RMweb Gold big jim Posted October 6, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 6, 2017 Typical, my job tonight should have been starting and finishing in Derby meaning I could have called in for a look on my way home but it looks like it's now starting in tyseley so I won't have a van in Derby to get me to the show I always like a look at this little show, so unless they change my job (again) it looks like I'll miss out this year
RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted October 6, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 6, 2017 Sorry you'll miss out this year - especially as it could be the last chance to see Farkham unless you go to the NEC or make us an offer . . . . . . . . . . RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted October 6, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 6, 2017 53rd ANNUAL EXHIBITION – 2017 There have been model railway exhibitions held in Mickleover for many years, as the first was held in 1965 organised by members of St John’s Church. With 5 layouts, and an admission price of 1 shilling (that’s 5p in new money), that first show attracted over 1000 visitors and raised £45 for Church funds. Further exhibitions followed and the Club was formed in 1968, meeting every two weeks at the Church Hall. Many years later we moved to our current building at the Community Centre which has allowed most of our layouts to be set up permanently. All of the layouts on display today belong to the club, or are exhibited by our members. The club caters for all ages (but with children under strict parental supervision) and has members with a diverse range of interests and abilities. We meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at our clubrooms at the Community Centre. We are now also promoting Transport related Film Shows at the British Legion (Western Road) and ‘Trains Only Swapmeets’ at ‘Our Lady of Lourdes’ Parish Centre (Uttoxeter Road). Please ask any of our members for further details. IN THE CLUBROOMS DUFFIELD OO Gauge Club Layout Duffield is the main Club layout. What you see today is the result of a great deal of hard work by a small number of club members working only a few hours each week. Work on the scenery has progressed since last year, with many more trees added and a hand painted backscene, by local artist and modeller David Wright (www.dovedalemodels.co.uk). It is not fully completed yet, but all great masterpieces take time. Over the past 12 months some of the signals on the main running lines have been automated to correspond with train movements. There is still a vast amount to be done and it will be a few more years before it will be regarded as finished. A variety of stock will be used, with most prototypical of Duffield over the years. WARNER STREET O Gauge Club Layout This layout is a double track main line terminus with two main platforms and a bay as well as a small goods yard. After some of the trackwork and scenic area was remodelled, the layout has a lot more operational potential. The layout is fed from a traverser which has also been modified. Much of this work was undertaken by the ‘junior’ members of the Club and some will be operating the layout today. The period to be modelled is not fixed, as a club layout has to cater for a wide variety of tastes although generally the bulk of operation will be BR steam and green diesels. The layout now incorporates a hand painted backscene, by local artist and modeller David Wright (www.dovedalemodels.co.uk), HILLANDALE OO Gauge Club Layout This is our main operating layout, which was planned to have 'scenery only' so that a variety of stock can be used, including UK outline OO, as well as Continental and American HO. The track spacing on the lower level has also been planned to accommodate larger scale On30 narrow gauge and the upper level has a circuit of 4mm scale OO9/Hoe narrow gauge that can also be used for N gauge. This means that a great variety of stock can been seen running on a club night although at exhibitions we try and ensure that matching stock is used! Digital Control (DCC) is available for those locos that are fitted and this also enables sound to be used. MODELLING DISPLAY Tanks and Planes Barry Carrington Barry has returned with his popular display of a range of military models built from plastic kits in a variety of scales. After showing all tanks last year to commemorate 100 years after their first use in the Battle of the Somme, this year he has added a variety of aircraft to the display. See how many you recognise ! IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE BETLEY OO Gauge Derek Loyley Betley depicts a 1950s Midlands village on Market day. The canal links Betley to nearby towns and coal mines as well as providing an unloading place for barge goods. Since being exhibited for the first time last year, the layout has been extended with a mine area and industrial sidings. Stock is from the BR era after the merger of the former LMS, LNER etc. WOODWARD LANE OO Gauge William Plant This layout represents the terminus of a small preserved railway. It was originally built to serve a Peak district quarry before closure in the 1980s when the preservation group moved in. A mix of mainline and industrial locos will be used giving Brake Van rides to the visitors. First exhibited here last year this small layout was built by one of our junior members. NUMBER 5 PASSING PLACE OO Gauge Martyn Chapman A small part of the 7½ mile long Grimsby & Immingham Electric Railway built in 1912 which became the only tramway operated by BR. Modelled towards the end of its life, the layout uses two types of tramcar, Great Central ‘long’ cars built for the line by Brush and ex-Gateshead cars acquired in 1951. The line was lifted soon after closure in 1961. Three cars from the line have survived, one original Great Central and two ex-Gateshead. In the background is the Grimsby and District Light Railway serving industries along the Humber estuary and a route for light locomotives to access Immingham loco shed (40B). DERWENT VALLEY N Gauge Club Layout A preserved 'might have been; line which could have connected Rowsley to the Dore and Chinley line through the Derwent Valley past Chatsworth House. This has now passed to a Preservation Society where they are holding a gala event in celebration of 40 years since the last BR trains ran on the line, and 25 years since preservation began. An intensive service will run using both steam and diesel locos as well as an occasional visit from Thomas. FARKHAM OO Gauge Club LayoutFarkham is a fictitious suburb of the Stoke on Trent conurbation in the Midlands. The railway running through the area is a secondary line with freight being the main traffic and only occasional passenger services. The aim of the model has been to portray the period 1988-95 and the pre-privatisation era of BR in a typical midlands industrial town. Track is hand built using C&L and Peco components to ‘finescale’ 16.5mm standards. Rolling stock is detailed ready to run, repainted and weathered, with others kit or scratch built. Farkham is our main exhibition layout and has been featured in all of the main modelling magazines as well as visiting shows up and down the country promoting the Club – there have even been three trips to European exhibitions. THIS LAYOUT IS TO BE RETIRED AND IS FOR SALE. PLEASE ASK FOR DETAILS. NORTHWORTHY OO Gauge Richard Billinge Last exhibited here in 2004, Northworthy is set in the Peak District serving the local quarry, supplying limestone for railway ballast and industrial purposes although general goods facilities are also provided. Passenger services provide through trains to Sheffield and Nottingham with local trains connecting to London and Manchester. Most of the locomotives and rolling stock will be recognisable as ready to run offerings by various manufactures. The locomotives have had some of the bright parts painted over and many of the wagons have been weathered to represent their more usual day to day appearance. OBER HO Gauge John Huddlestone ‘Ober’ uses vintage Hamo model tramway system dating from the early 1950’s, with electrically operated points either controlled by the operator or by reed switches between the track plus a crossover as the centre point of the layout. The trams used on the layout include a very early 1950’s model tram with a seven pole motor; the others were produced for the German market in the 1960’s and include two and four axle motor trams. All of the models have metal bodies and the track was produced from sheet steel laid into a plastic base. The ‘Ober’ layout also displays examples of Ehiem and Brawa Trolleybuses manufactured between 1948 and 2002. The buildings are from Vollmer who have produced model buildings since 1948. DEUTSCHLAND BATTENBURG G Scale Terry Melbourne When the small town of Frankenberg Elder lost its railway station, there died with it the hopes of completing construction of a long awaited branch to Battenburg, famed for its cake and a branch of the British Royal Family that became Mountbatten. Fortunately due to the forward thinking of certain people it was decided that Battenburg should have a railway and the station is on display today. This layout shows a very large scale in a very small space! THOMAS OO Gauge Club Layout Our new Thomas layout is now complete, replacing the old favourite which was the oldest layout we had in the Club built back in the 1980s when the TV series was just starting. This was long before Hornby produced the well-known models that many youngsters now have at home. Please feel free to ask questions – and look out for the special effects. MALC’S MODELS Trade Stand Our local specialist model shop now operating from enlarged premises in Ilkeston, where they stock a full range of Model Railway items in all of the popular scales and gauges including American and Continental models. ONLINE MODELS Trade Stand Based locally in Heanor, Online Models manufacture the ECKON and BERKO ranges of colour light signals, yard lamps etc. Also stockists of the ‘Railway Films’ range of DVDs. RAILWAY BOOKSHOP Trade Stand Chris carries a large stock of new and second hand Railway Books, and a selection will be available from the stand today. Following his semi-retirement and closure of his shop, Chris is continuing to trade from home - please ask for his contact details. ECCLESBOURNE VALLEY RAILWAY ASSOCIATION Trade StandA sales and fund raising stand to support the development of our local preserved railway which runs between Wirksworth and Duffield featuring both restored steam and diesel locos, as well as coaching and goods stock. JOHN KELSEY Trade Stand Our local second hand specialist, John will have many ‘good as new’ items for sale, which will appeal to all our visitors covering most of the popular scales and gauges. CLUB SECOND HAND SALES Mickleover Model Railway Group A great variety of unwanted items being sold by club members to finance their next project. Who knows what you will find ! RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted October 6, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 6, 2018 Hi John Sorry about lack of update for this year - my fault - too much going on in work and family life and I simply forgot. Depending on time of day you may be able to park directly opposite the Community Centre outside the shops on Uttoxeter Road DE3 OGB or in The Square DE3 0DD. Another alternative is Tesco car park which I think has a 3 hour limit but please check carefully on the signs. This is Kipling Drive DE3 9NH. All of these are within an easy walking distance. Opening times and prices same as last year. We hope you enjoy your visit - I will be on elderly parents visiting duties . . . . . . ! Mike
