I once came across a signalman with a sence of humour

I failed on the east coast north of York about 1989/90 I got on the phone and said I'm a complete failure, which is the correct term...

He says hey dont be so hard on yourself at least you have a job!...

Ok, I admit it. In 1976 I put a very rude 4-letter word in the berth for Platform 4 at Charing Cross. Only back-row people could put all the alphas in a berth. The panel signalman hooted with laughter - we were having a wind-up at the time.
