APT-P Photographs

Recommended Posts

Hi Andi

That's Interesting question as I only took the photos as they were lit on the day as you saw them to, it may be just to make them lit for show display reasons for Crewe Heritage Centre purposes, well that's what I concluded personally but maybe Brian can confirm, how they world have been lit back in the day when it ran, I did wondered at the time whether a bulb had blown but never gave it a thought as to whether there was only ever One Tail Light lit when it ran or Two.

Jamie

Hi Jamie.

Yes there would of been two usually lit but did vary.I never even noticed the bulb had gone as it's usually lit up. lol

One of my pics which I believe shows a rare configuration of the bogie coach in a train

Hi Big Jim

Great Photo, the ONLY ONE of a kind MKIV Coach (on Test) in the rake, hard to find and come across, Mr_APT aka Kit will like this to as it as the MKIV Twin Bogie Coach that Mr_APT spoke about earlier in this Topic, it was on test to see how it would interact with the other APT-P Tilting Coaches, as I believe the MKIV was a None Tilting coach from memory, so great to see this photo as it never went out as often as the other variants of the APT-P, thanks Big Jim...!

(Twin Bogie Coach Entitled 'Lab 2' No.977527)

In your Photo, the MKIV coach is the first coach off the Two Centre Power Cars.

Hi Brian

Yes I thought it may be the case of a Bulb had blown, I also notice in Big Jims photo, that both Tail Lights are lit up Red.

977527 wasn't really a Mk IV coach, it was a test vehicle to see how the twin bogie arrangement worked at high speeds and cant deficiancies.

The real Mk IVs, aka Intercity 225s, were designed to tilt a bit, but AFAIK never ran with their 'tilt sandwiches' installed. Sadly I've never seen a drawing or a pic of the 'sandwiches' as I'm sure they'd have been very interesting. The Mk IVs would have used APT-P Mk V tilt packs mounted under the floor, just like the APT-P, but I don't think any of them were so fitted. There'd have been no point without the 'sandwiches' in place.

As an aside, the generation of this thread produced no fewer than FORTY TWO emails in my Inbox telling me the various posts were here!  :D

Hi Kit

Many Thanks for giving us the run down on 'Twin Bogie APT-P Coach' Kit.

I did notice that the real Mk4 coaches were part of the 225 sets, but when you mentioned it originally I guessed it was before the 225 Mk4 coach of today and therefore could well have been the next generation of coach to be built making it APT-P MKV's (APT-P MKIVs) next generation, but instead became the Mk4's / 225 Sets we see today.

Interesting that the Buffer Display Bar Area, had or original drinks and confectionary of the day on Display (all Empty of cause) but still made you feel in was back to 1985.

Will the Back Lighting on Buffet Bar be lit up with LED lighting on the Model when it is completed, along with the lighting on the Passenger side below the Windows

Hi All

I came across some more APT-P photos from a visit back in January 2010, I notice I don't have some of them from the visit we made this time round.

Hi All

Off the Drivers Cab was a Access Door that lead through to the Seating Area of the Coach as seen below.

From actually inside this very narrow connecting corridor area as Craigy aka Brian as already pointed out earlier in this tread, there was a Generator on the Left side as you walk in from the Seating Area through to the Drivers Cab side.

In the amended Photo Graphic above, I was unsure of what I was looking at on the Right hand side of this corridor or the opposite side from the generator, I know Brian did mentioned about the batteries that where on the lower shelf on the Right as can be seen by the White Sheet covered over them for protection purposes of the Open Day.

Hi Jamie.

Those tanks are air tanks and also there is a tank containing what i assume is Glycol ( out of shot near the door ), i found this out when i opened the panel outside and pressed the outlet valve and a load of red liquid came shooting out lol, did the same on the new power car, same type of panel, same fitting and same liquid, this had " Glycol" painted on the panel. The hazard tape is to cover a transformer there which hasn't got a case, just the copper windings and gubbins..

Also the hob in the cab went years ago, and if you look on the desk back in 2010 the horn " High/ Low" panel is missing...that got pinched aswell. The one in there now is from 006 cab, araldited down with a small rivet making sure that one don't go anywhere.

Hi Brian

That's great mate, sorry if some of my question my be similar to maybe what you have already explained but that's because some of your answers are still on the other TOPIC, so buy asking again keeps the answers in one place, so I do appreciate your valued information bud.

Shame someone as robbed the buttons, glad I took the photo as I did back in 2010... to upload, so photos is all the evidence we have to say it used be like this/that.... etc X Y Z.

I guess what ever gets robbed can never be replaced due to the source of who made them probably no longer exist. Why do people want to steel something that is now preserved, crazy man!

Hi All (Part 1 of 2)

This next batch of photos is basically the exhibition area and some very interesting photo that were take during the contraction of the APT-P or what some coach were laid out like while on its trails before I presume it when into service. I hope you enjoy looking at them to.

Hi all.

Just an update to where i am now with the power car restoration. All the main heavy sanding is now done, there will be bits more to do once the primer goes on, but only on bare metal not the whole body as this just isn't feasible to do both in time and cost, with a couple of coats of undercoat and gloss it will protect it anyways.

The ID tags are still attached to the bogies, which is good as those usually go missing. When i was jet washing one side, i did the bogies and surprisingly some parts came out quite well, these will be done again to bring out the detail of the gear box, friction brake adjuster etc, then the bogies will be painted. The end doors will be painted yellow like the other power making it stand out more.

Here is my contribution to work done on the APT at crewe, back in 2006 I used to volunteer at the heritage centre and I washed the APT from one end to the other over a course of the weekend, at the time the centre had lost its direction, only a handful of volunteers, no money coming in on the gate really run down, my wife also joined with a view of doing kids parties (we did quite a few), she organised a fun day which attracted hundreds of people and bought in £1000s for the attraction but the narrow mindedness and pig headedness of the then management there meant we handed the keys back and walked away from the site, my wife has never been back since, I call in now and again

Anyhoo, back to the APT

Before, the unitnwas just covered in moss on the mainline side which only took a brush and hose to remove

Now this next batch may make you a bit upset!

One of the coaches was full of seats, some in ok condition, some knackered so we decided to get rid of them, we actually put them up for sale for a donation so we got money to put back into the APT, those that weren’t saved went in the skip!

Seat cushions, as you can see they were pretty worse for wear and stunk!

That carpet absolutely reeked

Looking back it’s a shame we didn’t have room to store all those seats as they are irreplaceable but I’m sure some were loose anyway having been acquired from other scrap vehicles

Here it is in 2011 at Shildon

attachicon.gifDSC01059.jpg

Paul Leadley and I were at Shildon the day after it arrived from many years 'preservation' at Kineton. We were APPALLED at the state of it, and after they'd shunted it into the main building we climbed aboard via the end doors to see what it was like inside. Amazingly it wasn't all that bad, and the Mk IV tilt pack aboard it was the best looking of any APT-P tilt pack I'd ever seen!

Here's me lurking in the distance along the centre corridor.  :D

Wow

Some sad photos there, to see all those seats go to scrap or even sold that not good either, who in there right mind, knowing very well that it's the ONLY APT-P left in this world and all what is inside it, why would you rip the seats out and original carpets etc., out to scrap or to be sold, surely there must have been space to preserve them somewhere and I know there must be some companies out there that will repair such waste if they need to be etc...!

Nothing of this APT-P should EVER, NEVER be thrown, or even robbed by thieves. The APT-P need to be restored back to its original glory and yes that means money that no one wants to give up freely in this strapped cash world we now live in, but even so, every part of it should never be thrown away without some validity of a group of ones who feel the same way about preserving this iconic train.

Surely there are an handful ones on here who wants to see it kept for all time for our own generation and for future generations as the first tilting train that went on to become so main stream on every other train made after it, well slowly but surely.

Hi All

I have pulled this photo out from the photo I had taken when I attended back at Crewe Heritage Centre 24 Jan 2010, along with some other photo that I have already uploaded above from back in 2010 to hear that doesn't exist anymore as someone robbed it, it clear CCTV is needed for those that clearly have no remorse for taking it, to flog on some website or just the scrap value of it.

I’m struggling with the last post, what doesn’t exist and what was stolen?

Hi Big Jim

I referring to what you said about you saying... 'Looking back it’s a shame we didn’t have room to store all those seats as they are irreplaceable but I’m sure some were loose anyway having been acquired from other scrap vehicles' and I uploaded some photos of the cab layout out back in 2010 and Brian was saying about the Horn buttons got stolen as they were still in my 2010 photos and have had to take them from the other Cab to make the one Cab look complete.

Its just sad hear there was no where to store them, I find it hard to believe, how empty the huge shed is with the Cab of the Class 47 inside, that room couldn't be found even it temporarily, or store them back on the APT.

Jamie
