Hitchin ceased to have an allocation of Class 08 shunters in February 1978 when 08549/50/57 were all reallocated to nearby Finsbury Park, but just wondered when it actually closed as a depot/SP?

According to Wicki’, it closed as a depot in April 1978, corresponding with the switch of allocation to Hornsey the previous month. There are pics of locos standing in the yard well into the 80s and track plant beyond that time but I guess it only had the status of sidings by that point and with the loss of the remaining loco hauled passenger services in 1977, I doubt there was much call for it.

Last night (at our local MRC) I had a chat with a couple of

ex-drivers, who both worked at Hitchin Depot, although at

different times.

They both agreed that it was probably still in use (in some

form) until the early eighties, maybe 1982. The brother of

one also was based there on (I think) Outside Plant Maint.

(he still has the oak beams used to support lift units when

the winding mechanism was being worked on)
