Indomitable026
It's been a while, I know - work's been getting in the way after a recent promotion. Anyway, I fancied half an hour in the railway room this morning, so I thought I'd start handling some of the track components to get a feel for them. First up the 'ready to lay' sleepers. They come in 3 inch lengths with all the sleepers joined together with lower level link strips. So the first issue is that in this configuration they will not bend around the curves. I've cut the link strips alternatively, this is the same fashion as ready to lay flexi track. Allowing it to be formed into a curve, in this case 36 inch radius In the end I'll remove all these link strips, however for now they remain to give me the sleeper spacing.
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted February 18, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 18, 2018 Would you be better always cutting the link strips on the outside side of a bend? At the moment the cuts on the inside don't open giving you two parallel sleepers and a V spacing to the next two.

RMweb Gold Regularity Posted February 18, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 18, 2018 On the prototype, sleeper spacing on curves is determined with reference to the outside rail, with the spacing closed up on the inside rail. To get the right effect, cut the link strips on the inside - although as this is not a high speed main line, it might be purely academic...

RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted February 18, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 18, 2018 track-construction1.jpg Technical question. I've got some of those silver things in your pic, they've got I, II & III on them, what are they for, Don't panic, even though they are P4, I'm not ever going to use them, just curious. Mike. Indomitable026
I've threaded sleepers on to a full metre of rail. (I wrote yard first but then checked) Took a while

Indomitable026
Here's a comparison between the new P4 track and some EM flexi track I never got around to using on 'Diesels in the Duchy'. I like the looks of the P4 stuff and the deeper sleepers I've gone for.

RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted February 18, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 18, 2018 Last pic - the wheels don't look vertical. It's clever multi-gauge Stu. Top is EM and bottom P4. That way the same loco can be run on DitD and Inverness.

RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted February 23, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 23, 2018 Not if you're interested in detailing Class 50s - ok, so maybe the wrong thread if they don't go to Inverness. I can re-post on DitD if that helps.
