RMweb Gold 46444 Posted September 6, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2017 According to my copy of 'The Great Western Railway. 150 Glorious Years' by Whitehouse & St. John Thomas, Newton Abbot had the following 48xx/14xx locos allocated to its roster in 1947. 1427,1439,1466 & 1470. I've a nice snap of 4870 at Totnes on an Ashburton service in 1945 without top feed fitted. I'd like to renumber a DJM GWR 1420 without top feed. Out of 1427. 1429 and 1466 which others would be suitable candidates for renumbering? Thanks once again. Mark
RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted September 6, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2017 I don't have anything useful to add other than you have just asked the same question I was about to ask, given I'm in the same situation What livery was 4870 in? Looking at the similarity of shade in the transition between the smoke box and boiler cladding, I'm inclined to say black.
DCB
So all important question, is it black or green? Looking at the similarity of shade in the transition between the smoke box and boiler cladding, I'm inclined to say black. It must have been repainted during the war to have the post 1942 GWR on the tanks so that would just about certainly have been black. I guess quite a few managed to survive the war without a boiler lift and repaint but they would have been in pre 1942 shirt button livery. I can't see them painting out the shirtbutton and painting G W R without slapping black paint on.

Andy M
Peto's register notes that all four of Newton's 14xx/48xx tanks carried top feed fitted boilers at some stage in their lives, but unfortunately no dates are specified. Other than the info posted on 1466 by Nick above, I guess it's the same old story of finding images dated 1947 to be certain. I will have a trawl through my image archive for you, but as you know pre 1956 is not my forte! The list does show boiler number and change dates if this helps: 1427 - 01 Nov 46 (8013). 1439 - 12 Nov 47 (8015). 1466 - 02 Apr 46 (8079). 1470 - 28 Nov 44 (8021). It carried this boiler till Feb 48, so the state in the image at Totnes should be still good for 1947. Andy.

RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted September 22, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 22, 2017 There is a photo of 1466 at Buckfastleigh with GWR on the tanks in GW Auto Trailers Vol 2 - John Lewis - Wild Swan, page 281. No top feed, bunkers steps and associated hand rail fitted. Also of note is the large style whistle shield and the position of the tool boxes. The latter are in the forward position with respect to the splashers. This compares to those which were fitted symmetrically with respect to splashers. Unfortunately the photo is not dated. Does this one appear to be in black as well by any chance?
