mswjr
Hi All, I want some small bell code instruments ,Not sure of the correct name for them, Does anyone know if we can buy them for model railway use,or is it a scratch build job, Thanks
Gordon A
I think you will find that it is a scratch build job. I believe Triang made some block instruments years ago which are now collectors instruments. Gordon A

RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 22, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 22, 2017 (edited) Search desk bells and mount them on a wooden box and a solenoid striker using a point motor?, Examples here http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/desk-bell Edited December 22, 2017 by PaulRhB
mswjr
Thanks,Such a simple idea as well,And i have a few spare point motors,I was thinking of a lot more complicated version, Thanks again
DCB
Search desk bells and mount them on a wooden box and a solenoid striker using a point motor?, Examples here http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/desk-bell The idea sounds good but I would use a motor rather than a solenoid. I have pictures of a 12 volt motor with a 13 amp plug earth pin clamped to the armature shaft operating a signal somewhere on this forum. The motor only turns 180 degrees but if operating a bell, if the bell was struck just before the top of the stroke then gravity would return the striker unlike a point solenoid which would usually need a pulse to return it. I was working on something similar but lets face it it could drive the neighbours totally nuts with call attention and the rest tinkling across a quiet afternoon. Mine was going to use Clock Bells of various tones from long dead clocks but push bike bells could be a god substitute.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2017 You can use a spring or a weight to return the solenoid like doorbells do
Gordon A
You could use a relay with a spring return. I believe a friend of mine uses ex GPO telephone relays for his bells. Gordon A
meil
Alternatively get some WT588 Sound Modules and record your bell sounds (many available on the internet). You just play the bell sounds as required.

No Sorry Meil,I have to have them working,More play value,I am extending in to my workshop,so my railway will be really long,so my original railway will be joining on to my new one,and someone (my mate) will be operating one and me the other,so i want bells to do it properly, Well thats the plan,
MickRalph
Barry Luck described how he built the block instruments for his modle of Plumpton Green (LBSCR c1912) on his website at http://www.lbscrmodels.co.uk/instruments1.html. (Sorry - for some reason I can no longer post links when composing a reply. Mick Edited December 23, 2017 by MickRalph
RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted December 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2017 We have some desk top bells on Abbotswood Gary.... Nice tonal differences in apparently similar instruments A non latching solenoid with a return spring perhaps? Phil
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2017 .... Nice tonal differences in apparently similar instruments Buy some of those mini clothes pegs sold in craft shops and pop one on one bell like they did in some real boxes to tell them apart Just remember to take them off when the old hand comes in
