looking glass, although it is rather unusual in that it moves upwards, rather than along.

Telephone lines? Yes, Birlstone is a medium-sized town, big enough that the goods depot has a separate ‘phone line, but you have to imagine quite a bit of it, because there isn’t room.

I do wonder if we're going to see pictures of the usual "last day" festivities at Birlstone or Paltry Circus. Maybe a wreath bearing the hope "Perchance it is not dead, but sleepeth"...

A 4-car DMU for the closure special?  Or if the locals are upset, something more confrontational like Hawick with a wreath and a coffin on the platform?  Or a miniature mob on the tracks like at Silloth?

Well, Paltry Circus will definitely sleepeth, with periodic awakenings, because it is a standalone, packaway layout. The rest will be dismantled, and track will be up-cycled into the new layout, points especially, ‘cos they is not cheap. The new layout will have a lot more tight radius curves than the old, so there will be some selling and buying done.

We’ll have to wait and see whether a special train, stuffed-full of train spotters in gaberdine macs, and locals who bought their first car last year and haven’t used the train since, will run.

Out of interest which loco hauled the inaugural service on the line?

I don’t think there was an “inaugural service” as such for the initial circuit, but I’m pretty sure this was made within a week of circulation being established, so the Q probably holds the honour.

My records - with pictures and video by Ted R - show that we had a Clatterbang Train Fest at Chez Nearholmer on 23rd May 2014, when numerous trains circulated - including the Q class, your B-L N class, the ACE 3-SUB (or is it a NOL?) EMU and your first Terrier. Visiting trains were from the Met and GWR.

The turntable shown in your film of the Q wasn't delivered till the very beginning of June 2014 - I took its pre-delivery pictures here on 31st May.

The awful "Madras Marmalade" grease was removed from the Q class mechanism on 29th June 2014.

Hope that helps with the narrative.

Maybe I’m a year out in my mental calendar then, and circulation was complete for the New Year of 2014, rather than New Year 2015 ……. I know it was a New Year, because I worked late a few evenings between Christmas and New Year to make sure it was ready in a very basic form.
