kiwinewt
I had a moment this evening that reminded me I am still very much a beginner , just after getting to the end of covering the ballast with a pva and water mix I realized I've forgotten to put the easi-shunt magnets in place in the yard.......never mind, I'm sure I will work out a way. You could make them look like re-patched areas!
DavidMcKenzie
You could make them look like re-patched areas!Yeah great idea, I think I will end up with three magnets in the yard. I was thinking I could cover one or maybe two with some extra hard standing, but I don't want hard standing everywhere and a re-patched area would definitely not look out of place. Great to see the layouts beeing followed in NZ. I was born in te atatu and spent a good chunk of my life in NZ. I still consider myself a kiwi at heart (especially when the crickets on) even though I could probably also equally be English or German. Thanks again for the tip, All the best Dave Edited July 7, 2018 by DavidMcKenzie
DavidMcKenzie
In itself nothing amazing in this picture, the scene still needs plenty of work. But it's the first bits of 'green' that has been added to the layout.
DavidMcKenzie
The signal gantry got cut up and will become two signal gantrys . The kit just wasn't wide enough to look sensible over a 4track maineline. It was too close to the outside tracks and there wasn't enough space to hang a signal. It still needs signal heads adding, but it's starting to take shape. How it started out before being modified.
cornish trains jez
That looks really good David. Where did you get the kit from? Best regards, Jeremy
DavidMcKenzie
Hi Jeremy It was from traintronics. http://www.traintronics.co.uk/products/brass-etch-gantry-kits/n-gauge-4-track-modern-gantry-kit/9-52 Advertised as a 4 track gantry, although it hasn’t worked as planned the kit lends itself to relatively easy modifications. Regards Dave Brilliant - I have the same kit, but my layout plan has changed several times since purchasing it and I wasn't sure I'd be able to use it - why didn't I spot the obvious and chop it into two! That's my platform 'starters' sorted out... Cheers, Mark
DavidMcKenzie
Hi Mark, Will you be adding the platform starter to bridgetown? I actually like the look of the cut up gantry far more than the original full span. I wasn't sure if I should cut the gantry on the angle or at 90degrees. Originally it was on the angle, but I wasn't happy so I cut it flush at 90degrees. There is no going back now, but I think it looks better anyway. If you compare this picture to the posts above hopefully you can see the difference. Regards Dave 5
DavidMcKenzie
There was a little bit more progress this evening. A bit more base green went down and the different stages of track weathering can be seen in the picture bellow. The closest track is half finished, the 2nd track is pretty close to finished and the furthest two lines still need a lot of work and will probably get a much heavier weathering being yard lines. Regards Dave Hi Dave, Yes, I will use the gantries for the two pairs of through platforms on Bridgtown; the bay will have a standard post. I agree that the 90º finish looks better, and was going to do that with mine. I’ll add the latest image to the others saved in my ‘inspiration’ folder when I’m next at the PC. DavidMcKenzie
A small update on progress. With the OVHL down it's lost a bit if the wcml feel, but hopefully that'll be back before long . The yard got jiggled around a bit and I am much happier with the new layout of the buildings: And the layout itself is getting greener by the day. Nothing's finished yet, but it's slowly starting to look a little more life like. Regards Dave
DavidMcKenzie
I've been enjoying modelling so much that I've not run any trains for a while, so I had a running session this afternoon.

DavidMcKenzie
Hi Porkie, It's been slow progress over the summer. Holidays and good weather have slowed thing's down. At the moment I've been doing a bit of greenery. Trying to break up the uniform look of the base layer of grass with a few self made shrubs and some earth scatter. Not yet finished, but it's slowly starting to add some realism. The layers of newspaper have had a layer or plaster bandge added and now look stiff enough to start working some scenery in. And the self made tree experiment from previous posts has slowly come to something. The tree's are starting to look ok, the hedges aren't thick enough yet. DavidMcKenzie
http://www.revolutiontrains.com/tiphook-pfakfa-container-flat/ Is there anyone out there knowledgeable enough to tell me which of the 6 liveries would have run on the wcml 1995-1999? I was looking at ordering a rake for Maid's Morton. Any help would be much appreciated Regards Dave
porkie
Glad I am not the only one who is trying to find the correct livery for this era. I am going through most of my collection of books. And found nowt to assist me

DavidMcKenzie
Great set of pictures there Ryan. A little early, but still a huge help. They will also be good later for weathering inspiration. Thanks for posting them. All the best Dave
Amnesiac
No problem Dave! I tried to justify a set or 3 for what I have planned but they're just that bit too new/uncommon at that point in time. The layout is looking great so far by the way, definitely has that late 90s WCML vibe to it. Will continue to follow with interest!
DavidMcKenzie
After a relaxing Sunday afternoon model making in the sun the first signal gantry is slowly taking shape. It's almost ready for an undercoat. I spent a lot of the summer debating between working and non working signals. In the end I just don't have the modelling budget at the moment for everything I would like and I have to make some compromises, so I've decided to go for non working signals for now. Maybe at a later date I will revisit them. I've also started on some more interesting loads for the container flats.

Maybe at a later date I will revisit them. Hi David, Just spent 30 minutes reading through the thread, and bookmarked to watch! This is superb, love the signal gantry. Are they kits or prebuilt? Can I ask, whose dummy signals did you use? I am just getting back into railway modelling after about 25 years away from it, but haven’t been happy with many of the signal representation, so thinking of having a go at making my own, but those dummy’s could be a good place to start! DavidMcKenzie
Hi Richie, The signal heads are from nBrass. The gantry is a traintronics kit cut in half. I've mixed the two kit's together. The kits from nBrasd would make a standard signal. I've taken a photo of the kit and the picture in the instructions should show what it would make. The 'other half' of the gantry hopefully gives you and idea of what the full span traintronics kit would have looked like without modification. I must admit I don't know if this gantry is a perfect match to anything prototypical out there. I am sure there are a few people on the forum with more knowledge than me for that kind of thing, but both kit's are realistic enough for me. All the best with your modelling. Richie Kynaston
Dave, Many thanks for that, I knew about nBrass from their OHL gantries, but didn’t realise they did signalling and lots of other detail parts. Definately, need to investigate those option further. May even create a thread when I get started! Cheers Richie
DavidMcKenzie
I can recommend starting a thread and it would be good to see your layout progress. This is also my first attempt at a layout (since a Graham Farish starter set as a kid) and I've found it very helpful to be able to ask for tips through here along the way. All the best with your project. Dave
