CazRail
More polystyrene has been added to the Llangefni end of board 4, which will represent a very short rock cutting, which Ill use as a scenic break leading into the Dingle. Ive also purchased a pot of Acrylic Gloss Medium to represent water. Will post photos when I progress.
CazRail
More done to the lanscape with the knife this afternoon, including blending in hill slopes, cutting sides and earthworks for the crossing. The small raised part on the down side... Ready to be shaped. Earth works for the user worked crossing coming on... More to do, but the rest of the shaping will be with a palm sander. Once done, I can glue down static grass sheet where required.
CazRail
Today got some more done due to a visit to my parents. First job was to skim over the polystyrene with a palm sander to smoothen it out, and to form the fields either side of the track. Then, using sheets of static grass, I grassed the upper field, and grassed the crossing to create the effect of vehicles going through long grass. I havent yet finished gluing down around the crossing, as the shape the grass sheet needs to be coundn't be achieved in a oner. The Network Rail Land Rover demonstrates the crossing... Then to get a feel for things, I posed 31296 with a brake van and a VDA on the board... Edited September 4, 2018 by CazRail
CazRail
Base layer of scatter down, signs for the crossing made... Colas sent 56087 on an engineering train to Amlwch...
CazRail
The base scenery all glued in, it was time to lay the eagarly awaited track! Again, just a single length of bullhead track, glued down. 56087 appeared again with it's spoil train... Wiring and testing next, then ballast! [EDIT: Why the first image of 56087 is upside-down i havent a clue] Edited September 17, 2018 by CazRail
CazRail
Some footage of testing after wiring was complete. Edited September 18, 2018 by CazRail
CazRail
The track has been ballasted and a start made on the user-worked crossing... I then had a short photo-shoot with my weathered EWS 37703..

CazRail
Some scenic progress today with the arrival of a parcel from Howard Scenery Supplies... Heli Wildgrass: HSS' own tufts and elements: So I began experimenting with the three products on board 2, then on to board 3. I infilled gaps between bushes with the Heki wildgrass, then planting the tufts and elements where I saw fit. I was inspired to try Heki wildgrass from the Bennet Railroad on YouTube, a stunning US layout. These are the results... Really enjoying using these scenic products, and really recommend Howard Scenic Supplies.

CazRail
That really is very convincing, especially the first picture of the pedestrian crossing. Thanks, Rich, using Heki's Wildgrass makes the job easier and faster, but it had a knack to it to get it to look good, Looking good Caz. Thanks again, Nick. How's progress with Maentwrog Road's extension? Had some more unexpected modelling time this afternoon, so out with the glue and wildgrass and I finished off board 3 and begun the lineside on board 4. In this photo it shows the blending I've managed between the 6mm static grass matting and the Heki wildgrass. Around the crossing will be somewhat clearer as vegetation is regularly cut to maintain sighting for the user, as well for the train driver to be able to observe any possible risks on the crossing. I finished the linesides on board 3, where the line enters the cutting which leads onto board 4. I've now run out of Wildgrass, so will need to wait until I have some funds to get more. Happy modelling!
Enfys_Rainbow
Lovely work, captures the feel of the branch really well. Shame about the bridge on Glanhwfa road isn't it!
CazRail
Lovely work, captures the feel of the branch really well. Shame about the bridge on Glanhwfa road isn't it! Thanks E_R! I've tried to capture the line as if it was in regular use, although still showing signs of overgrowth particularly lineside. Having said that, the more 'out in the wild' parts of the line seem to be less overgrown, with the line clear boundry to boundry along much of it's length and ballast and sleepers in good condition! It's a very big shame! I've always imagined trains running over this bridge, so sadly now there's a very slim chance that'll ever happen again. At the minute nothing had been said about what they'll do, whether it's extensive repairs to the current superstructure, a new bridge or simply leave a gap until they need a bridge there,The bridge was removed from it's parapets today for the first time since it was installed (barring a few knocks), leaving the parapets and wingwalls looking very bare! Yeah, a real shame. I'm familiar with the line, having walked sections of it several times and having a real interest in its history. I was hoping it may reopen as far as Llangefni one day, but this may be the excuse they were looking for to not invest further. I've seen the video of the bridge being removed on FB...sad times! CazRail
A package arrived today from Model Railway Scenery, a packet of post and wire fencing; and galvenised farm gates. So, between looking after my daughter, I decided to make a start installing the fence and gates on board 4, around the crossing. Pictures from both Up and Down sides. I then decided to track down the Network Rail Land Rover to see how the contractors were getting on with the fence. They'd gone home... Ill close this update with a question. Of course the fenceposts come with wire in the packet, but is it really worth using it or will just the fenceposts be sufficient for the effect? Cheers, Caz.
CazRail
Finished off adding what fence posts I had, amazing the difference just the posts make. 31296 Trên Nwyddau Amlwch/Amlwch Freighter on a light engine move to Amlwch Octel Sidings... Around 25 years later, a class 67 (TfW, ofcourse) on a route learning run... Hopefully you'll agree it's coming together nicely.
CazRail
Fencing wire added to one piece yesterday, the wire will need painting, as its way too shiny! And a new addition to my main fleet, which may one day find itself on the trek up the branch... Hornby's 60087 in Colas Rail Freight. Hoping to aquire the Colas 67 and LoadHaul tripple grey 60...
CazRail
Update 04/11/2013 Arrived back home from the rugby trip to Cardiff today, and decided to do some more to the layout. Before I set off to Cardiff, I'd made a start on the water for the lake, using a layer of toilet paper as a base to provide a rough texture of waves. So today when I arrived back, I wasted no time to paint it, using tester pots from Wilko's. The two colours I used are 'Neptune' and 'Turquoise'. These are the results... This will then be covered with clear acrylic gloss medium, which will give the water some 'wateryness' and maybe a little depth. Also arriving this week is some scenery materials to carry on board 4, then it'll be to think how to create the rock cutting...
CazRail
To take a break from modelling using wildgrass matts, i will attempt to model ivy on the bridge's wingwalls and embankment walls through the lake.
